Yeah, it did replace the Manufacturer's tax but it also added the Services tax. I also think it was a boon to retailors as I don't remember them droping prices to reflect the ending of Manufacturer's tax but just added on the GST. Everybody at the time hated it, especially in Alberta, and some tried to stop it but the GST was pushed through and led to the destruction of the Conservative Party. That's how I remember it.
