Hamilton has to make a decision to go forward with Masoli or Evans. The one they don't pick will land in Edmonton, Ottawa, or Toronto and I expect that to be Masoli as he's 33 years old while Evans is only 28.

He wasn't really that good last season. He's better than what they had last season but IMO he's close to where Kevin Glenn was at that age where he's a great backup that can come in and start for stretches.

If anyone’s interested, the Stamps are retiring their current black/third jerseys this year, and it sounds like they will be wearing a “new” third jersey next year.

Part of me thinks they’ll just make the retro jerseys from this year their third jersey for next year, but I guess we’ll see…

Maybe it is just me, but wow, almost every team has most of their roster as free agents. I hope this does not mean tons of guys changing teams.

Nice to see the two-time defending grey cup champion bombers here in the middle of summer - seems to me like it has been a while.

It is absolutely absurd actually and only hurts the game itself.

How can the league expect the fans to get passionate about teams and the game itself, when its impossible to create a relationship with players on that team.......because a majority of them are gone after a year or 2.

I am considering purchasing a jersey here and I have zero idea who's it should be,since I have no idea who might be here in 2 years.

41 names on the current Stampeders list are to be FA at this point. Mind boggling.

The Montreal Alouettes have released American quarterback Trevor Harris and Canadian offensive lineman David Foucault, the team announced on Monday.

Harris had a $300,000 off-season roster bonus due on Feb. 1, 2022, which made it impossible for Montreal to keep him after they re-signed Vernon Adams Jr. through 2023 last week.

Assuming Evans stays in Hamilton, and with Masoli to Ottawa looking more likely, is Harris the odd man out? I’m guessing a return to Edmonton won’t happen…

I wouldn't rule out Toronto. I could see him and Bethel Thompson in a 1A/B situation as you can just rotate them after bad games seeing neither is anything more than mediocre at this stage.

Toronto makes sense, assuming Harris is willing to sign for "backup" money (or at least 1B). I remember hearing during the season that they were also pretty high on Pipkin, which is partially why they let Arbuckle go.

We’ll see, but Jones has worked for so many teams (six, I think) that he’s running out of CFL options. He has his dream job with full control in rebuilding a team and as soon as those contracts of fired execs run out he’ll have money to spare. I think he’ll be there several years.

He will get them back to respectability on the field. They will be in the mix every year but of course there will be controversy and questionable personnel moves at times. He may even stick around long enough to get fired as I don't know if he's got a lot of options left outside of the XFL.

Hughes signed a two-year contract with the Argos in February, which had one year left on it for the 2022 season worth $145,000 in hard money. He played nine games with the double blue, recording 18 tackles and two sacks during the shortened 14-game regular season in 2021.

Rats, I was hoping for Jason Maas, but the Elks have brought in Stephen McAdoo as OC.

The Edmonton Elks have confirmed three additions to their 2022 coaching staff, unveiling some of the pieces joining new general manager and head coach Chris Jones.

Among the coaches on Jones’ new staff are two key faces from Edmonton’s last CFL championship team.

Stephen McAdoo (offensive coordinator) and Jarious Jackson (pass game coordinator and quarterbacks) return to the Green and Gold in the same positions they held during Edmonton’s run to a Grey Cup title in 2015.

https://www.stampeders.com/2022/01/07/stamps-mitchell-restructure-2022-contract/

“I’m very pleased that Bo yet again has demonstrated a team-first mentality,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “I look forward to seeing him continue his winning ways on the field.”

“With the changing environment in the CFL over the past few years due to many circumstances, I understand that to have a winning team it is in my best interest to restructure my contract to allow us to re-sign Jake Maier, as well as other players,” said Mitchell, who joined the Stampeders in 2012. “Having another winning QB in the room will only make us stronger. My driving force still is and always will be, to be the best QB for the Calgary Stampeders that I can be and I look forward to a successful 2022 season.”

“I’m excited to have Bo back and I’m thankful that he again has shown himself to be a great leader,” said head coach Dave Dickenson. “The quarterback position will be a strength of our team and I’m really looking forward to the 2022 season.”

Reilly's future is up in the air and while Nathan Rourke looks like he can play in the CFL, you would think BC would still like to add a veteran QB. If Reilly does retire, they would be in the mix for either Masoli or Harris (more likely Masoli).

Dang. He was definitely on the back end of his career but he still put up some decent numbers last year. Had a very solid career.

It does free up some money to go after Harris or potentially Masoli (assuming he's vaccinated and can play). Rourke didn't look out of place but I think you need to sign someone with a bit more experience. With Campbell as HC, I bet they go after Harris.

Elks hired a new president. Interesting hire...Edmontonian of Filipino decent, who runs an MMA promotion in Singapore.

At the very least, you can't say that they didn't go outside of the usual circles for a leader. Hopefully he can bring some new promotional and marketing ideas into the team and the league.

Victor Cui as the new president is a fantastic pick and way off the board. I love it. Guy helps run at $1B MMA empire and has years of experience in the sports media industry.

Plus, Cui is very humble and appreciate of his position in life and even though he's based in Singapore, he has strong roots in Edmonton, knows a lot of the local community, and wants to see local sports succeed in town.

I'm definitely not an Elks fan but that is a really, really smart step both for the Elks and his potential influence on the CFL.

Still we have to look at it relative to what other CFL QB's get paid. It's starter money in the CFL and IMO he's very borderline as a starting QB. You can win some games with him but he has a lot of moments where he's not very good. That said I suppose there aren't a lot of great options after maybe Masoli. I feel Harris is serviceable but close to washed up and it's pretty bleak after that. It would be nice to see some young QB's break through as it feels like the CFL is in a down time for QB talent.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have re-signed star receiver Duke Williams to a one-year contract for the 2022 season, per sources.

Williams’ fresh pact will pay him $260,000 in hard money. There were a lot of teams involved with big cash on the table. He had other offers for more dollars — up to $300,000 — but he felt like the Riders can win the Grey Cup which would fulfill his goal of winning a CFL championship.

- Bombers have lost some key pieces on offence, defence will still be strong
- Riders strangely quiet for a team hosting the Grey Cup
- Elks signing some big names, but lots of question marks remain
- BC with an all-Canadian QB tandem is a bold strategy

- Argos continuing strategy of signing former Stamps players lol - I like the Ja'Gared Davis signing.
- Redblacks will be much better in 2022 and will likely make the playoffs
- Ti-Cats appear to have taken a step back. Dane Evans will have to step up big time
- Not quite sure what Montreal is doing

The Calgary Stampeders have signed national defensive back Elie Bouka.

Bouka – who has made Calgary his off-season home since his days with the University of Calgary Dinos – has 28 regular-season games and five post-season contests of Canadian Football League experience over three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

“The addition of Elie improves our Canadian content and adds to our depth at defensive back and on special teams,” said Stampeders president and general manager John Hufnagel. “We’re pleased to welcome him back to Calgary.”

“I have had the chance to call Calgary home for a decade now,” said Bouka. “Having the opportunity to be back here playing for the city that has given me so much love and support means more than words can express. I am ready to play my heart out every week for the love of the city.”

I think you might be confusing a hard cap and a luxury tax system with a soft cap.

CFL has never had a hard cap. As long as it’s been in place it has been the latter. There are “penalties” for going over but it isn’t like the nhl where being cap compliant is a necessity to ice a team.

CFL is much closer to baseball cap than it is to the nhl.

No confusion at all. We all know it's not a real salary cap because teams violate it nearly annually. The issue with the Argos is that they are building teams through free agency which should not be possible when you consider free agency is where players get overpaid for their services. Since the CFL is very secretive about the whole thing nobody really knows how much teams are really spending over the cap. Kavis Reed isn't the sharpest pencil in the box but even he could come up with a system to circumvent the cap. I just wish they would either go back to letting teams spend as much as they want or make it a real salary cap as the way it is now teams that actually try to be compliant like the Stamps are at a disadvantage because they can't keep all their players.

Danny Austin followed up his tweet with an article in the Calgary Sun today about JWL who says he is fully recovered from his broken wrist and is excited to be catching passes from Bo.

“Yeah, during some of the NFL workouts I was able to run routes with Bo Levi … so we kind of have a connection that way. Not to be too cynical, but it's not likely to attract many more casual eyes to the University game, and appears just more of a bone for the U of A and its players to have a chance to play at Commenwealth. Maybe for those fans who find it harder to get to the U of A's facilities and Commenwealth is more accessible?

Regardless, to get to the stadium 5h earlier/spend 10h at the stadium and watch two games, you'd have to be pretty hardcore football fan, which means you'd probably be going to U of A games already. Those that do come early are tailgating anyways (if there is any place to tailgate there).

Stamps doing it would be even less so of a novelty, since they both already play out of the same stadium.

But, the effort making off the field is commendable. I have a feeling this owner will be having to apologize for Jones in a year or two, however.

IMO if they were to go 4 down ball it's likely a matter of time until an XFL merger. The 4 down talk is strange because it would necessitate going to NFL sized fields as teams could easily dink and dunk down the field with ease on the Canadian field.

I'm not sure why purists are so gung-ho about CFL rules. Interest in the NFL is soaring and the fan bases in the CFL are sagging.

Doesn't it at least warrant a good-faith discussion about rule changes to align itself more with the NFL if it gets butts in the seats?

I do think part of it is the thought that having the different rules is what keeps the CFL unique.

To me the bigger issue is the calendar.

I still think the CFL would be much better off with their season running Mid April - late September than Mid June - late November.

-Avoid your playoffs and championship overlapping with NHL and NBA season starting.

-Less overlap with the NFL season (NFL generally starts in Sept) and you'd only have about 4 week overlap

-Weather is generally better in Canada in April/May than it is in October/November (IMO). Personally I feel like I'm more likely to go sit outside and watch a game in April/May than I am in October/November.

I'm not sure about other cities/provinces but Football in the cold > Football in the rain IMO.

I also think the issue has less to do with the CFL rules but how the CFL game is marketed and presented as entertainment. Interestingly, I'd argue that the NFL has made more changes to its rulebook (roughing the passer and pass interference penalties to protect QB's and to encourage passing) to make the game closer to the CFL in terms of emphasizing passing and offence. I'd consider those types of changes before other things that are more uniquely "Canadian".

The Calgary Stampeders have signed American quarterback Chase Fourcade ahead of the 2022 season.

The six-foot, 200-pound pivot was a four-year starter at Nicholls State and left the school as the Colonels’ all-time leader in passing yards, passing touchdowns, completion percentage and rushing touchdowns. Fourcade was the Southland Conference’s player of the year as a junior and the conference’s offensive player of the year as a senior. In 50 career games, he completed 804 of 1,350 passes for 10,707 yards and 70 touchdowns. Fourcade also had 703 carries for 1,701 yards and 35 scores.

I am not sure this is true. He did mention once to me that if they moved the season up substantially, they would consider holding training camp in a different location - like Florida or somewhere else south. That could be an option to get the season started earlier.

I agree from my coaching days, it is tough to teach football in the rain.

I think the likelihood of good weather at the beginning of June is far better than the likelihood of good weather at the end of November. I find it is terrible the most important games are played in completely different conditions than the rest of the season.

12-15 degrees with a bit of rain isn't bad. -20 is bad. I've been to too many -20 games. As I get older, I am less excited about them.
