Finally :) It's here. This has always been my favorite major. Nothing like an evening match at center court in Flushing Meadows.

Who are your favorites?

I'd like Roger Federer and Kim Clijsters to win. However, I think this could be Andy Murray's time. He's played so well during hard court season. I think Kim's injury is worse than she is letting on and Caroline Wozniacki has a great deal of momentum going into the tournament with back-to-back hard court wins.

I think for the women, there are plenty of wildcards, including Maria Sharapova.

My American predictions: Andy Roddick gets eliminated in the second round and Mardy Fish gets into the quarters. James Blake doesn't make it past his opening match.

For Americans watch for Isner the 18th seed. He can serve a bazillion aces and get far plus he won't have to go 70-68 in the 5th again :)

Women's First Round

S. Peers (AUS) def. A. Wozniak (CAN) 6-0, 6-1

CRIPES! what an embarassment, why do we absolutely suck so much at tennis?

Maybe she should stick to sunglasses commercials!!!!!

Also, Hantuchova and Safina are playing in the first round? And Safina is losing badly? How far had she fallen?

At least we always have Daniel Nestor. It's a good thing he decided on a double career, rather than being a singles player. He's done a lot for tennis in this country and my hope is that when he retires, he can do even more. I had the chance to chat with him last year about Canadian tennis hopefuls and he echos the frustration. Canada's Milos Raonic is playing right now and he's leading. He looked decent at the Rogers Cup.

A good start for Clijsters today.

No upsets so far.

GirlySports

Nestor was a great singles player but just didn't have the stamina to play it continously on tour. His Davis Cup singles victories are legendary!

Wish Canada would get a great tennis player, just by fluke! Like Switzerland! Pre-Federer, there was nobody!

No upsets yet but Monfils has been taken to a 5th set.

The trophy wives have probably been the best part of this match. It's been very poor. Roddick looks tired already, Tipsarevic keeps making boneheaded dropshots. Seems more like a practice than a match except that they're keeping score.

I don't know if I was Roddick I'd lose it too

A) How can a linesman not know what foot foot-faulted! Don't say right or left, just say FRONT FOOT. That chick was STUPID.

B) Roddick really needed a boost and kept going back to yelling at the linesman. Gave him some momentum and he almost saved the 4th set.

Close!

He missed his second serve for a double-fault, then continued to harangue the official, at one point jokingly making a reference to “1-800-Rent-a-Ref.”

“In hindsight, did I let it go too far?” Roddick said at his news conference, repeating a reporter’s question. “Probably.”

The lineswoman was not on court at the start of the fourth set, when Roddick was called twice more for foot faults. He did not put up a fight at all on those, and at his news conference made clear that he wasn’t upset by the initial call - just the right-vs.-left issue.

God I really really am rooting against Nadal. Everything is seemingly going his way. All the big hitters in his half have fallen, and only Spainards stand in his way to the final. He's playing in such a dominant manner at the moment I don't see Federer standing much of a chance against him even on this surface.

While I admire his work ethic and willingness to completely change his game (improved serve, more aggressive), he really is the anti-Federer. Federer's game is not suited to beat Nadal at all, and because of that he is punished in the H2H over and over for it, and of course in slam finals and other big stages since nobody else wants to step up against Nadal.

It's crazy because if Nadal didn't exist, Federer would have 22 or 23 GS'es, 3 CYGS, and other massive accomplishments, yet if Federer didn't exist, Nadal would not do much better - people like Roddick, Hewitt and Safin probably would have benefited way more than Nadal would have.

That was a really entertaining match. Both guys played their hearts out. I will be cheering for Djokovic tomorrow! :)

Djokovic will be exhausted. I think he'll be lucky to even take a set from Nadal. The career grand slam is his.

But, wow, what a match this afternoon.

And soon...the women's final. Both are great ladies. It's hard to pick a favorite because they are just great all-around people. However, Clijsters has always been a favorite of mine, so ... :)

So sad. We are seeing the downturn to Federer's career. Best tennis player in history.

I'm rooting for Clijsters. She must be the sweetest female tennis player ever. Total class act.

Nooooooo...Djokovic just broke Federer and now he serves for the match.

This is after Federer missed 2 match points on Djokovic's serve :(

I know - I feel the same :whaa::whaa:

These "super Saturdays" are such a bad idea - there isn't enough recovery time between the semis and the finals. I imagine they've scheduled it this way just for TV ratings, but I expect it to have a big impact on tomorrow's final, which Nadal should (I hope) take in 4 or less.

What's up with Fed though? That was painful to watch today. If it was a matter of physical conditioning I could understand it, what with his age and two young kids and all - but that wasn't what stopped him today. I don't think I've ever seen him spraying errors and faltering on serve as much before. I hope he gets back on track next year - his rivalry with Nadal is about the only really interesting thing tennis has going at the moment.

I have no idea. It was definitely tough to watch because that's not the Roger everyone is used to. Understandably, he's getting older and such, but it almost appeared as though he was trying to leave something in the tank to play against Nadal. I especially thought so when he had match point on the break late in the fifth and then Djokovic stormed back to win it all. Federer looked lost.

And this goes back to the point that you raised earlier, it might be a good idea to spread out the matches a little more during that crunch time for the men (semi-final on Friday, rest on Saturday, final on Sunday). However, it being NYC, I guess they want a Saturday attraction. I'd say having some doubles finals and the women's final on Saturday suits the bill just fine and then the men on Sunday.

You must be kidding right? I've watched and enjoyed this entire tournament from the first day. From Djokovic surviving a first round scare against his good Serbian friend, to Wavrinka playing hours and hours of 5 setters to Wozniaki hitting 40 errors yesterday. Tennis isn't about just these two guys and the skill on display in this tournament has been the best I've ever seen.

The skill level of even the 50th ranked guy is absolutely remarkable. The stamina they have, how the cover the court, how they hit the ball from corner to corner. It's almost sueprhuman!

Federer is still great but he'll drop off now and we'll see the new guys come up.

Nadal-Djokovic is the next great rivalry. Part One tomorrow.

Part two is tomorrow. Did you see their epic three set match in Madrid last year? Nadal won 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (11-9). It lasted four hours and three minutes. Amazing stuff. Should be a pretty good match today, hope Djokovic wins. But I like Nadal as well. Have to cheer for Djoker though seeing as he's from my country. :)

YUP I did! Djokovic almost beating Nadal on clay in Spain was really something. However I meant majors, this is their first meeting in a Grand Slam Final :D

Federer-Nadal have met... 6 times? Two french, three wimbledon and an australian? Can't recall exactly off the top of my head.

It's going to be a great match today. My only concern is that Novak may be tired from this match... I think it's pretty stupid to put semis/finals day to day.

Yeah, it's amazing, those two the last 6 years have dominated the tennis world, and it's going to be a sad day when Fed retires. You're right, something like that. But for me, their best match ever happened on Wimbledon two or three years ago, I'm not quite sure, that epic 5 setter when Nadal won. I think it's also one of the best tennis matches ever in history.

It was and we'll always have that memory but more classic will come.
Our parents generations always thought the 1980 Borg-McEnroe Wimbledon final would never be surpassed and it was. There will be new epics!

Congrats to Nadal! Becomes the 7th man in history to have a career grand slam! Nadal is an amazing player. I think when it is all said and done, that the career grand slams record could be held by Nadal.

If he can have a long career playing the way he does. He has to work so much harder than a guy like Sampras who lived behind quick points on that big serve and solid net play. Nadal reminds me of Mats Wilander with more pace in how he was so mentally tough, got everything back, just out-willing his opponents.
