I have made the sojourn to NYC for work twice. First in late June 2006, then in October 2006. Both times I stayed in Manhattan, on Broadway about 3 blocks east of MSG.

First trip I took in an Indians/Yankees game. Since I was there alone I asked a lot of questions about making the trek through Harlem into the Bronx. The general concensus was I'd safe as there would plenty of people on the subways after the game.

Ended up one of the local guys on site said he'd go to the game with me and said he would drive there. Whole other story about driving in NY...the Bronx is a pretty scary looking part of town... We ended up buying tickets from a scalper for $55US...first level, 13th row behind home. That was my first MLB game, it was very cool.

Apparantly they are tearing down Yankee stadium sometime in the future and building a new stadium next to it and the current stadium will become parking.

When we left, the traffic was not moving. So the guy I was with took me back to my hotel on the train and returned to get his car after. I was glad for that cause even though there were plenty of people there were also plenty of trains...getting on the wrong one would've been easy!

Second trip I took in a Rangers/Devils game at MSG. Again very cool to be in such a famous arena. Noticed they didn't have any promos, no t-shirt cannons or anything of that nature. No hotties cleaning the ice either. Did see a couple wearing Flames jersey's though which was bonus.

I also took in an Islanders/Pengiuns game at Nassau Coliseum. Don't follow the directions given by the Islanders website to get there though. Again I asked locals about travelling there from Manhattan and taking the bus from the train station to the arena. I got a resounding DON'T walk anywhere in that area, get off the train and straight into a cab. When the game is over go to the Marriott across the street and get a cab straight back to the train! So I did...

Completely different crowd on Long Island...seemed a lot angrier than the MSG crowd. But it was very cool to see all the banners. They had some promos here and hotties cleaning the ice. Funny how 3 of them would skate down to Fleury's net, 1 would scrape snow while 2 would twirl around and bend over in front of him...it was awesome.

Other than the sporting events I did the usual touristy things. The Rock (Rockafeller sp? centre), The empire State building (go in the evening it's open till midnight no line ups), Times Square, NBC Studios, Ground Zero (mot really touristy so to speak...). tried to visit the Statue of Liberty but was too late...apparantly you can't go up to the top anymore anyways.

But enough of my ramblings...it's a very cool place to visit...more to do and see than you'd imagine. There's a Jets/Giants game this weekend you should try and attend that.
