Hi friends, so I have decided that this year instead of a big trip somewhere exotic or over seas, I want to hit both of these shows.

I have never even tried to book for these shows before, so I was wondering if anyone here has been to either and could share some wisdom on strategies that work best for making it a great experience.

I can't tent, I can in the bush by myself north of 60 no problem, but surrounded by mayhem I just can't handle that. So hotel or RV is the only option for me, for either show.

If anyone has no idea what I am talking about check these out..

I am also looking for other suggestions on shows, especially any in Canada, that showcase this kind of talent.

Been to Sasquatch twice. I don't know what kind of advice you are looking for, as it's a pretty simple affair.

It's probably too far from town to make driving in from a hotel every day worth it.

It gets really hot there. So drink water/get shade/etc.... Try not to get too drunk in the mornings. Being hung over at 3:00PM in the sun sucks. However, if you do want to drink, do it at your campsite or sneak in a mickey. The beer lines there are long and so are the bathroom lines. The food and beer there is overpriced in general, but it's a concert so nothing is new.

Watching a headlining band take the stage in the gorge right at sundown is probably one of the most epic things you will ever see.

You'll have to RV it for Sasquatch. There's maybe one motel in the entire area, and I'm not even sure about that.

As for making Sasquatch a good experience, bring your own booze (it's super easy to sneak in), expect to get tons and tons of sun, and relax at times rather than try to find the best show for every minute.

As for the campground, don't expect to shower in anything other than your RV, I just went without as the lines were enormous. The campground is a mess and massive so plan a lot of time to set up.

Coachella is great but if you go, make sure you have some way of finding the people you're with....there are really no markers around anywhere.

If you're into electronic music, you may want to check out EDC (Electric Daisy Carnival). I went last year in LA at Trojan stadium and it was so good.

I haven't been to Coachello yet, but for Sasquatch, you are going to want to RV it. There are not any hotels near by (well there is relatively speaking, but you are not going to want to drive to/from the venue each day/night.

With a RV you are going to want premium camping, I think it gives you hookups then.
You are going to have to keep checking the Sasquatch website for when tickets go on sale. Opening weekend is when you are going to want to purchase (actually the very first day). The tickets are the cheapest at this point, and if you don't purchase then premium camping will sell out.

I've been to Coachella the past 3 years. The way the show was run has gone downhill each year but it can still be an awesome time if done right. The allowed daily attendance was increased last year to 85k/day from 60k and it was super crowded as opposed to the previous years.

I camped on the grounds all 3 years and each year the setup changed and got worse as they added to the attendance so definitely do a hotel. If they keep daily attendance up around 85k, traffic into and out of the parking lots each day is horrendous. It can take 4-5hrs to get parked so make sure you book a hotel within walking distance to the grounds. There aren't many and you're probably looking at a 30-45min walk but it beats a 5hr wait by car. Book early and check out hotel reviews on the coachella forum. There are many people that have gone for 10 years straight and know which hotels are good/close by/affordable.

Post some more specific questions and I'll be happy to give you more info.

Always have wanted to go to Sasquatch, the Gorge looks like an amazing venue.

Pemberton 2011 or bust.

Always have wanted to go to Sasquatch, the Gorge looks like an amazing venue.

Any confirmation on the 2011 event? I thought this was a one year deal.

Apparently they lost a ton of cash, and some of the organization for that festival was an absolute gongshow. Whoever thought it would be a good idea to have busses travelling up and down and then making U-turns on a road that people were also on needs their head examined.

I waited 4 hours to drive from Whistler to Pemberton....Then on the way back we had to take a shuttle bus to get to our car, but they were using old school yellow school busses to ferry us. One of these busses fell into a ditch, which took several hours to clean up.

Edit: saw your response :(

Great responses, thanks a lot guys and gals.

I don't really have any specific questions yet I was just looking for general opinions and I got them. I am looking into hotels right now for Coachello, Sasquatch I sent an email for when I can start booking RV's I am guessing that will be as soon as tickets go on sale.

In your experiences do the RV's generally fill up really fast, or are they a bit pricey and that scares people off? So far it seems hotels are difficult to track down, decent ones, even at this point.

Premier camping is conveniently located to access the amphitheatre, has superior views across the Gorge and has easy egress. These campsites are extra roomy and easily accessible to accommodate larger vehicles i.e. SUVs, RVs or travel trailers. Sorry, NO HOOK UPS.

agreed on the hotels for coachella, we stayed in palm springs and getting in and out was a pain. that's kind of the trade off for these things though, anytime you cram that many people into a small area, traffic will be bad.

Line up looks pretty unreal.. I wonder who will all be touring with BSS.. for an event like Coachella does the whole team show up?

Amazing how many of those bands I don't recognize.. I guess I mainly listen to Canadian indie though.

I imagine by now it is probably to late to do anything anyway, all the good hotels/campsites are probably all booked up.

I went to Sasquatch like 5-6 years ago...
At that time, if you had a camping pass, you were put out in a giant field with absolutely no cover, or shade (think southern Saskatchewan, but in central Washington). The only public washrooms/showers were at the very front of the field near the entrance to the venue, which, depending on when you arrived, was a good 20 minute walk. There were outhouses and wash up sinks scattered around the field, but by the Sunday morning, these were severely vandalized, and literally had poo rising up, above the seat.
Once you entered the camp ground, you were not permitted to leave, as there was no re-entry, so you had to ensure you had every supply you were going to need. There was a store, in the same building as the public washrooms, but everything was ridiculously expensive (including ice for keeping food cold).
Obviously, if you're in a RV of some sort, the washroom thing won't be too much of an issue, and I've heard from friends that they've changed some of their policies regarding re-entry.
It wasn't all crappy though...the concert line up was top notch, and the Gorge is a really amazing "natural" amphitheater, with a great backdrop to the stage. The weather was pretty great too, although the location does seem to get a lot of pretty big thunder storms. On the Saturday, a massive hail storm hit, and lasted a good hour, leaving an inch of hail on the ground. This lead to hundreds of people sliding down the hill for fun, as it's pretty steep.
Just make sure, like others have said, to drink a lot of water, and bring rain gear.

I'd love to check out these festivals as well, but would hate the camping part. It always seems so dirty, crowded and uncomfortable. Doesn't appeal to me at all. I went to Pemberton for one day, and I'm glad I got to go home, shower, and sleep in my own bed at night.

Ya I can't handle the field camping, I know I can't.. it would be hotel or bust for me. Bush camping I am fine, remotely, but not the crowded field crap.. I Know for some that is part of the experience so I am not trying to mock it, just saying it is not for me.

If I was 20 again, sure :)

One option for Coachella is flying into Los Angeles and renting an RV with some friends and splitting the cost. There's a special parking lot for the RVs at Coachella that's a pretty decent distance from the gates. Kind of gives you the best of both worlds, you can relax and hang out with other Coachellers if you want, but with the luxury of AC and a fridge.

Tented it a few times at Lake Cahuilla which is about the only real campground in the area. Whoever gets there first gets the one or two trees in the shade. The rest get to wake up at 6AM in the 110F heat.

But if the driving in/out of Coachella has actually gotten worse than a few years ago, yikes.

Flogging Molly and the Bronx at Sasquatch will be sick. Every other band on the bill is terrible. :D

I wish i could go check out the Goezrock or reading festival. While I definitely don't like every band on those bills, (Goezrock has a lot of screamo crap that I don't like) there are a good number of bands.

I would love to see Dear Landlord and Old Man Markley! One day I'll get there.....

I may not be able to make it to any festival shows back in Canada this summer, but I think I've got my problem sorted as there is going to be a great looking festival in Lisbon just around when I'm going to be out there. Think I will spend my week and a bit following the conference I'm out there for just cycling around the countryside and hanging out at Optimus Alive (http://www.optimusalive.com/en).

If you're in California at this time, I would personally go see Prince who is playing 21 nights the Los Angeles Forum. IMHO, the best guitarist and live performer in the world. Prince headlined Coachella two or three years ago IIRC.

Tickets are only $25 as he explained: "$25 is what we used to pay for concerts. Then somebody called TicketMaster came in. Now we're showing who the real ticket master is and putting the right price on it."

The Arcade Fire set was absolutely legendary. I can't even begin to describe the feeling of just unbelievable joy smacking giant balloons around while screaming the WHOOOOO part to Wake Up with 50,000 + people.

Is anyone going to Ultra in Miami next month? I'm trying to see if any of my buddies are willing to go. The line up looks unreal.

I know I'm late,,,but I was at Ultra week last month. Most amazing time of my life, and nothing short of me winning the lottery is going to ever make me that happy again! I'll be going back next year for sure now that I know that routine. Any electronic music fan should definetely make it a priority before they die to hit up Miami in March!

The Ultra festival itself wasn't anything special. Yeah it was cool with 8 stages and 80,000+ people going nuts, but most poeple there I felt were there to get high and dress all cooky. But man the ASOT 500 tent made that party and it was by far the most epic thing I have ever witnessed in my life.

WHY IS COACHELLA SO IMPORTANT?

IF A MUSIC FESTIVAL HAPPENS AND YOU AREN'T THERE, DOES IT MAKE A SOUND?

This looks like a solid line-up!

Friday : Pulp, Girls, Yuck, Neon Indian, Wu Lyf and Givers

Saturday : Bon Iver, The Shins, Miike Snow, FEIST, St.Vincent, Kasabian, Big Pink, The Vaccines, Dragonette

Sunday : Florence + The Machine, La Roux, NERO, Wild Flag, Real Estate, Wild Beasts

These are all bands worth checking out that would put on interesting shows. Also two bands in the top three of the recently announced "BBC Sound of 2012" will be there : Frank Ocean and Azealia Banks.

Many great acts are being lost in the small print.

I love camping, but it is definitely not for everyone. It is pretty hard to do. You will get very little sleep and by the end of the weekend you will be pretty disgusting, but it's all part of the adventure.

There is a great sense of community that happens when you camp, and I still keep in touch with people I camped next to last year. The parties in the campground are also amazing, especially on the Thursday night before the festival begins.

It is pretty meh compared to years past. The lineup just isn't current enough.

Kaiser Chiefs, Arctic Monkeys, Feist, etc... haven't done anything good in 4-5 years.

Then on top of that you've got a bunch of other bands that haven't done anythign in even longer and longer.

I might go just for nostalgia value, but I think people are expecting too much of bands that haven't had hits in 5,10. or even 20 years. With the exception of Portishead, you usually just end up with a kareoke sounding greatest hits tour. Do people honestly expect a punk band now in their 50s to play with the same energy they did at the height of their success

Looks like they spent even more of the bill bringing in some of the biggest names in electro but there are some heavy hitters there for sure; Avicii, Nero, Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack. There are a lot of people that would go to a festival just for those names nowadays.

Would love to see any of those headliners acts and then you could just run back to see almost any of those djs. Seems like a choose-your-own-adventure festival and a great place to lose your mind.

For those people grumbling about the line-up....who were you expecting to see this year? Who is missing? Give us a list of 5-10 bands that you think were overlooked.

Interesting article I was reading today that reminded me of this :

http://www.gigwise.com/news/70035/The-Vaccines-Defend-Rock-N'-Roll-Music-Great-Guitar-Records-Are-Being-Made

All the bands mentioned in that article will be at Coachello this year and would be worth seeing. Many of these bands don't tour very often in the US and are from Europe/UK etc. Many times the more obscure bands steal the show at these festivals and that is the appeal as you go to be introduced to new bands that are just taking off....not to see old standbys that are crashing and burning out.....

Last year :
Empire of the Sun :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4a2EPjx5cDg

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTXLT9-frZM

This year :
Nero :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJVQJ4-n_cA&ob=av2e

Wu Lyf :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1wKZqNkcAt8

The Vaccines :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY4J3sVMmN0

Year in year out relatively unknown bands put on epic performances at Coachello......think any of these bands will be comming to Calgary anytime soon? Let me know when they do.....not to mention the festival atmosphere....Only problem is picking between bands to see when a couple that you want to see are playing at the same time.

LOL not I'm not expecting to save money. I've been to Vegas way too many times in my life already. We actually got a suite at the Cosmo so already I've spend most of what I would have saved on the flight. Just gonna get dinner, maybe hit Harrah's comedy club and possibly Tryst.

LOL not I'm not expecting to save money. I've been to Vegas way too many times in my life already. We actually got a suite at the Cosmo so already I've spend most of what I would have saved on the flight. Just gonna get dinner, maybe hit Harrah's comedy club and possibly Tryst.

It just seemed as though that 600 bucks that would have been going towards a flight could be spent better - I think it will.

ahhh...how many times have i told myself I'm just going to have some dinner and a few drinks in Vegas. Seriously though, solid plan.

Is anyone from here driving down? I was supposed to fly down with a friend but they backed out last minute and now I have an extra ticket and no flight so I'm a little uncertain what to do.

Anyone have any suggestions? I have never gone to a big festival like this by myself but don't want to miss this as it's an insane lineup

Look forward to the week one reviews. Will be there for week 2. Has anyone ever taken a shuttle from Palm Springs to Staples Center for a Kings game? My folks spend much of the winter down there, they told me that when CGY/EDM/VAN play in LA there's enough Canadian interest to charter a bus to the game and back. Might be a good way to see the Canucks get knocked out of the playoffs in game 6.

There's four of us heading down for weekend two, two of us are driving (including myself) and the other two are flying. It's gonna be pretty insane splitting up the drive between the two of us, but it should be a good time. Definitely gonna stop in Vegas, and gonna try and see the Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam on the way down as well. I'm so excited!

Any huge dilemmas for you guys? Assuming the schedule is the same for weekend 2 as it is for this weekend, Black Keys/Explosions In The Sky/M83 is a pretty big one on Friday night, and Miike Snow/SBTRKT/GY!BE on Saturday kinda sucks as well.

Flying down to Palm Springs today, going to go watch the Kings destroy the Canucks in LA as well before heading back for Coachella.

Question for those there the first weekend - how easy is it to get in and out of the event? I have a place that is right next door, with its fence bordering on the Polo grounds where Coachella is held, but I'm wondering if it is worth getting a bunch of food and eating there for lunch-dinner, or if I might as well eat from the undoubtedly overpriced vendors onsite.

East Coast Flame

It is a bit of a hassle to get into the venue. You're looking at about a 30/45 minutes waiting in a security line unless you get super lucky.

Honestly, the food in the venue is fantastic and pretty reasonably priced. You won't be spending more than $10 on a meal.

Ya, the food is priced pretty good. Beer on the other hand......

My suggestion is to sneak booze in - they search you but it's not super intense. You can sneak liquor in using a bag if you hide it in small pockets inside. Some friends of mine emptied out some sun tan lotion bottles and filled them with vodka and that worked like a charm.

Just easier then dropping $800 all at once on concert tickets.

Did you try and get tickets this year? Weekend 1 was sold out instantly. There were barely any tickets left from the pre-sale.

Considering what a "disaster" the pre-sale was yesterday, I don't envy people trying to get tickets in January.

Yesterday I was sitting in the waiting room for around an hour and a half. The only reason I managed to get tickets was because people who already had been in and purchased their tickets could get right through the waiting room and buy another ticket with a different credit card. My one friend (out of 10) who got through the waiting room ended up making 10 different orders on his computer. It sucked.

As much as we people bitch about Ticketmaster, Front Gate Tickets is even worse.

What exactly are you expecting them to be selling in January if this isn't a limited allotment? This is a PRE-SALE.

I'm not saying tickets won't go fast, I just think you're over hyping the 'disaster' that it will be.

Edit: This may just be a case of differing views on what a ticket buying disaster entails. Once you've attempted to buy on the Carnegie Hall site the word disaster takes on a new meaning.

You keep saying the same thing. If they could sell all of the tickets right now, then why wouldn't they? Glastonbury sells out every year in the PRE-SALE, before any lineup comes out. Coachella is going to be the same thing.

I'm sure there will be tickets available in January. They will likely be packaged with the shuttle passes or VIP tickets to get some extra revenue. There are definitely going to be a lot less tickets available than you seem to believe.

But whatever, I got my tickets. Best of luck in January.

Lame. He's always been one of those live acts I always wanted to see. If he can't pull of Sasquatch, I have little hope for him pulling off a lesser venue.

Not many on that list peak my interest.

What do people want from a festival? Big names? How do you define a "headliner"?

I'd be happy to see 50 bands I never heard of before.

I love Phoenix but them headlining basically says, "The headliner we wanted either backed out or wanted too much money so here you go."

For the price of Coachella, yes, big names. If I dropped that kind of cash for 50 random indie bands I've never heard of I'd be pissed.

At the cost of tickets (and associated cost of going to California/accomodations/etc.), there needs to be some interest with big names or bands you'd want to see/see again. I couldn't justify flying to California, paying a couple hundred bucks a day for a ####ty hotel room, and then a 3-day $100+ a day pass for the festival.

Edit: what valo said.

Definitely a weak line-up. Nothing really jumps out and says must see to me.

Wow...really?

Everytime I read through that lienup another band jumps out.....Lou freaking Reed?

Indeed, when you charge what Coachella charges for tickets, you have a certain expectation level for big name artists. 400 bucks a ticket for the weekend and a bunch of mid-level bands makes it difficult to justify the cost. If you just wanna go to a festival for the sake of going, there are cheaper and closer options.

Year in year out I am way more interested to read through the band listing for Coachello and SXSW vs Lollapalooza. Maybe it is the underdog nature of the bands they bring in who are just emerging. Headliners can often be the most predictable/rehearsed/boring shows out there. It is about shelf life. Seems to be a yearly question that often never gets answered but truly what headliners did Coachello miss out on this year? Who are the make it or break it bands.

Senator Clay Davis

The rumour is that because AEG is in the process of being sold, the line-up suffered as a result. But yeah when the rumours of the Rolling Stones or Daft Punk are out there and you get Blur and Phoenix, I can see why people are pretty disappointed.

I know it's a bit of a trek from Calgary relative to Coachella, but Governors Ball is stepping into the 3 day festival game this year in a pretty big way and tickets are only $240. I'm a little concerned about some of the logistics, but the lineup looks great.

http://governorsballmusicfestival.com/tickets.html

Kanye, Kings of Leon and a TBA headliner. Nas, Pretty Lights, Grizzly Bear, The xx, Feist, Cut Copy, Death from Above 1979, Gary Clark Jr. (who is so good live), Bloc Party, ALt-J, Crystal Castles and many more.

Personally I think there are great bands playing however it's the headliners that are pretty weak. Phoenix, ya they are one of my favourites however I don't think they are headline material. I'm half expecting Daft Punk or someone amazing to show up with them.

Either way, I can't wait to go!

Hey valo, I'm curious why you complain about Coachella's headliners when Governors Ball has the exact same headliners as Chella did in 2011, and most of the same lineup from the last two years. No one really stands out on Governors lineup, there aren't any rare acts or "big gets", whereas Coachella went out and got Lou Reed, Nick Cave, New Order, Violent Femmes, J5, etc. I personally think out of all of the festivals that have released lineups so far, Coachella has the best lineup by a mile.

.....from 2 years ago.

KoL and Kanye have both gone downhill in the past two years in a big way, KoL especially. KoL went from being my favorite band, to a band I could care less about. Their last few albums have blown. Their live shows are totally unenergetic now. Someone needs to send them to detox and have them start writing songs in their garage again. The whole drugs and stadium shows thing has not exactly done wonders for the quality of their music.

The same could be said for Nas, Animal Collective, Erykah Badu, Thievery Coporation, etc...

That Governers headline really looks like the dream line up from 2009 or so.

Agreed on KoL, saw them multiple times in venues large and small a few years back and they were great, they've been garbage since.

I saw Nas on NYE, one of the best shows I've ever seen.

For nearly half the price I'll take Governors 10/10 times.

I also find it kind of hilarious that those acts are getting called out but acts on the Coachella lineup that have been around forever and haven't done much recently aren't getting the same treatment. It's the typical 'it's Coachella so it's amazing' act we see every year, this year doesn't really warrant it.

Well I mean if you're going there, take away Phoenix (who doesn't even exist at this time) and the Coachella lineup would be a dream lineup in 1994. 2013? Meh, especially since the RHCP are without Frusciante.

I'm still in shock that Blur and The Stone Roses are headlining a night. The main stage is going to be a ghost town Friday night. I was at Pulp last year and it was totally dead, I expect the same this year.

YYY's and Modest Mouse should be headlning over the Brits, I guarantee they will draw a larger crowd. Then everyone will go to bed or go see Bassnectar and Dog Blood in the Sahara.

The thing about many of the older bands at Coachella is that they haven't played together much lately. So it represents a unique opportunity to see old bands/lineups reformed.

On top of that, they have a bunch of current bands, that are coming out with great albums now: Tame Impala, Vampire Weekend, Puscifer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs (will have new album out by then), Passion Pit, the XX, Metric, Divine Fits, etc...

One thing to remember about Coachella, is that the audience is slightly older than festivals like Sasquatch. There are lots of early 20s there, but also lots of people in their late 20s and 30s. The opportunity to see acts like the Stone Roses, Blur, Wu-Tang, etc.. is pretty huge.

Last year Pulp and the Dr. Dre mashup were both incredible.

Obviously everyone has their own preference for music, but I'd much rather see the Coachella acts. Some of the acts are older, but older in the sense they are some of the most talented acts of the past 10-20-30 years. As oppossed to an act like KoL, who just plain burnt out a few years ago.

I wanna go just for Paul Kalkbrenner. He rarely comes to North America.

It's a great year for djs since they seem to be moving away from your typical pop radio djs (Guetta, Swedish House Mafia, etc) to more deep/tech house acts. Booka Shade, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Luciano, Maya Jane Coles, Richie Hawtin and Seth Troxler should all be unreal.

I'm curious as to what EDC is going to do this year. I just looked at the lineup from last year and it looks like they booked every single major DJ there is in the world. What do they have left now? Are they just gonna book the same lineup and roll with that? I have an extremely hard time believing they can book that many fresh acts this year and not have a ton of repeat acts.

Really only way they can improve is having Swedish House mafia, Eric prydz, Daft punk, Skrillex or Deadmau5. Every other dj was pretty much there.

EDC is similar to Ultra.
You expect every major act in Electronic music to be there every year. It's getting to hear new stuff by all of them for the first time that's the exciting part.
