My sincerest condelences Reg, I haven't had to put any of our canine family members to rest yet, but I had to with a cat last year. It was the same sort of peaceful environment as you just experienced. I bawled, and was so much of a wreck, I couldn't get myself to work, and I typically am not a cat person, it was my kids and wife who had to have the damn furball. I can't imagine how I will be when the time comes for one of my German Shepherds.
I also have the utmost respect for the fact you let your friend pass with dignity. Far too often I have seen people put the decision off for so long because they admittedly didn't have the courage. Watching an animal suffer for the sake of a selfish master is infuriating.
Real friendships like this are truly treasures. There is no unconditional love like what dogs can bring, and it is obvious that went both ways for the two of you.
