After going 5-for-5 on Tuesday, Ichiro goes 4-for-6 on Wednesday night. He's just 10 hits shy of tying George Sisler's single season hits record. The Mariners have 10 games remaining.

He'd cooled off in September - only hitting .376

My money is on Ichiro.

Ichiro was slumping big time for a couple of games but the last two nights should assure him the record.

On a related note - Edgar Martinez's career is enterring its final games. Great hitter (and former Cannon to boot).

He's at 249 now with 9 games to go. If he keeps beating out all these little squibbers, he'll set it by the end of the weekend.

Its really too bad the City didn't pony up for the new stadium.. would have been nice to see some AAA baseball.

The kicker is that the owners of our new Northern League team are putting up to $5 million into Foothills park, including private boxes. An investment like that five years ago would have saved the Cannons AND the Trappers.

Regardless, mark your calendar for May 27, when our new pro team plays it's first home game.

Really? That is good news. Burns stadium is really a joke and a dump. It's kind of embarassing even having a stadium like that. Edmonton got themselves a new stadium, why couldn't we? As crappy as Edmonton is, they seem to have decent sports facilities. Commonwealth is way better then McMahon, Telus field tops burns, and I believe they also renovated there horse racing track. The only thing we have better is the saddledome over rectum place, and I guess that's what really matters! It would be nice to pump in about 25 million on McMahon stadium. Tear down that clubhouse, and make the seats flow around with a new locker room underneath. As well close up the stadium from the outside. Make it look a little modern.

Telus Field is newer and "prettier" looking, but I'd take foothills over it easily. Foothils has all natural grass, not that artificial infield, the seating is better - Telus field pushes the "peasants" who dont own private or club suites to the back, keeps the players away from the fans and the net interferes with the sight lines.

McMahon isnt Commonwealth, that's for sure, but it is still one of the finest football stadiums in the country.

The problem with McMahon is:
a)It was built in the '60s, seating only about 20,000
b)It's built in the residential area, which has noise bylaws
c)Those noise bylaws restrict having any decent events there

Those decent events such as big concerts, means that place sits empty that many more nights then Edmonton. That extra income over the years would've allowed expansion plans like you suggest, allowing more concerts and events, bringing in more money etc etc.

Commenwealth can hold those events because it was built to have 60,000 from the start, as well as parking for that many, because its in the middle of an industrial area, thus no noise restraints.

I'd take Burns over Telus field, just for the grass infield alone.

No amount of money could have kept the Cannons in town, unless you built a ball park with a retractable roof (which wouldn't happen).

The bottom line is weather and a poor baseball fanbase killed the Cannons. No amount of renovations to Pork Park would have put butts in the seats when the temperature was barely above freezing in April and sometimes even in May. The team continued to draw poorly during the summer in later years after the novelty wore off. Renovations may have lured some people to the park, but not enough to make the franchise financially viable.

This new northern league is more suited for Calgary's climate because it runs from the May long weekend to Labor Day (which is still no guarantee for good weather in Calgary).

As of Tuesday morning, Ichiro needs five hits with six games to go. He could go into a slump (at his pace) and still break the record.

He needs five hits to tie, six to break.

Of course, Suzuki already owns the record for "most hits in a 162 game season."

just to update this, he got two last night, so I believe he's down to 3 to tie, 4 to break.

#255 in the 5th inning @ Oakland on Wed night.

Needs two to tie

It's amazing to think what Ichiro might have been capable of doing had he played his entire professional career in the major leagues. In four seasons, the lowest number of hits he has produced is 208. If you were to project his numbers over 15 years, Ichiro would be among the top 5-6 lifetime hitters in baseball. It took most of the players at that level more than 20 years to amass those numbers.

Who knows if he'd be able to to produce at that level over that length of time. But few of the top lifetime hitters in the game were able to consistently put up 200+ hit seasons like Ichiro has.

Suzuki may have been among the top four average hitters in baseball history, but nowhere near the top four hitters overall. Nor even top 50.

Suzuki just broke the record, and the Mariners reacted like they won the World Series.

Major, major overreaction.

what's wrong with it? ... they have nothing else to be excited about after such a dismal season ... let them enjoy their one positive situation.

I didn't see the celebration, but how could you expect anything less. Ichiro breaks an 84-year old record, this thing has been hyped to death for more than a month. Mariners players have been living this thing day in and day out.

Now if Ichiro breaks his own record next year (maybe if he doesn't slump for the first month of the season like he did this year) I would expect a more subdued celebration.

Actually he broke a record less than half that old.

George Sisler only had 154 games to do that, it took Suzuki 160.
