Google is about to enter the phone directory market...

Free local Business search over the phone by calling 1-800-GOOG-411. Also will connect you to the number free of charge.

It's only available in the US at the moment, and is in the test stages. Telus, in comparison, charges a $1 + connection and text msg fee. This will be very useful, and will shake up the landscape fairly quick.

Very cool.

It's $1.50 charged by superpages and passed on through your phone company, regardless of who that is. There is no connection fee. If you're doing it on your cell phone, just go to 'look up' in your web browser and each listing is only 25c.

25 cents is still more than free ...

And the US is still not Canada.

Here I am just trying to help for people who may not know, you point out the obvious. Aren't you a genius?

Uh huh ... well, your point seems to be that it is 'only' 25 cents to do process your way ... and my point is that for some people, the 25 cents will certainly tip things in the favour of using the Google service, when it is available. Anyway, it's not worth getting into an argument with you ...

I hate browsing the internet on a cell phone. In fact, it's just plain stupid. It takes forever and a day.

I didn't know it was Superpages, so that's news to me...However at the end of the day I don't care who is charging a $1.50 to give me 7 numbers. This Google service will be better than anything available to date. And it will eventually be in Canada, look at the rest of Google's services.

I'm not saying it won't be in Canada. All I'm saying is that for those of you unaware of the service, you can do it on your browser more cheaply than calling the number. In addition, you can just use the canada411.com website for free if you're near a real computer. I'm just trying to help people out, for now, while the free service isn't available.

Yeah but this isn't accessing a site. It's a phone number you call and they provide you with a number as well as text you the contact info and address. Possible integration with Google Maps as well as Calander/Address book/gmail and Google SMS is far more promising than the ability to pay extraordinary amounts of money to watch America's Next Top cat Idol clips on my crappy $100 dollar phone.

Google is out innovating everyone and now they are out innovating telecoms, thankfully.

What's the date over/under on Microsoft coming up with Windows Live Phone Directory?

Lol. I was about to thank my own post because I didn't recognize having written it. Then I see it's an old bumped thread.

Yeah, I went to post this as new thread, and did a search for "goog411"

I thought it was neat to see we were talking about this 2 years ago.

The title of this thread made me think of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and the killer phones.

FWIW, I've been using this since last summer in Canada and I've had great results with it.

GOOG 411 is especially great when drunk and you need that quick phone number. A lot better than paying for it.

Googles actually kinda late to this game as most directories have had free voice or SMS 411 for a couple years. In canada Google uses the directories data anyway. Power of their brand though. Even when they are late they get seen as groundbreaking.

I've been using this for a few months as well.

I like it better than regular 411.
