I'm going to KL for 2.5 weeks for work. Anyone have any suggestions for stuff to do while I'm there?

KL itself is very Westernized (Massive Malls, name brands and what not).

Check out the night markets and head to Penang if you get a chance.

Have fun.

Lots. What do you want to do?

Here's what I wrote for a friend once.

There's quite a bit to do in KL, the main attractions I would say have to do with shopping. Night Markets are all over the place, but I would say the best ones are located in the downtown region close to the KLCC (this is the twin towers). I can't really say which one is the best, since they are all kinda structured the same way. Of course, there is the KLCC or the Twin petronas towers. The first 4 or 5 floors of the building is a shopping mall, so if you fancy a bit of shopping, you have that option. I am not too sure what the process is for you to go up to the top of the building, but I heard you can go to the top between the bridge to have a view. If you don't want to do that, there's always the giant ferres wheel called the Eye on Malaysia or the KL Eye. It's not too far away from the twin towers.

You can also visit the national museum of malaysia and check out all the local history and culture. There are also lots of really cool clubs for a good nightlife. Best one i know of is called "Zouk."

But the main reason why anyone would go to KL is the food. Eat lots. Be sure to try things like cha kui thiau, Assam Laksa, and Nasi Lemak.

If you want to get around, I would suggest the rail system. Taxi is ok, but the cost may add up. It's even better if you know someone who can drive you around.

Not sure how long you plan to stay in KL, but what I suggest so far should keep you busy for a few days. There's also the national science center, and The National Monument (Tugu Negara), though as a born and raised Malaysian, I found it boring, but you might not.

Hookers and blow.

Knowing their drug laws, that might actually be a bad idea ;)

Seriously check out the Petronas Towers. I've never been but my camera has, and my parents took stellar pictures not only of them, but inside as well.

There are lots of nice beaches in and around Malaysia, but other than that and visiting my relatives there I don't recall where they went and what they saw. Next time I'm talking to the 'rents I'll ask them for you.

If you have time, head down to the state of Sabah and Sarawak... in the Malaysian Borneo... quite a few sights to see down there and its also very relaxing. Check out Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Kuching in Sarawak.

Long bump, but I'm heading to Kota Kinabalu in Oct for 10 days for a work conference and some R+R...anything that you'd recommend doing there specifically?? Am planning/hoping to do some eco tours (orangutans, elephants, etc.)

Petronas are cool. Not really worth it to on the tour, just walk around them and take photos. There is a an awesome roti place nearby the Petronas, I think it's called Roti Canai. Seriously a hole in the wall place with some of the best food I've had.

If you want to splurge, stay at the Mandarin Oriental near the towers. You will feel like royalty.

Edit: the restaurant was called The Roti Hut.

I absolutely fell in love with Malaysia when I visited it for a week 3 years ago.
I have to admit we spent one night in KL working out how to get out of the city - ended up renting what seemed the oldest car in Malaysia (late 90s) and hit the eastern side (beach heaven), toured up into the heavy Islamic areas up north and across the hilly jungle by Thailand down to Penang Island (Georgetown).
Never paid more than 10$ per meal, got 4 star hotels for the price of a campsite here and was blown away by how advanced the country is.

I wouldn't go there if you really want to party and drink (Thailand is the choice lol), it is a very respectful country and from what I saw its aim of being a first world country by 2020 has been met...

cant wait to go back.

I wish I could give you advice, I ended up working 20 hour days the whole time I was there until the airplane got struck by lightning cracking a prop blade and I went back to Canada. That broke me for work travel.

Petronas twin towers, KL tower, national museum, bhatu caves, and there is a market over by the twin towers where you can buy all sorts of knock off stuff.

I was there in '09, I found it to be kind of a strange place, but fun in a way. Had lots of 'friendly' people trying to talk to me, usually asking me where I am from. Of course when I would say "Canada" they know someone from Toronto or Vancouver. One time, by the Petronas Towers it was two attractive ladies and they tried to convince me to get in a cab with them. Best just to ignore strangers in the the tourist areas.
Also some bars are mainly filled with Eastern European prostitutes and I had to do some exploring to find good bars to go to. The reggae travelers bar in chinatown was cool.

If you like history Melacca is pretty cool, Dutch colonial buildings and maritime museums. Admiral Zheng He stopped there on his voyage to Africa, so there's lots of stuff about him too.

Never been, but the 3-4 Malaysian girls I have met in my time were super pretty. Probably a good sign if you are single

Lived there for 4 years and frankly, not a lot to do in KL. It's a mall culture so if you like shopping then I guess its good.

Great food and restaurants though...go to Changkat Bukit Bintang and Jalan Olor.

When you're walking around at night (or during the day for that matter) make sure to try some durian or jack fruit.

If you want to see a fancy mall go check out Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. It's really neat to see and they have some really good restaurants.

Finally, if you have time go check out a movie. We went this summer and went to see Wolverine 3D. It was in an IMAX equivalent theatre, in 3D (of course) and the tickets were about $7 a person. Even popcorn and pop was about $3. It's a fun experience. The mall that we went to that was showing the movie was a West Edmonton style mall as it had an amusement park inside it. They also had stored that sold knock-off goods like Beats by Dre. headphones.

just to repeat.....FOOD!
so amazing everywhere we went, often like a cross between Chinese/indian and thai yet very very unique!

I found most of my food came cooked in banana leaves; rice or fish mainly.
Plus Malay breakfast (nasi lemak I think its called) is up there for me with pancakes w/bacon or a full fry up.

Try the KLCC aquarium, if you like animals. It's right there by the towers.

Genting highlands isn't close to KL, but worth going for a night or two. I don't recommend staying longer than that.

Yes, it's called Nasi Lemak. Cha Kuay Tiau, Assam/Curry Laksa, and bah kut teh are good options as well.

Well, if you have a car or can take the taxi then yeah, about an hour's drive (assume traffic cooperates). I assume when people ask about what to do in KL it would be somewhere close within city limits.

True although I hopped on one of the 10000000 buses they take people up there. Took 45ish minutes.

I agree that it's just a day trip or at most 2 days.
