Product placement has increased huge over the years. The situation of advertisements is simply a 'we want more money' one. Networks are shameless in pushing the limits of their viewers.
Product placement is alright in my view, and also much more effective. On monday's episode of CSI miami I noticed all the characters were rocking iphones. It makes the products much more appealing than a 30 second ad. Has anyone noticed the volume of commercials is usually louder than the TV show you're watching? According to my marketing prof that's no coincidence. Pretty pathetic.
Good point ken on the HDTV option not being enough for getting people to watch TV shows on TV. Although I will say ad's in HD are a bit more appealing to watch.
