Word on the street is Terry Fox through the magic of CGI and Holographic technology. Don't know if there's any merit to that though.

You'd think Gretzky has to be involved in someway to. Has he even carried the torch?

No way do they leave him out all together.

I'd love to have it be Michael J Fox. Please not David Suzuki.

Holographic Terrry Fox.

That, or Gretzky shoots a flaming puck into the torch.

If its David Suzuki I'm boycotting there games.

He'd probably complain about the pollution from the flame...

Like Calgary 22 years ago, I bet there will be some passing around of the torch inside BC Place amongst celebrities/athletes, which I am guessing would include the likes of Gretzky, someone like Micheal J Fox...but the final bearer? Who knows.

They had the head of the Vanoc comittee in an article yesterday and he said only a few people know, and its just been set up the last 3 months...and that there's no way you guess how its going to be lit.

It's become pretty standard for the torch to get passed between multiple people while inside the stadium (I don't know if Calgary was the first to do that or not, I think LA did as well in 1984).

The final bearer is usually either a decorated local athlete or, as they did here, a "future Olympian" or someone who represents the ideals of the Games.

Maybe Joe Sakic? Local boy and former Olympic gold medalist in the host nation's favourite sport.

Won't be Wayne.

Wayne Gretzky will not be the final torchbearer at Friday night’s opening ceremony for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, organizers said Thursday.

Betty Fox is my choice.

A hologram would be really tacky and weird IMO.

Really? I think it would be cool. We don't have much for world known canadian sport icons.

If it's not gretzky then Terry Fox would be really really cool.

Perhaps someone could light up our pal dj pat here and chuck him up into the cauldron to get it fired up..

How the heck do you have time to comment on what seems like every post let alone thread.

I put my money on (literally, in an office pool) Michael J Fox or Suzuki. But now I'm thinking it'll probably has to be an athlete of some sort.

Hologram Terry Fox leading to Betty Fox lighting it would be absolutely epic

Terry Fox wasn't an olympian but his spirit is exactly what the olympics are about, would be an amazing start to the games. And he is one of the greatest Canadians who doesn't get enough recognition world wide.

If we're talking about a hockey player and Vancouver it's gotta be Trevor Linden. The whole world can ask 'who the f is Trevor Linden?' and then be informed that he was a slightly above average NHLer. :D

Someone refresh my memory... but since when did a hologram become a physical entity capable of carrying a flame?

better not be, there's enough indigenous stuff already. canada has more ethnicities than just the native folk. and i don't give a **** about the land they are owed. someone of importance to all canadians, that is what i hope for.

That sounds more like a punchline than a liklihood. (Ya, I'm a redneck, surprised me too)

My guess is Gretz.

That was the worst lighting of the torch I have ever seen. Without a doubt.

All we know is that it wasn't Catriona Le may Doan. I feel bad for the organizers really, they must be a bit embarrassed by the whole torch malfunction - it was like Spinal Tap's Stonehenge. Hopefully an outstanding games makes people forget about that and wayne gretzky in a pick up truck.

dj_patm
02-13-2010, 01:23 AM
I hope they never forget and that those people are ridiculed for the rest of their lives for thinking that putting Wayne in the back of a pick up truck was a good idea...

How on earth did they envision that going? How was someone getting driven in the back of a truck suppose too look good?

Embarrassment for the whole country.
