Thanks Reggie for putting all that info in one place. It is greatly appreciated.

Strong start for the Flames prospects. Wahl with a goal in his first game, Nemisz was first star tonight, and T.J. Brodie getting a goal. Aulie is captain of the Wheaties as well.

Any body heard anything about Brent Krahn. Wikipedia has him signing with Dallas but he isn't on the camp lists there. Also Dallas has dropped their AHL team in Iowa this season, so I don't see them taking on new minor league contracts. Next year, 09, they'll be in Austin.

One guy to keep an eye out for is Aaron Marvin, whom from what I have gleaned is substantially beefed up and slated for top line duties at St. Cloud State. He had a pretty quiet freshman season, but that in itself isn't that unusual in college hockey.

Is it possible that we finally have nabbed a top player in a later round? When was the last time that happened for the Flames?

Gary Suter? Brett Hull? Sergei Makarov?

Who, Wahl?

Pull back those thoughts. I don't think he is any better then past 1st round picks in Lombardi and Boyd. I mean Wahl was picked in the 2nd round, not really a later round.

You guys? It was really only Ronald who took it too far. Beyond that, it's okay to get excited about a prospect putting up points. Nothing wrong with that, and no one is exaggerating as much as you just did.

I don't think anyone is wetting their pants over the early season performances of the prospects.

The point of the thread, if I remember correctly when Reggie started it a couple of years ago, was to have all the prospect info in one place and for people to highlight good performances (such as 2g, 2a for Wahl last night).

Reggie Dunlop
10-01-2008, 02:16 PM
Yeah Tilley...

If you wish to debate a player's particular merits, create a new thread. This is meant as a thread for quick updates without having to scroll through a bunch of arguments (although the odd bit of banter is okay).

i wasn't noting anyone specifically. i think there are several posts in the first page that specifically not how well a guy is going after 3-5 games... if it sounded like i was going after ronald specifically my apologies. another example would be the post right above his noting that nemisz is top 20 in scoring. well thats great and all, but i was implying that it doesn't matter since its so early.

apparently i misunderstood the meaning of the thread. i didn't realize that it would be updated every time a prospect picked his nose!

While it very earlier, you really cannot compare the two players. Wahl is known for his offense and was drafted for his offense.....Watt was not. Still great to see Wahl taking the next step after winning last year. Could be one of those guys (hopefully) that develops fast.

sounds like he got a match penalty for a slew foot that led to the suspension; this was in a game that sounds like it may have got out of hand. a 7-2 loss was the first of the season for Windsor, and the Spitfires had 11 of the first 12 minors in the game

Reg....what happened to the flaming ass/fart avatar? Some things should never be changed.

Wahl and Nemisz look pretty good so far (early days obviously). If Sutter's proposed trade with Burke to get the 17th pick back in exchange for the Nemisz pick and the Wahl pick had happened, I wonder who we would have picked?

Eberle, Tedenby or Gustafsson were the only forwards taken ahead of Nemisz.

Eberle is 4th in scoring in the dub.

Tedenby has scored bupka in SEL and has 4 pts in 6 games at Allsvenskan level (same level as Backlund).

For those interested in JD Watt, he had a great night last night, netting his first pro hat trick, and adding an assist for a 4 point night. He was flying and all over the ice. He was also a +4, and that includes being on the ice for a goal against in garbage time. I guess we shouldn't get used to him being in Vegas.

Its early but already seems like better numbers than Chucko was putting up in NCAA.Interesting comment, but I wonder if the quality of the school team skews comparisons like this a bit. Chucko went to a better hockey program, thus more competition for ice time, PP time, etc. I don't know, thoughts? But hey, points are points and you still have to be good to get them.

Not saying Marvin isn't a good prospect but at the same age Chucko was already playing in the AHL so I don't think it's a fair comparison.

Matt Keetley sits 9th in the AHL in GAA at 2.31 and 14th in the AHL in save pct at .917.

This is impressive considering that he leads the league in games played at 13 and his team can't win any games.

Being near the top of the league while holding a 4-9-0 record, to me, indicates that he is one of the lone bright spots on Quad Cities.

I compare him to Berglund who is a year older and has a similar career trajectory.....signed around the same ages, both with Vesteras, both highly touted, etc. Berglund ended 2007/08 on a point per game pace, but I can't recall how he fared early on. He got top line minutes apparently while Backlund didn't get as much prime icetime last year.

Backlund was starting to put up some points towards the end of last year and in the playoffs especially.

Since Backlund's "deer-in-the-headlights" stint with the flames, he has been quiet in terms of points and newsflow.

Kid is a terrific skater. Doesn't take many strides to get to where he wants to be. Likes to join the rush and because of his skating has no problem getting back defensively. Seems to like the wrist shot on net from the point. Got an assist this way and hits the net just about everytime. Quaterbacked the PP pretty well. Liked what I saw from him offensively. Defensively however I thought he struggled. New team though and a new partner which probably had a lot to do with that. Not overly physical and likes to pokecheck. As a result got burned a couple times by missing the pokecheck and allowing the player to skate by him. Hoping to see him again when the Broncos come to Edmonton later this season.

As you can tell by the other guy I listed, I like the big players. It really has a lot to do with his style of play as well. Love his big presence, love the way he can control a play in tight, and love his physical game down low. He isn't afraid to compete, nor battle. Has some good hands on him too.

Like I've said before, I don't think skating is an issue with him anymore then it is an issue with a guy like Langkow. I'm no expert, but I like what I see.

I watched virtually all of that game, and have to say I agree 100%. I have loved Negrin's skating ability from the first traning camp I saw. he is just so effortless. However, I thought he struggled in that game, but alot of the struggled were becuase he got hung out to dry. The Sonne goal comes to mind although it was a pretty femish attempt to block it.
He does rely soly on his wrist shot, but that is something I think the Flames and he are commited to workin on. They want to see more of an offensive upside. I think he moves the puck well, but the odd slapper would help him out.

Nemisz will be 19 1/2 at the start of next season, so he will be in the OHL

The only prospects likely to turn pro next season : Aulie, Backlund, and Negrin - Aulie and Negrin will both have played 4 years jr and will be 20+ yr olds - they'll be in QC

Grantham and Spratt both need to be signed. Grantham is in his overage year, and can't play another yr in the CHL; Spratt's in his last yr of college and will need to be signed following his school yr

All other prospects are 19 year old jrs or sophomores in college

Wow, Nemisz quickly becoming one of my favourite new prospects. 6'4 205 lbs. 8th in scoring in the OHL. Could be a great addition along with Backlund to the AHL next year. Dobbs, you should actually have something to watch!
In terms of players to watch, they have had plenty down there over the past season and a half. Nystrom, Boyd, Pelech, Pardy, McElhinney, Irving, Chucko.. but as you can tell most of those are in the defensive category.

Nemisz will be back in the OHL next season though for his 19 year old season, he was only drafted last summer.. and yeah... I think he's a gooder.

I dont see Spratt being signed, Grantham maybe? Spratt has never put up any decent numbers. Nemisz will be 19 and completed 3 years of junior, wouldn't he able to play in the AHL?

The FAN interviewed Ryan McGill yesterday and I caught the part about Irving. He said that after a slow start Leland has picked his game up and is the perhaps the brightest spot on the team thus far.

He also praised Chucko saying every year he does everything they ask of him.

Why would Grantham need to be signed? Must be some sort of new rule I'm unaware of. Grantham was drafted last draft and therefore we should have two years to sign him should we not?

A little write up from the Province on Backlund's new home in Kelowna. And some comments from Bouma (check out who Bouma's line mates are...says something)

Backlund thought about coming to the WHL last year....

Backlund, who was also a first-round pick, 24th overall, of the Flames in the NHL entry draft that year, began studying up on the WHL after that.

"I started reading about the league and how it works and I was getting more and more interested," said Backlund, a 6-foot, 200-pounder who has one assist in his first three Rocket games.

"Last year, I was thinking about coming, but I felt comfortable at home. This year, things didn't work out as I thought they would, so I felt it was the perfect opportunity."

Bouma on Backlund....

"He's a very skilled, fast player," said Bouma, who was skating on Vancouver's top line at practice Tuesday, lining up with Casey Pierro-Zabotel and Evander Kane. "He's very offensive, but he's also very good on the defensive side of the puck, too. You have to always been aware when he's out on the ice."

Bouma is a good enough player to be the defensive conscience on the Giants' top line.

I don't see it necessarily as the defensive conscience. I think this is more about Bouma having the make-up to get the puck out of the rough areas (corners, boards) and get it to the other two. Then go to the net, make it tough on the opposing goalie and defense and pick up any left overs. Oh ya....and if someone looks at his linemates the wrong way then he lays a beat down. Similar role to Lucic on Boston.

Q. How would you assess the play of Aaron Marvin, the Warroad native who leads SCSU in plus-minus and is nearly averaging a point per game?
A. He’s getting more and more comfortable all the time. He’s maturing physically (remember, he came right out of high school and is still 20 years old). He’s also maturing psychologically. (Never a loud-mouth, he’s nonetheless got to the point where he’ll verbally tease teammates in public and grapple with them after practice.)

Link (http://www.grandforksherald.com/articles/index.cfm?id=104321)

My gut feeling is that Marvin rides out the full collegiate four years, but you never know.

Kyle Greentree is #3 in goal scoring in the A. Nice pick up Sutter. I wouldnt mind seeing what he can do up in the NHL at some point this year.

I was just checking the stats page for the QC boys. Seems like Greentree, Chucko, Lundmark, Germyn, are all having great years even though the QC team is struggling a little bit. All 4 of those players have actually already past their Career highs with over 30 games left in the season.

Im not gonna bother posting these stats, but I thought I would share that with anyone who havent checked it out for themselves.

I think Greentree and Lundmark were excellent pickups for possible callups for the team. We all consider these guys to be AHL lifers, but there are many instances of players not coming into their prime till later in their years. Should be interesting to watch for the next few years.

Anyone know how long these two are signed for?
