Trying another new idea (the 5 people you want to meet idea worked pretty well as did a few other ones I started).....anyways,

What song pumps you up the most or makes you the happiest and in retrospect what song makes you sad or brings you down the most?

For me the song that pumps me up the most is Boys of Summer by The Ataris.

The song that makes me the saddest is Calling All Angels by Train (beautiful song but that's the song they played at my gf Chantelle's funeral as well as my friends Jen and Angie and it gets me every time).

She Talks to Angels by the Black Crowes is one that makes me sad. It played right after I took my dog to the vets to be put down. Times Like These by the Foo Fighters makes me both happy and sad. Happy for memories of the Cup run and sad for a very good friend's funeral.

I remember driving back from my Moms funeral and "Higher" by Damn Yankees was on the radio.

Everytime I hear that song now I instantly flash back to that cold snowy day in NL in 1990.

For some reason "Vent" by Collective Soul makes me turn the knob to 11.

Yeah, me too. They played that song at the funeral of the little brother of a friend of mine.

I always get an adrenaline rush when I hear the opening lick to the Stones' great tune Start Me Up.

Coming up with a saddest song is easy for me... Ruby's Arms by Tom Waits. It's got some personal relationship stuff tied up in it for me, but even before that, it might have been my pick.

As for happiest, that's a bit more difficult. Maybe Shatner's cover of Common People -- while the subject matter isn't particularly happy, it never fails to put me in a good mood.

OK, I have to ask, Jen and Angie who, in 2004 two sister who went to school here in Birch Hills died in a car crash, Jennifer and Angela. Did you happen to live anywhere near Birch Hills, or am I just out in left field here?

Sad songs:

The River, Bruce Springsteen

Then I got Mary pregnant
And, man, that was all she wrote
And for my 19th birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
And the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle
No flowers, no wedding dress

Brick, Ben Folds

They call her name at 7:30
I pace around the parking lot
Then I walk down to buy her flowers
And sell some gifts that I got
Can't you see
It's not me you're dying for
Now she's feeling more alone
Than she ever has before

She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly
Off the coast and I'm headed nowhere
She's a brick and I'm drowning slowly

Brick, Ben Folds
That is a beautiful song but very hard to listen to...

It's always hard for me to pick just one "best this, or worst that", but here goes:

Saddest:

Rites of Man by Spirit of the West - Based on an acquaitance of the band who lost his wife and baby during childbirth

I found my coat
Had trouble with the sleeves
We lifted your box
And bent at the knees
Know what tears the most?
It's the disregard for your holy ghost
You left the world, the world kept going

Now I'm alone
I'm alone
And I don't fit in here in our home
Where nothing tastes the same
With the tip of my tongue
Holding on to your name

Happiest:

Saturday Morning by Eels - a great pop tune re-living the joys of being a kid.

Saturday Morning
And who’s gonna play with me?
Six in the morning, baby
I got a long, long day ahead of me

The parents are sleeping soundly
The neighbors are dead as wood
I’m getting up and coming over
We gotta rock the neighborhood

Nothing’s ever gonna happen ‘round here
If we don’t make it happen
Sleep away the day if you want to
But I got something that I gotta do

Too many happy songs....

Saddest songs...

"That's My Job" by Conway Twitty

I challenge any male who doesn't hate his father to listen to the recording of this song without tearing up.

THAT'S MY JOB
Recorded by Conway Twitty
Writer: Hap Hall?

I woke up cryin' late at night - when I was very young
I had dreamed my father - had passed away and gone
My world revolved around him - I couldn't lie there anymore
So I made my way down the mirrowed hall and tapped upon his door.

And I said, "Daddy, I'm so afraid!
How would I go on, with you gone that way?
Don't wanna cry anymore
So may I stay with you?"

And he said,
"That's my job, that's what I do
Everything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

Later we barely got along - this teenage boy and he
Most of the fights it seems - were over different dreams
We each held for me ...
He wanted knowledge and learning - I wanted to fly out west
"Said I could make it out there - if I just had the fare
I got half, will you loan me the rest?"

And I said, "Daddy, I'm so afraid
Theres no guarentee in the plans I've made
And if I should fail, who will pay my way back home?"

And he said,
"That's my job, that's what I do
Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

Every person carves his spot - and fills the hole with life
And I pray someday I might - light as bright as he.

Woke up early one bright fall day - read the tragic news
After all my travels, I settled down - within a mile or two
I make my livin' with words and rhymes - and all the tragedies
Should go into my head and out instead - as bits of poetry.

But I say, "Daddy I'm so afraid
How will I go on - with you gone this way
How can I come up - with a song to say, "I love you."

"That's my job, that's what I do
Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me ...
That's my job, you see."

"Ev'rything I do is because of you
To keep you safe with me."

Down In a Hole by Alice in Chains

Layne Staley left his pain on so many songs, but this one really comes through.

saddest: mad world gary roberts
Hockey on the mind? I thought it was by Gary Jules, not Roberts. ;)

Trout, I agree, Brick is a fantastic tune but very sad. "Evaporated," the last song on that CD, is another sad one, as is "Smoke"...on the other side of the coin are "Kate," "Steven's Last Night in Town," both very jolly tunes. BFF were good for touching all emotions in their songs.

Another really great song that can be the happiest song in the world at one time, and the saddest another, is "Viðrar Vel Til Loftarasa" by Sigur Ros, probably my favourite song in the world for the last two years.

I've got a lot of songs that make me happy, or that get me pumped up. Sad songs though, definately number one on my list is Steve Warriner's Holes in the Floor of Heaven. It gets to me every time and if I dont turn it off, I'll wind up crying for sure. I first heard it around the time of my grandma's death. The Power of Your Love by Rebecca St. James was sang at a friends funeral recently by two of his friends, and it gets to me. Also Robbie Robertson's Shine Your Light. Every time I listen to it I think of the part of Ladder 49 where it was played, and I just think of the sacrifice emergency workers make and how much I appreciate it. Red Hot Chili Peppers Under the Bridge.

Nevertheless I'm gone

the cover of Angels from Montgomery by the Leslie Spit Treo ~ALWAYS~ puts a smile on my face as the 1993 Cape Breton Oilers used it as their playoff song when they marched onto win the Calder Cup.

While there are a lot of songs that get me down, and lots that pick me up. There is no song that instantly makes me sad.

However, the video for Van Halen's "Right Now" I can't sit through. A few months ago I randomly looked it up on YouTube, it was the first time I saw the video since my dog died. When the scene showing a Golden Retriever rolling over with his tongue out playing came up and the words "God kills moms and dogs every day because he has to" I completely broke down... now if that video comes on TV I change the channel, or leave the room, I just can't take it. (My golden died suddendly a year ago last January, I was REALLY attached to him, and with him only being 7 we all took it hard)
