Didn't see it posted here, so...

Flames Ambassadors Celebrity Poker tournament is going to be held at Deerfoot Inn and Casino on February 25th.

Tournament is sold out ($650) but there are some seats available for season tickets holders (got an email about this this morning).

Anyone here considering going (I am negotiating with my wife) or anyone been before?

I've been. It's a lot of fun, but be prepared to spend more cash than just the $650 entry fee.

And if you like your drinks, it might be best to leave the car at home because it will otherwise likely sleep at the casino.

But again, it's a lot of fun. A very unique opportunity to interact with the players and other celebrities that show up.

I've gone every year and have a great time. Great charity fundraiser and easily the best event I've been to in terms of player interaction. I've asked for Glencross this year.

I'm jealous. I can't afford season tickets nor this entry fee even if it was available to the general public

I went last year, it was a great experience. If you want to mingle with the players it is a great opportunity. I kind of went with the wrong expectations. I went to play Poker. It is a tough tournament to win when your playing against millionaires and they have unlimited buy ins before intermission. Pretty much every hand had somebody going all in with numerous calls before the flop. The guys that would lose would just buy back in. I wasn't in a position to drop $200 every 15 minutes.

If I ever go again I'll just go for the fun of mingling with the players and have fun. I sat beside Mike Vernon and barely said a word to him because I was so caught up in playing poker.

I have to say the prospect of it being a rebuy til the first break is chilling me to the idea. I don't have the funds to keep up any of the millionairs who will be there.

I can just see it - dealt pocket aces and are forced all in by 4 or 5 others and lose to 8-9 offsuite.

I guess you have to go just for the fun and atmosphere. I have called to find out what the blind structures are going to be. If they are setup right, maybe I can sit there and fold hands for five hours and enjoy the company at the table.

If the structure remains the same this year, you can definitely enjoy the company at the table for the first 2 hours. Play aggressive-tight during that time and chat with the players. From there, the blinds go up rather quickly. Every 15 minutes or so if I recall correctly.

I was at a table with lots of re-buys. I did so once myself, not because I was short, but because I wanted more chips. But, you don't have to re-buy, so long as you are winning those other chips. You will need them when the blinds ramp up quickly.

I finished 11th last year, one person off the final table (my buddy finished second). Placement is secondary though. Its not a poker tournament so much as a charity event where you can mix it up with some local celebs in a fun setting. If you go into it with that mindset, you probably won't regret going.

What are the prizes for first place and such?

Last year, first place won a 1 year lease to some a truck (it was nice, can't recall the make), and a cash prize of about $3000 or so. Second received a buy-in to the Canadian poker championships and cash of around $2500. The rest of the table received lower cash amounts. Everyone donated all (or a substantial portion of all) of their cash prizes back to charity.

It was a Toyota Tundra I believe. You also win Flames tickets, a Flames jersey that says Poker Champ with the year of the tournament as the number.

They also had draws for autographed Flames jerseys and other memorabilia. The silent auction was really cool although pricey. Real nice art work of the players. Iggy went up and bid like $8,000 on one piece so I knew I was out of the running.

You do get a few gifts with your buy in. A Flames tee shirt, a framed Flames canvas painting (I got Lombardi), as well as a bunch of coupons. So you get a little something for your money other than meeting the players.

So I emailed Ken King this

Hello Mr.King. I know you’re a busy guy but I had a question about this tournament. I would really like to go and a good buddy of mine has season tickets. He might allow me to buy under his name. I think the original email said the tickets are for STH’s only and is non-transferable. He’s got two season tickets and I usually go to a handful of games with him. Do I qualify as being part of his STH group? I’d really love to play in this tournament

Thank you

And Rollie Cyr replied with this

Albert
We will enter your name as a season ticket holder and will confirm as to your participation.

We will let you know.

Does this sound like he will let me buy a ticket to this tournament from my STH buddy or does it sound like he will enter my name in a draw and if my name is drawn, they will contact me?

I'm confused

I would think you are in the draw (if there is one as a result of the season ticket holders oversubscribing).

More than that. I would guess 300+.

The lady I talked to at the Flames office said it was 350.

I cannot remember how much they said they made for charity last year, but for some reason $400K comes to mind - which means that there were a lot of rebuys.

they do it in the ball room, not the regular poker room.

Yeah, I will. I'll look strange though. Asain cowboys weren't really around in the good old western days

I'll probably just have a cowboy hat, a western/plaid shirt with my jeans and that's it. I don't own no cowboy boots

Did you win any jerseys?

albertGQ
02-26-2009, 08:55 AM
I did not win any jerseys. The celebrities at my table were Roger Millions and Dave Marcoux. Both very good and nice guys. Chatted with them and they both remembered my name throughout the night. I did knock out Roger so I won two tickets to the game on the 18th. Whoever the posters on here that got personal with his son should be ashamed of themselves. But that's all I'll say about that.

I brought my infant son's jersey and got all the Flames there to sign it. The only ones I don't have is Langkow and Giordano's. Both were not there for obvious reasons. Primeau just had surgery which surprised me because he's been out for awhile, but when I asked him why, he just said "ask the doctors" and didn't look too happy about that. Kipper was funny. Dion was hammered. Regher and Pardy kept their jerseys the longest. Only Brandon Prust made the final table. I think he finished 4th. Just ahead of me.

Kevin Smith (from Global) was a great guy too. He made the final two tables I think. He was rooting for me. I played with him a couple months ago and he remembered me. Well, it was hard for him to forget me considering I was dressed up in my Bert costume at the time (it was the Boston game, so basically the Halloween night game).

The girls were all hot. I talked to Mike Richards as well. Funny guy. I asked him if I was gay or not gay. He said I cleary wasn't gay since I made it to the final table. lol.

I won $1400 cash, $500 buy in for a Canadian Poker Tour event, a Top flight experience to the Sharks game on the 30th as well. Not sure what that means but I'm supposed to show up at 530 for a 730 start and there is food and drinks involved.

Once again I had a blast. So much fun. Everyone was in a good mood. Oh, and Ken King lost 60 lbs! He choked my while I was still chewing my food. Dude almost killed me. Lol

Oh man, the, "Top Flight experience" is beyond awesome.

My company had a launch event in January, and we took 30 clients to the game, on the top flight experience.

Private room, amazing meal, as much free booze as you can drink, kick ass lower bowl seats, and an unreal huge glass framed/signed picture of Rene Bourque on every seat at the table after the game. Ken King, and Rollie Cyr also stopped by for about 20 minutes and answered questions.

They also had a contest in which you choose the first goal scored by a Flame. The guy who won had picked Cammalleri, and got a MASSIVE signed framed pic of Cammalleri.

Then they had a draw with everybodies names, and I actually won. I won a huge framed picture of my all time favorite Flame, Re-Todd Bertuzzi. Hahaha...sigh.

Tickets to this experience run about $700.00 per person. Anyways be prepared for an amazing night, you will be treated like royalty.

I actually didn't do any re-buys. Scraping $650 for the initial buy in was enough for me. I did bring $400 just in case though. It was $200 for rebuys. People were rebuying like crazy though. I wish there were pictures up of this somewhere....the interviews I heard on the Fan were hilarious! Even Dion showed some personality before remembering he was talking to the enemy (ie the media)....

I think it was because he didn't know it was live till he already started. Either that or he was drunk already. But I enjoyed it, reminds me how young he is. But seriously, as a contemporary of his generation, I think he could get extremely annoying. But then again so can I. Also the Squid/"Luongo" interview was priceless.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, mods feel free to split or whatever, but anyone else playing in the Flames poker tourny this year?

I'm playing for the first time and I'm super pumped. Hopefully I can get something out of it but if not i'm sure the experience will be awesome!

p-p-p-p-p-p-poker face, p-p-p-poker face.

I would enter just to sit with Glencross for the chance to tell him I could read his "Scoreface".

Is there any charity aspect to this tourney or is it just having a good time and a chance to win sweet prizes?

It's basically all charity. There's a pretty sweet auction portion. Both live and silent.

So for the CPers that went to this, how did they do?

Any Flames made it to the final table?

Great time!! I went out about 30th with no rebuy and no add-on either so I was pretty happy in that aspect.

Sat at a table with Mcbackup (who was the last Flame in without losing his jersey) and then proceeded to knock out Johnson, getting his jersey.

Hi-light of the night was sitting with Lundmark to my left and Iginla to my right. The two of them get involved in hand heads up flop comes and Iginla checks it. Lundmark bets out 5K and Iginla moves all-in. By this time i've had a few beer and sorta convinced Lundmark to call. Iginla rolls over pocket aces and takes the pot leaving Lundmark severly crippled.

Few hands later Iginla takes me out. What an awesome time with lots of stories. I highly recommend anyone able to to take part in this event next year.

I thoroughly enjoyed the open bar...
I did knock out Moss, though.

ahh you were at the table next to me, we commented numerous times how we were glad to not be at your table with the Tequila shots.

For the record I too really enjoyed the open bar, perhaps a little to much.

No Tequila shots, just lots of Tequila Seven, hold the Seven...
Gotta loosen up the table somehow!

It's back!

February 23 this year, A Wednesday night seems kind of strange. Not sure if i'm going to play again this year but if anyone is thinking about it I would highly recommend it.

Sorry to bump old thread

Thanks - now if I can just convince my wife to let me ante up the $650 entry fee - I would love to attend this.

Happened last night, anybody play? I was thinking about it but the whole lockout thing and the fact that it was on a Monday night made me think otherwise.

I've been in it every year. Played with Jarome last night and had a great time. He was pretty darn excited about having Big Ern back in the lineup. The only problem with being at Jarome's table is that he's too good a poker player so you don't have much of a shot at his jersey! Great guy.

Raised $250,000 this year:

http://flames.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=658666

The overall winner of the tournament was Rob Zimmer, from title sponsor Stephens Fine Homes, who won a $10,000 Poker Championship ring from Jewels by Maxime’s, two tickets anywhere WestJet flies, two 2012-2013 Top Shelf Flames tickets and $5,000 cash. Second place went to Ernest Wyder and the third spot ranking was claimed by Cory Akins. The last Calgary Flame standing was Curtis Glencross (http://flames.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8471185).

There are always unlimited re-buys until the break, then one add-on at the break - that's where most of the money raised comes from.

They dropped it down to $550 this year, and sponsorship was half-price.
It was fun, as always, but I did not play very well this year - no cards either.

Yeah, the first time I played, I was shocked at the dough guys were throwing around on the re-buys. If you didn't walk in with $1000 cash in your pocket, you have to play extremely tight until the break!

when I played I think rebuys were about $200, was that still that case?

Being out of town really limits my attendance. The year I did play though I think I drank my entry worth of beer.

Yup. Re-buys and add-on are still $200.
Most people do 2-4 re-buys and one add on, from my drunken recollection.

Was a ton of fun as always.
Didn't see anything with Rhett, and his table was beside mine. Could have been before or after, in the casino itself.
