Don't we get to claim Ryan Smyth and Neidermeyer? After all, Cranbrook is a lot closer to Calgary than it is Edmonton. And the king of the Edmonton mullet is actually from, gasp!, Banff...

You Edmonton guys love your hurdles meet. Let me just say from experience living here in Japan that when I say that I'm from Calgary, they instantly say - "ahh, that's where the Olympics were held" - if they're not so young that they weren't around. It is a big deal - not because of how many Laplanders tune into biathalon - but because the Olympics has a brand that bestows prestige UPON a city. You chuck posters are trying to BESTOW an event with the same kind of prestige and it just doesn't work outside of the city limits of the chuck. Sorry.

Oh, and in the locked thread Sundeep said that the fringe in Edmonton is the world's biggest - Edinbourough's actually is, but it's still a good festival.
That's very true regarding the olympics. I didn't read the threads where Sundeep claimed the winter olympic was a non-entity, but I would have responded earlier. The Winter Olympics is a huge deal in Europe. How do I know? Because I was in England, and France during the 88 olympics. The media exposure was incredible. That's how I heard about Calgary. Yup, that's right...and I wasn't even living in Calgary yet. I didn't come to Calgary until summer of 1990.
