View Full Version : Which is the best Photo?

I think I've decided on getting a canvass print of one of the following pictures for my parents for Christmas.

The three pictures below are pictures I've taken, but can't seem to decide which of the three to have printed.

What do you think is the best of the three? I gave them all obvious cheesy titles to make choosing easier.

Stream in the Forest

Clouds in the Sky
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/jonpatterson_mqs/xmas/P1010338-.jpg

Moon over the Cape
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/jonpatterson_mqs/xmas/P1010329.jpg

If the mods think it'd be cool to make a poll that'd make my life easier if I get a decent response from this.

Thanks for the input

All three are really awesome pictures...but my personal favourite would be Stream in the Forest.

Moon over the cape. Forest has been done too many times.

Moon over the cape. Forest has been done too many times.

First thought was forest, but I agree, Moon is more unique.

I think the last two would be great for framing if you Photoshopped them a little to make the darks look darker, and the colours more vibrant. If your intent is to leave the shot untouched, then forest has my vote.

For having it printed on a canvas, I'd go with the third one. The 2nd one, the clouds may not print as nicely as they look from my experience with canvas.

The MOON picture is beautiful and will look great on canvas:)

Why not have a pic that includes the family in some way? Or a specific view that is personal to your family?

I like the concept and the mood of the third one (moon), but the colours and vibrance of the first one (stream).

One question... I don't know much about the canvas-printing process, but wouldn't the fact that the third picture is portrait have some impact on things? Mind you, I guess you could just use a portrait canvas, instead of landscape...

The 3rd is the strongest composition for sure. Lighten the forground and blue up the sky a little bit and you could frame the actual photograph for them.

All three are great photos.

But it really does become a stream vs. moon debate.

I would pick stream as it has more life. I find the dark and grey areas of the moon shot a bit subdued/depressing.

The stream shot is the one I would go for.

The first one. They're all nice pictures, but the first one made me want to keep looking at it. That's how I decided how to buy pictures and art.

moon over the cape. its a shot close to home so i think it carries more sentimental weight. the stream and sky could be from almost anywhere.

Moon Over The Cape.

The sunlight in Steam In The Forest blights the photo a bit and the shot itself just doesn't really pop - MOTC, conversely, would look great hanging on a dark wall; it would really stand out IMO and there is something majestic about its simplicity that the even the equally non-cluttered treeline shot doesn't have. Also, Moon Over The Cape is just a really awesome title.

The second one has a roadsign at the bottom of it that distracted me... maybe crop it out if you're going to go with that one.

I laughed mighty hard over that, thank you!

Would you consider selling these to CPers?

Seriously? If anyone wants any of my pictures I'm more than happy to merely send you the original file and you can have it printed yourself. Just send me a PM, or message me on Facebook (all my pictures are up there)

Print that moon shot on aluminum and you've got a winner.

It's stream or moon for me too. I'd ask what your parents are more into. Is the forest or the sea more meaningful to them? Also if you have an idea of where they'd display the canvas that might influence as well.

As far as the pictures Stream is a little hot in the middle of the trees. You might be able to fix this somewhat in photoshop to try and "burn in" the hot area a bit. Also to my eye the whole pic seems to naturally "tilt" to the left. My head keeps tilting that was when I look at it. Might be worth a try at a slight rotation to see if that fixes it...or perhaps this is all just me.

The moon could use some warming of the sky to help bring out the moon a bit more, it kind of gets lost in the light sky and without a title I'm not sure if viewers would realize what the focus of the image is. Also a little nitpicky but the birds on the rocks are a little distracting as the white jumps out and takes my focus.

Full marks for posting these though, whichever one you pick they'll like.

Ok so after I posted this I figured I'd experiment a bit - love like goofing around in photoshop - so I did up these. Stream is tilted a few degrees to the right, I've burned in the trees a bit to try and get rid of the hot area in the middle (mixed results there, it's still hot) and I did a little slide effect on the water to try and make it look more fluid. Remember, I did this quickly so it's not perfect but you get the idea.

Also took the moon shot and tried to darken the sky a bit and clone out the birds which distracted me. the more I played with it the more I prefer stream as it has more life to it. Again, this was done quickly and not sure if it's different than what you've done...now looking at yours

Hmm... yeah, I was going to say you might want to consider how the hot spot will look printed. Looks okay (like sunlight) on your radiant monitor, might look goofy (white spot) matte. I prefer moon, but don't like the way you've shopped it. You've introduced a smog-like tint to the sky, particularly near the horizon.

FurnaceFace I love the water in the Stream in the Forest picture.

With the comments on the moon being too small, I tried making the moon bigger.

I'm going to talk to them at Japan Camera to see what their thoughts are. Definately between the stream and moon.
