What's with the commercials on X 92.9 promoting the new DJ? They beep out his name but "can't" say who it is. Sounds like the name starts with an F, thought it may be Forbes but I really can't see it happening.

Anyone in the know have any inside info?

Forbes has a deal the likes of which another radio station in Calgary would not copy.

And, Forbes going to 92.9 would be bad for that station, IMHO.

Good marketing, though.

Ugh, Gerry Forbes is one of the most untalented ######bags I have ever heard. It's incredibe how that guy can manage to be that lame and unfunny.

Forbes has his moments, but once you've listened to him for a few months he can get stale. I got tired of hearing the same novelty songs every morning.

I don't mind DJs, but I get annoyed when they start to believe their anecdotes and personal causes deserve more airtime than the news or traffic or the end of a song.

Is it Frasier?

Wasn't a DJ from The Rock 106.7 in lethbridge moving to 92.9? The name of that guy I seem to recall is Frasier?

Why do I have so many questions?

I think he's pretty smart. He lowers himself to the L.C.D. because he knows it sells and makes the station, and himself, more money.
He's making a lot more money then people think, thanks to the station recognition and his profile being rasied.

Anyone remember him on Lite 96? I can't recall where he was before that, but his name was known from before that...it was early-mid 90's I think. He then went to Edmonton for a year before back with CJAY.

Marketing. Marketing. Marketing.

He had his wedding take place on live television when the A Channel first started up in Calgary. They had a special Saturday edition of the Breakfast Show featuring his nuptials and reception.

Don't know anything about this new dj but does anyone else think X has gone way down hill since it started?
I was really liking it at first, but they have greatly reduced the amount of alternative music they play and are playing a lot of generic CJ92 like rock now. Every song they play sounds like Hedley to me now.

Today at work, we officially gave up on it and changed the station for the first time this month.

I'm sure he's reasonably intelligent, but the fact is the guy does not have comedic chops. The only way that guy would have a career is if he was tucked away in a corner of Canada and had a bunch of Nickelback listening hicks as an audience. ;)

Completely unsurprising. Happens all the time, especially those who cliam to be niche stations.

Q107 played all sorts of obscure stuff when it started..to their credit, they still play a fair share of B sides, but a couple months in, you heard the standarad popular classic rock. Vibe too...not as "urban" as it was when started.

In X's case, like others, a lot of huffing and puffing in advance to claim about how different you are/going to be/breath of fresh air.

But, it doesn't take long for the managers/owners to start looking at hard numbers and realizing that being so niche is going to run them out of business a lot sooner then expected.

There's a new punk show wed nights. I heard the Dead Kennedys today on X. CJay wouldn't touch that with a 10 Foot Pole (pun intended).

I seem to recall that he started off on QR77 before they went to an all talk format.

He was originally on Lite-96 (that's when he camped out in the towers at McMahon trying to get a sell-out for a BC game in the summer of 91...strangely, they show a photo of this in the latest commercial for CJAY). Then he went to QR ("Gerry's flipped...to AM") for a couple of years.

His contract with QR required him to leave the Calgary market for a minimum period before going to another Calgary station, so he went to the Bear in Edmonton (where his brother was the program director) for a while before joining CJAY.

I'm glad I'm not the only one...although I gave up 2 weeks ago. I enjoy the 6 oclock rock report because it actually plays some new music but after that it's the same crap again and again. The last time I listened to it they played the new AFI song twice within 2.5hours and then followed it up with SUM41 and Billy Talent...no thank you. I also don't understand their desire to be like every other radio station in Calgary and play the tragically hip all the time (love them or hate them they're incredably overplayed). X opened themselves up to so much great Canadian music with their format that they don't need to resort to filling their Canadian content quota's with the tragically hip. Hell CBC Radio 3 can make an entire radio station playing it and at the same time somehow get away without playing the same song 4 times a day every day.

Cjay has a hold of the crappy new rock market...X aint going to last long by going back to playing the same stuff Cjay plays. At least Cjay has the variety in that it plays the same classic rock that Q107 plays and the same new rock that X plays leaving it with the biggest playlist...and that's not saying alot.

It is going to ge oven farther downhill when the new DJ joins up. He is Fraser Tuff from Lethbridge's Rock 106. People love him down here for some reason. He is the reason I stopped listening to Rock 106.

I'll go on record as being perhaps the only CP member willing to admit that he/she listens to and actually enjoys X. I enjoyed the station more when they only played music. DJ banter and commercials aren't my thing but they will continue to be a staple on free over-the-air radio. They're playlist seems to be a bit limited (Billy Talent and Fallout Boy 12 times a day, guaranteed!) but I've found it to be a nice change from CJAY.

A band doesn't have to be obscure and struggling financially for me to enjoy their music. Guess I might be part of the L.C.D. and not as uber-cool as others on this list but there's at least one vote for X.

I heard Fraser was coming a while back. Quitre frankly, I was never a big fan of Fraser and Rosie in the mornings in Lethbridge mostly because I found it difficult to listen to their voices on Rock 106 for extended periods of time. To my ears it seemed like there was way too much bass or something. Not a knock against Fraser per se...

And they are teasing this like people in Calgary should know who this guy is?

It is deceptive to give the NO NICKLEBACK GUARANTEE, and then play a ton of bands that sound just like Nickleback.

What is wrong with the signal strength? I just get static.

They played a few bands I liked (Islands, New Pornos), but too much Nickleclones.

Great! Hahahaha!!

A friend told me about the No Nickleback slogan, I almost considered checking out ol' FM testicular radio for a second. I'll pass on the Default and Theory of a Deadman, barf.

I actually haven't heard either of those bands on that station.

Apparantly their actual radio tower isn't up and running, yet so they are using a temporary one. Atleast that what I heard.

As for the station itself... X is alright. Better than Cjay, but thats not really saying much.

I don't think they play them either, but you better like Sum 41, Billy Talent, AFI and Alexisonfire if you're gonna tune in.

You may have actually liked it the first couple of weeks. I remember the first day I tuned in they played Radiohead, Modest mouse, the Shins and The Cure in a row and I was lovin it. but alas....

Is their new tower up yet? I noticed that their RDS signal has changed to a more detialed one and thought that might have been because of a switch to the new tower.

I like AFI, don't mind Billy Talent but there really is no use for them if you have a few At The Drive In albums.

In all seriousness, I'm not going to bother listening. I get all my music from Sirius without the 20+ mins of commercials each hour. Although I am happy that CJAY has some competition.

I sold a vehicle to morning show host Roger Kincaid the other week. He was a pretty cool guy. He told me he might mention my name once or twice on air if the manager would let him to get word out because our dealership is so new. We'll take all the advertising we can get.

You can't say that Sirius is any less repetitive though. I'll listen to Alt Nation and hear that Fall Out Boy song every 90mins.

Are they completely up and running now? The sound quality still sounds poor to me. More mono than stereo.

They're playing Johnny Cash's rendition of "Hurt" right now. That's +1 for X92.9.
