Well, just to clarify, I'm not American (even though I have lived here for 7 years now and have an American gf), but do like this country quiet a lot. I just don't think how something like a crying eagle will do anything. There are too many good things about this place to need this type of cheesy lameness. There are a lot of U.S.Americans that come across as ingnorant and arrogant when they visit other countries. Superiority complex sort of thing, I guess. I have met some of these people (and may have a rather low opinion of your education system) , but I have also met several intelligent and generous people who hail from the States also.
I guess the superiority attitude of some U.S.Americans is not completely unwarranted (gotta admit they are the current world power) but this will garner some ill will. Also being the world power makes your country (to some extent) the world police also, and this also will be resented. I could go on, but meh, this is already becoming a wall of text and off topic as well. To sum it up, some hate I do not. I actually like my southern neighbors. Especially fans of the Calgary Flames. :)

I always used to cheer for the US after the Canadians.

Over the years though, their junior program has really rubbed me the wrong way. Parise, Kesler, Johnson, Kane, Kessel. I think it started with the U-17 NDP. I think it really rubs an entitled attitude towards their players.

Now all those ######bags are now on their Olympic team. Don't think I can bring myself to cheer for them anymore.

As a larger-built goalie, I can say that thigh-rise's are crucial. Especially if you're on the taller/lankier side.

But his are more than 1/4 the size of his pad, that's insane!

I took a cultural awareness course. It wasn't to orientate me on the differences between Canadians and Americans, but the instructor's had American numbers showing for reference.

From a business perspective, Americans and Canadians are virtually identical. The instructor was quick to point out this fact irritated Canadians to no end.

In terms of Quick's mask, I do think it's neat how the American flag wraps around to form the USA Hockey logo.

Yes, it is a little corny. But it is sorta fun that way. Goalies are often quirky characters.

I think the American masks simply do not look well done. Aside from the cheese factor I think they look amateurish.

Gustavson's and Nabokov's masks are top notch.

I never understood why goalies never went to paint shops that specialize in helmets for motocross and street. Troy Lee Designs, BK Designs... there are so many painters out there that do amazing work, its surprising the americans would trot out such fugly masks on the Olympic stage.

Of course "fugly" is just an opinion, but look at Quick's mask and see how terribly out of proportion the USA logo is on top. The American helmets lack depth and brightness compared to the other masks.

And since they're the guys paying for them, as long as they're happy then thats all that matters.

Gustavson's mask is pretty much his Leafs mask with Sweden replacing Toronton. Nabakov's mask is just a boring flag design. Heck Fleury's looks like it came off the shelf at the Bay. I prefer masks with a bit more personality myself...so I see absolutely nothing wrong with what the Americans have done with there's.

As I understand it, the original design contained elements that would not be approved for use in the Olympics – you may have noticed in the first women’s game last night the Slovakian goaltender had stickers covering several portions of her mask.

True. All I'm saying is if it was myself, I would look elsewhere for my mask painting.

Gustavson's mask is pretty much his Leafs mask with Sweden replacing Toronton. Nabakov's mask is just a boring flag design. Heck Fleury's looks like it came off the shelf at the Bay. I prefer masks with a bit more personality myself...so I see absolutely nothing wrong with what the Americans have done with there's.

I think Gustavson's looks awesome. The colors, the brightness, it looks fantastic. As for Nabokov's I like how its simple, represents his country in a non-stereotypical way a la the Americans masks. I can't believe you think Fleury's looks stale, as far as Im concerned it's looks like it has had more time spent on it than any of the other masks. The detail and depth is far and away above the other ones.

Everyone has their tastes and opinions, so I can see why you would like the American designs. I just find them cliche.

Funny how this thread about Olympic goalie masks turned into a negative thread about weather being to patriotic is corny...I guess since the Flames arent playing some of the people here have to find something else to gripe about.

You're right, Quick's design is military pride. The dogtags and military figures are honoring friends of his who have served and, thankfully, returned safely from their tours. The mask looks better in real life than the artist rendition that was posted.

Isn't the point of personal names on sticks so they can be identified easily, not for promotion/advertising?

I'd hate to be the Canadian equipment manager at this tournament... (Edit: or any nation's equipment manager for that matter!)

Looks like Miller has to get rid of "Miller Time", which he seems to be OK with. He Says "Matt Man" is a tribute to his friend who died of cancer.

I understand the IOC's stance when it come to corp. logos etc. And I can even understand them wanting Quick to cover up "Support our troops", but is the phrase anyworse than the guns he has on his mask?

The stance is that they try to eliminate any propoganda, but when you think about it, the American national anthem just goes hand in hand with Quicks mask. IMO the guide lines for this type of stuff should be changed. Why shouldnt you be able to pay respect to friends/loved ones or ones country?
