Theme
Celebrations/Special Occasions*

Rules:
All photos must be no larger than 800x600 (or something close)
Please post only 1 photo per post (make a new post for new pics)
Post as many photos as you like, just keep it on topic
Vote by clicking the "Thanks" button at the bottom of the post
You may vote for 3 finalists.
Once the challenge leader (winner from previous challenge) chooses when to end the voting, he/she will change the thread title to explain when voting ends.
Once voting for the finalists is over, the challenge leader will tally up the votes and post (in 3 separate posts) the finalists.
Challenge leader again changes thread title to say when voting ends
Then, everyone comes back and votes on those 3 finalists.
You are only allowed 1 vote in the finals, so choose wisely
Winner of the challenge will start a new challenge thread and copy/paste these rules in the original post for consistency.
Don't be too specific with the theme nor too general. Try and get a theme that people can contribute to. Don't pick the red african ant of Kenya as a theme... nobody will post. Likewise, don't make the theme "stuff on earth"
Have fun.

*Credit to Bobblehead for theme (Thanks I think it should be another good one).

Cue the red mile photos?

Part of me feels bad for continuing to post pictures with no real artistic merit but...

New Years 2007 in Taipei. This at the stroke of midnight when they fire off massive amounts of fireworks from the Taipei 101, which was the tallest building in the world at that time. The display went on for about 2 minutes.

I watched the 2006 World Cup final in Rome at Circus Maximus. They put these giant screens up on the hill and those big sound towers as well. If you've not been to Circus Maximus, it's basically now just a huge field (about the size of 2 or 3 football fields).

This pic was taken when France missed a penalty kick, which solidified the win for Italy.
For anyone that cares, the party afterward can only be related by calling it the Red Mile times 10. Or more. It was freakin ridiculous. The entire city went berserk. The entire downtown, every street, every piazza, every person in the city was in a frenzy. It lasted until the next morning and even beyond.

My father with his older sister, my Aunt Ella, on Father's Day of 2006. He was in the hospital at the time but was given a day pass so our family could celebrate with him.

He died this May at the age of 89. He was the baby in the family and still has 3 older sisters living. They are 91, 95 and 96.

May as well. Shame these threads aren't as popular anymore. I enjoyed seeing all the photos. Have people run out or is it because we're in the never-neverland forum now?

I agree and I think that has to do with some of it.

Yeah, I suspect that is the kiss of death for any thread that requires active attention. These threads were really starting to pick up in the other forum too.

I loved these threads but missed 2 before I realized they moved, and i only noticed because i accidentally clicked on the caption forum when trying to get to the tech forum... :bag:

IMO theres a bunch of themes yet
action/sports
macro

Ok maybe not a lot of themes left...

Maybe part of it, though it could be too many too fast too. I know I saw this thread and thought about pictures I'd like to put, then I remembered about it and now it's voting already.

Maybe we should make it a once weekly competition from now on. Thoughts?

Moving it has for sure dumped the participation. I rarely had gone to this sub forum before. With all the drafts and such on the go now it can get lost.

I also agree we need a bit more time for people to get shots in. A standard: New subject Monday, initial vote Friday-Sat, Final vote Sat-Sun, winner picks new topic would work. Or even extend it out a couple of weeks....

Yeah that's always the risk when creating a subforum.. but the drafts and such were all really starting to clutter up the OT forum.

Agreed. Perhaps a sticky for a week or two pointing people here for all the contests and such? It would be nice to get more people involved.

Can we get permission to have the round in the main forum for voting and such, this is not like the drafts were only a certain amount of people are involved. Any one could post so we should have it in the main forum and move it after the round is done. it is only a week long, it shouldn't hurt anybody's political discussions.

The fact that it has been on this thread has inhibited me from looking at it because I forget to check it. and it stops random people from looking and voting.

Also I would appreciate longer periods for posting and voting, I think longer then suggested already (I get sent out of town, or busy with work so I don't like rushing to try to post pictures and I like to go through everyone's photos. If we made it start monday and picture posting and voting ends the following wednesday (so a week and a half) and final voting is finished on the sat/sun and start again the monday with a new theme. This way it will be once ever two weeks, everyone has a chance to post and there won't be too many photo threads, I worry that if they occur too fast people will get sick of them and they'll disappear.

I think maybe we should have themes ready for the next few rounds, I think a lot of the first rounds produced good pictures when it was landscapes, water, etc. but when it got to thing that you love it made it harder to post/vote.

I would prefer themes like

Night photography (i've been waiting for this one)
action (even though I don't have anything good)
Macro
abstract (because pictures of inanimate objects at funny angles, always nice pictures)
Flowers (people have a lot of flower pics posted already, I think it would get good involvement)

Tiger
12-06-2008, 09:01 PM
also on the list of ideas I would put humorous photos as well, things like funny signs, situation, etc. I think people could have fun with that. And then we could have a contest of people photoshopping the funny photos

Have people run out or is it because we're in the never-neverland forum now?For me, it was just that the political crisis was such a big deal. I'll be checking in more now that nothing is happening on that front.
