WEEK 17: BC Lions at STAMPEDERS

The last time these two teams played, the Lions embarrassed them. Stamps offense were brutal, special team coverage were awful and basically the Stamps just relied on their defense. Unfortunately the defense got tired. The Lions offense were actually not that good that night. Only reason they scored some points was because of Yonus Davis giving the Lions good field position. Hopefully we won't see any repeat of the game.

What happen when you make the running backs (Reynolds and Cornish) involve in the game? The other team start guessing whether the Stamps will run the ball, pass it or Burris running the ball. Joffrey silenced the crowds in Regina and he made the Minister of Defense Barrin Simpson look bad. Believe me if the coaching staff let Reynolds and Cornish gets involved early, the Stamps will clinch first place in the West tomorrow night.

Calgary really well in Saskatchewan last game and the game motivated them. I can see the Stamps going all over the Lions tomorrow. They just need to stay away from bad penalties. Defense lead by Brandon Browner had a heck of a game. BB actually shut down the Stamps' killer Andy Fantuz for no catch. Our special team finally played well on both running kicks/punts and the cover team did a heck of a job.

It looks like Mike Labinjo is gone for the season and probably won't be available for the playoffs. There is also a possibility that he played his last game as a Stamps vs Als on Thanksgiving. It is not because he is not a good player but it is because of his injury trouble and the play of Corey Mace, Miguel Robede. There is also a possibility that RB Jesse Lumsden might see some action but mostly in the special team.

Calgary will clinch the first place in the West meaning they will have a bye on the Semifinal game, and home field advantage in the Finals. I cannot wait to watch this game.

I read today that Lumsden is in on special teams for an injured Karl McCartney. He isn't going to get any touches from the back field, well as of now anyways.

The Stamps have added OL Stanley Bryant and he will start as Harrison is out. The Stamps also lost DE Khari Long after 1 game. That injury along with the return of Simpson means Robert McCune moves back to the DL.

I think the Stamps will play a much better game than the last time the two teams met. I believe the Stamps will clinch the West tomorrow night.

Alondra "AJ" Johnson (MLB). I love this guy and remembered when we stole him from BC Lions. AJ is a hard-working, hard-hitting and fast middle linebacker. It's just like getting by freight train.

Will "The Tank" Johnson (DLine). I have never seen a tall and fast linemen before Johnson came over. He was awesome and the other team have to double-team with no success. Him and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson came in to the training camp at the same time, but Will is the only survived. I was actually talking to Will Johnson at the Stampede last year and asked about the Rock. He said lucky for Dwayne Johnson that he quit football and went to Hollywood instead.

Bernie Morrison (MLB). Canadian talent. I love this hardworking guy. He was not as fast or as hard hitting linebacker as AJ but Morrison did his thing with hard work and determination. Awesome guy!

No doubt Chris Jones has to make some adjustments at half. That's the most points the Stamps have allowed in a half all season. The good news is that our offense was on fire.

The thing is everyone knows we play man to man and we are susceptible to the big play if we don't get enough pressure on the quarterback. Example is the Sask game we lost in Regina. He (Chris Jones) may need to reel in the blitzing a bit and mix in some zone and give our DB's some help VS mobile quarterbacks like DD and Lulay.

We gotta stop giving the opponent a good start. Stampeders started off really bad due to poor tackling, poor man-to-man coverage and some fumbleitis. Good on them to come back and after the first half, they ended up ahead by one 28-27. Nik Lewis is trying to shut Korey Banks up by making those great catches and 2 TDs. Burris is actually playing well. He is starting to throw the ball to every receivers. The only thing that I don't like is they seems to abandon the run attack again. Coaching to bring it back while the offense is doing well. Our defense is starting to get better and if it wasn't for that Arcenaux' TD(Anderson getting burned on that play), Stamps dominated that 2nd quarter. By the way, Chrleston Hughes was sitting on the bench when that happened. Hughes been giving Lulay a hard time in the 2nd quarter. Anyways, first half is over with and hopefully the offense continues to get hot and hopefully they bring the running attack back as well. I can sense that the defense after a bad start is getting pumped up and will have a good last half.

Wow, I can see the Eskimos fans cheering loudly for the Stampeders to win. They are tied with BC Lions for the playoff spot.

I knew abandoning Reynolds will bite the Stamps in the a$s. I just don't understand it. Burris played well tonight but when the defense know the QB will throw the ball all the time, they can key on the receivers. They shut down Lewis, Rambo and Bryant in the 2nd half.

Penalties and drop balls are actually the main culprits on this lost. Oh I forgot about the special team coverage going back to their bad side again. They can't tackle and Deon Murphy couldn't run. It would been a game as well if Juwan Simpson didn't fumble that ball after the INT. The one thing that ticked me off on this game is having to blow out the lead after some great individual performance by Lewis.

Well, I guess we will have to cheer for Saskatchewan's opponent tomorrow. Only good thing about this lost is giving BC an edge over Edmonton right now.

A lot of teams would have folded but the Stamps never gave up. I like the way they fought back and if it wasn't for the dropped ball in the end zone we would have won. Stamps showed a lot of heart tonight.

Started off giving a long ball pass 6 seconds into the game. Then let Lulay ran for TD. Defense gave up another big play before the quarter ends. BC ahead 17-0.


2nd quarter: OFFENSE = Great, DEFENSE = Good, SPECIAL TEAM = Average
Offense started playing well and defense tighten up. Nik Lewis made some great plays and great catch. Burris is throwing well. Came back from 20-0 and Stamps ahead 21-20 after the 1st half. Stamps gave up one TD and a field goal while they scored 3 TDs in this quarter. Defense scored a TD as well when Hughes stripped the ball of Lulay's hand and went to Keon Raymond for a TD. BC scored a TD while Hughes went to the bench for a breather.

3rd quarter: OFFENSE = Bad, DEFENSE = Average, SPECIAL TEAM = Average
Defense playing well at this point but the offense went south. 51 yards passing and running attack non-existent. Stamps scored one field goal and ahead by 31-27.

4th quarter: OFFENSE = Bad, DEFENSE = Good, SPECIAL TEAM = Bad
Special Team coverage collapsed giving BC some good field position. BC scored 3 field goals because of it. Stamps actually intercepted one of Travis Lulay pass only to give it back when Simpson fumbled the ball. BC ended up scoring a field goal instead of Stamps maybe getting 3 or 7 points instead. Stamps had some drop pass and the worst of all is the sure TD pass by Burris to Arjei Franklin at the endzone. Problem is, Franklin is probably trying to figure out how is he going to celebrate the winning TD instead of catching the ball. The ball fell off the turf. Stamps still have 2 more chances to get the 10 yards for a 1st down. Burris went for a TD pass instead and threw the ball to Lewis. That was the right call but BC defense came back and strip the ball off Lewis on the air. Another chance and Burris on a desperation pass to the end zone only to see BC defense intercepted the ball. Ballgame over and BC won 36-31.

Stamps lost because of some missed opportunities. There are probably 3-5 Burris passes that the receivers would have catch. Bryant was guilty of at least 2 of them, Franklin a couple as well. Another missed opportunity is when Hughes were chasing Lulay for a QB sack. Lulay threw the ball and Juwan Simpson intercepted. He ran the ball but a BC player stripped the ball off his hand. BC ended up getting 3 points.

STAMPS PLAYER OF THE GAME:

OFFENSE: R NIK LEWIS. Scored 2 Touchdown and made some people missed. Whenever Burris needed a first down, Nik Lewis to the rescue.

DEFENSE: DL CHARLESTON HUGHES. Pressured Lulay all night. Stripped off the ball from Lulay and Keon Raymond recovered and run for a TD. Hughes also had a QB sack. Honourable mention to Brandon Browner. Went man-to-man with Geroy Simon all night. Simon only had one catch for 11 yards but that was when Browner were on the other side of field covering Arcenaux instead.

SPECIAL TEAM: MARC CALIXTE. He was good for 3 quarters and he's always the first one to chase the returner. Can't blame him for the collapse on the 4th quarter though because it seems like Stamps coverage forgotten how to tackle again. There are some instances that if it wasn't Burke Dales, BC returner would have gone all the way.
