That is sad news. I was watching the Preakness from the Mirage sportsbook. That place was abuzz for the race, but you could hear a pin-drop as soon as Barbaro pulled up.

There were no celebratory cheers following that race - the sportsbook took on a pretty sombre mood. He was one fast horse...unlike that good-for-nothing bum, Sweetnorthernsaint!

So sad about Barbaro. My husband is from Kentucky and he went to Derby in 2006 and saw Barbaro win. So unfortunate that he suffered from the leg injury at the Preakness. RIP Barbaro

I was in TI's at the time, you could hear a pin drop for about 5 minutes afterwards. Quite sad, makes me think twice about the value of horse racing.

Sure, it's sad, but I'm of the mind that it's not even worth mentioning. I know there are people who are gonna rip me and call me an *******, but come on, its a horse, its not a human, its a horse. It's not news when a regular horse dies, so why is it news now??

Now, if you come at me a say, "well, its not news when a regular person dies, so why do we mention it when famous people die", then you're just equating people to animals and thats just plain dumb.

Here's my question. Why are horses so quickly put down?

Can a horse not live a life with only 3 legs? With a horsey-wheelchair thing? In a bed or something like that?

It just seems like anything to do with a horse's leg mean instant death for the horse. Maybe someone with a little more Equine knowledge can fill me in.

Ok VFF, sounds like I am going to have to try and figure out your entire standpoint on the hierarchy of all objects, so I will bow out.

Madman, I'm no horse expert, but from what they said on the news last night they put him down because as the horse becomes accustomed to walking on 3 legs, the sheer weigh of his body puts undue stress on the rest of his ribs, back, spine, etc. So basically the remainder of the horse's life is spent in sheer agony.

No it is because the horse is famous. Famous people and animals are news when they die. Regular every day shmos and animals are not. Its the fame that matters, not whether they are human or beast.

That's a cop out answer, you know what the intent of the question was.

It's quite simple, the horse was famous. Regular people aren't ... interest is deeply impacted by fame.

Also, it's quite clear that you have a hierarchy where you put humans above animals, and that's fine, but just accept that many others don't. And it really doesn't matter what you think of them ... as it doesn't matter what they think of you right?

Bill Simmons (Sports Guy) on Rome yesterday was hilarious with a schtick about whether the Super Bowl should be delayed b/c "It's just too soon - we need some time to get over this." Funny, but from the looks of this thread a few might have found it offensive.

Anyway, the whole Barbaro things reeks of hypocrisy. Horse racing is an absolute meat grinder for these animals, yet when the predictable happens with great frequency, there is a big upswell of sorrow. Barbaro is a horse, and horses are used as meat animals (canners) all over the world.

If Fluffy the poodle gets mauled by a coyote at Fish Creek Park, it gets far more attention and Letters to the Editor than most human tragedies.

I do a lot of wills for people - the SPCA will soon be wealthier than the Catholic Church. People seem more likely to make donations to animal charities than anything else.
