Blizzard confirms new MMOG (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183916.html?om_act=convert&om_clk=newstop&tag=newstop;title;1)

After a new batch of job requisitions (http://www.blizzard.com/jobopp/) were posted to Blizzard's Web site, WOW fans flocked to the game's message boards (http://tinyurl.com/2hw7ed) to salivate over the prospects of World of Guitar Hero--stemming from the developer's recent merger with megapublisher Activision (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6183557.html). After a fan speculated that the openings were simply for Wrath of the Lich King--announced during this year's BlizzCon (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6176147.html) as the second expansion to WOW--a Blizzard community representative for the first time officially confirmed that Blizzard was working on a new MMOG.

"No, it is an unannounced next-gen MMO," said the rep. "And that doesn't mean an expansion for World of Warcraft either."

Considering that, before World of Warcraft, the most successful MMO had been Lineage at approximately 3.25 million users and the most successful North American MMO had been Everquest at ~0.5 million users... currently having 9.3 million users in World of Warcraft is a simply amazing feat and it is a no-brainer that they would continue to pursue the genre.

Personally, I hoping for World of Diablo but that's just me.

No honorable mentions for Final Fantasy?

Well, they did just merge with Activision. Perhaps it will be World of Guitar Hero. Epic raids of 40 people all mashing plastic guitars while feeding their delusions of being a real musician.

Coolness! :D

What's an MMO?

WIKIPEDIA (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MMO):Massively multiplayer online game (also called MMOG or simply MMO) is a video game (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_game) which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the Internet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet), and feature at least one persistent world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistent_world).

I know that... but this thread isn't about every MMO ever made... it is about the new one from Blizzard.

Also, Final Fantasy XI only ever made it to 0.5 million and it is based in Asia where MMOs are more popular.

I'd love to see World of Starcraft done in the style of an action-MMO like Planetside.

So would I but I don't think they are going that direction seeing as Starcraft 2 has been announced.

Was WoW announced before or after Warcraft III was released?

I am certain Bliz can come up with something a lot better than a rehash of Planetside.

Either way, I'll be lining up for this game tomorrow. ;)

Oh, of course Blizzard could make a better game than Planetside...I just meant it would be a similar style of game, in the sense that WoW has a similar style to Everquest (but is done much, much better).

Going off memory...

Technically it was announced WAY before Warcraft III. I think WoW was originally going to be some sort of RPG game involving the adventures of Thrall (orc chieftain). Basically take the introduction of Warcraft III and extend it into an RPG.

That idea was scrapped in favour of releasing both an RTS and an online game set in the Warcraft universe.

I am such a nerd.

Nope, you are a bit mixed up. Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans was outright cancelled on May 22, 1998.

Warcraft III was supposed to take a few ideas from the game (some RPG elements) but that ended up being watered down and it was mostly an RTS.

World of Warcraft's development was completely separate from those two games.

World of Warcraft was announced on September 2, 2001. Released on November 23, 2004.

Warcraft III was released on July 1, 2003.

Right...so if past history is any indication, they could be working on a Starcraft MMO that will be released a year or two after Starcraft II, continuing the story from where the RTS game left off (like WoW continued the WCIII story).

Oh wow... it's been that long since they were talking about Warcraft Adventures?

Thanks for correcting me though!

Amen to that.. I could care less about the WOWesque games. They require no skill as far as I'm concerned. Plus WOW has essentially enslaved my brother to the point where he is now entering his 3rd month of unemployment. SC2 will only be good if they don't introduce the hero nonsense that ruined WC3.. I hated that game solely for that reason. So much potential but it was such a bust. If they can balance everything perfectly like SC the game will be a classic..

Point taken, you are entirely correct.

I would, however, like to see them return to Diablo at some point.

They're "calling" for Fall 2008, last I had heard, but knowing Blizzard, it will likely be late 2009 before we see it on the shelves. Not that I've got a problem with that, at all, because it shows just how much integrity they put into making their games masterpieces. Unfortunately for SC:Ghost, it was pre-destined for failure given the rapid evolution of console gaming over the last couple of years. It's release was right on the eve of the launch of the 360 and PS3. For a console game originally planned to be release on the Xbox, PS2 and Gamecube - that's a hefty lose.

One could only hope it would be some kind of StarCraft MMORPG they're in the works with, but I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

I think they should build one called city worker. You can get such exciting jobs as garbage man, shovel supporter, level three assistant to the assistant of the associate Accounts Receivable Clerk. Sleep in, get promoted, smoke dope on the job and lean on another player to supply you with clean urine for your drug test. Gain revenge on your neighbour by redrawing his property lines.

At night you can grab your virtual kids and go to a virtual Macdonalds where your dinner choices affect your appearance.

Aspire to promotions through either hard work, education, or back stabbing your fellow city worker.

find exciting random items such as a matchbook cover that talks about Firearms repair school, a used condom or a broken bus shelter.

Equipt yourself with such powerful weapons as the work permit, the audit notice, and the ever destructive invitation to your performance appraisal.

Such interesting side games such as shutting off power, plugging sewer lines and the ever addictive tipping over the job site portapotty.

Jobs in the police, fire, or health services are not available and will be fill by AI players.

Order now.

Maybe they are trying something completely new and original?

That I would like to see. They have the fan base, players will follow them. Time to get creative Blizzard, blow my socks off. Because every MMO out right now sucks and so does the PvP.

They'd be ######ed not to make it Diablo-esque.
