Would anyone be up for a CP hockey dynasty league?

This would be a complete keeper NHL league, we would draft it once this year, complete with prospects, and not re-draft (other than the entry draft every June).

Just gauging interest right now, I would set it up complete with salary cap and everything. But I want to see if there would be 30 GMs willing to put the time into a league like this, and their team. I know CP does little yahoo fantasy leagues every year, but not a keeper league. So just reply and add your name to the list if you would be interested (copy and paste), next to the team you would want. If we decide to go ahead with it then you will be guaranteed the team you asked for now. I left the Flames available because I figured we could do a lottery for them since everyone will want them :D

How soon? We are almost half way there less than 24 hours into the first post.

Even if we had to pick late by a a week or whatever it wouldn't really effect much. I don't think what happens in the first week would change anyways choices.

Well I would need to set up a site for it and that takes time. I just need to know whether or not to go ahead with it, and that depends on if we fill it up. It is going well so far but I can't really start unless I know we will have 30.

I think what you might see as lack of interest is due, in part, to where this is located at the moment - unless I'd seen it at the top while perusing the OT forum, I'dve never known to come here to check it out. Give it a little longer and I'll be surprised if the slate doesn't get filled!

Just like the Annual Red Deer Hockey game... Spots left but more "Senior" CP's got a shot before I did. Subsequently, I didnt get to go because people had been here longer and had contributed more. I had to suck it up.

Yeah, I think it has to be first come first served alright. But I don't see anything wrong if a someone wants to be a reserve in case one of the 30 fails to deliver. I understand where IgiTang is coming from in saying that it's no fun inheriting a team someone else has picked, but I suspect that anybody who is not fulfilling their commitment will be apparent fairly early in the draft.

I don't want to take sides and get into a battle on this though, so I'll leave it at that.

As there is enough people, depending on user participation, seems like we're ready to go, how about drawing for Calgary? Get that out of the way at least. If the new people can stay committed I don't see why not to let them stay, if they slow down the draft then boot 'em out.

Since this will be a huge draft, what time-frame will we give for picks? 15-30 minutes or an hour? Give a day to gather info, then draft?

I agree completely. With your first point, it does look a bit like a clique. With the Heckle, thats the way it seemed. But I could understand why, the guys know each other and have had a blast playing stick and drinking. So I had to take the conformist approach and while not liking the result, I had to suck it up.

Regarding the weekly meetings, again I agree that this is the best way to ensure that GM's remain active. However for me, that would probably be a bit of a deal breaker for me. I cant commit to any specific times or a weekly schedule as my training over the next year will vary from week to week/ month to month.

As for perhaps getting a team down the road, I would be interested in that, however I would be concerned of having to take someones scraps over. It would be like inheriting the Edmonton Oilers.

I have a few questions about how the league and draft will be ran.

First, as Superflyer has mentioned, is there a farm team?

Since the teams are to be built within the salary cap, what happens when a player signs a new contract for a larger amount, and the real life cap hit puts a GM in this fantasy league over the cap? Do we have to trade/cut somebody to get back under the cap? I'm assuming that is the case, but I'd like clarification. I've never been in a keeper league that was subject to a salary cap before, so new contracts and changing salaries puts a whole new wrinkle on things.

As for conducting the draft, I agree we should start as soon as possible, but I would like to know all the rules first. Also, somebody suggested a time limit for making the picks. Keep in mind that some of us have businesses to run and jobs to do, so a little bit of allowance for your real life occupations needs to be kept in mind.

Stuff like scoring and how the cap will be handled really affect draft strategy, so the sooner all those logistical details are figured out, the sooner we can start doing our homework and developing a draft strategy.

The salary cap will be 60 million and will not be tied to the NHL one and won't fluctuate.

Yes NHL cap hits are assumed but as soon as a player signs a new deal in real life it will change his cap hit in the league - which will lend itself well to more trading and stuff, in order to stay under the cap.

League scoring will likely be very basic, ie goals, assists, wins, shutouts because it really skews which players are more valuable once you add stuff like plusminus, shots, blocked shots, hits, etc.

One point each for goals and assists, three points for a shutout, two points for a win.

It is just like a hockey pool, except you keep the players after the season is over, and you draft prospects in the off-season. No sim-games, it is just based on real NHL stats.

League types

There are three major types: redraft, "keeper" leagues, and dynasty leagues. In a redraft, each owner starts with no players at the beginning of each season and drafts an entire fantasy team. Each owner in a keeper league is allowed to retain a small number of players they owned during the previous season, eliminating these players from the draft, while each owner in a dynasty league is allowed to retain as many players as desired from the previous season, with the draft encompassing only rookies and other unowned (or un-retained) players.


Beyond that it works just like any other pool or draft based on actual point totals. The annual CP draft could be an example of a redraft "league" as it seems to be a usual set of people every year.

I got home around 12:30, went to surf the net and it was down. Figured I would watch some TV in the meantime and it was out too. Called Shaw and after 45 minutes on hold had a 30 second convo with a tech there.

I seriously need to go to bed now, I'm having trouble reading already and there's just no way I can get myself up to speed with with all the rules and what's happened so far, let alone coming up with some ideas for the future rounds. (It's close to 3 AM in Finland right now.)
