It's gotta be Sarge, but I have a soft spot for Jordan Leopold. Like Brodie, very skilled an intelligent, but not an imposing player on the ice. Yet, he had a very good career and contributed to some major moments in Flames history. I almost went Leopold and I wouldn't blame anyone else who did.

Man, tough one here.

Was a huge fan of Jordan Leopold. Bouwmeester had a solid run in Calgary. McCrimmon was largely before my time as a Flames fan. Rasmus is probably my favorite current player.

Brad for now, Rasmus one day if he plays a long time for us.

Went with Sarge but almost picked Kyte because I met him when I was a kid.

It's gotta be Sarge.

Yup....definition of a guy that played the game the right way. Tough SOB as well.

Made sure his own end was taken care of first but also was pretty good on offense as well. Really smart player.

People forget McCrimmon was named a second-team all-star. Back when the NHL still recognized defensive defencemen with awards and all-star nods.

Suter was also named as a second-team all-star that season (87-88). Can't be many times in modern NHL history that two d-men from the same team were named 1st or 2nd team all-stars. Last one was probably Niedermeyer and Pronger.

I went with Andersson, just to be un-apologetically presentist.

I went with McCrimmon, but I took a long hard look at Hamrlik and Bouwmeester. In the end we didn't do well with Bouwmeester on the team (not his fault the team wasn't built that strongly but he wasn't a part of teams where he was able to show how valuable he could be) and Hamrlik spend only two short years here. MacCrimmon did well in his only 3 years in Calgary. He was a hard nosed leader who helped take us to the Cup and was the captain after Lanny Retired.

Me too...one of my favorite current Flames and I feel he will be more impactful than anyone else on the list...

Burned in my brain is that behind the scenes video of Kevin Lowe insisting they take Seabrook over Bouwmeester for Team Canada in 2010.

Kevin Lowe is no good.

I don't want to take anything away from McCrimmon but three years with the Flames is not a very long time. Andersson, however, is under contract longer than any current Flame.

I know McCrimmon is the easy choice and will win this one in a landslide (and rightfully so), but I see Andersson as a #1A in the very near future.

I voted for not just what Andersson already is, but also for what he’s going to be.

(I also almost voted for Rautakallio just because he was by far my favourite player-name as a kid, lol.)

Almost went Hamrlik. When Phaneuf entered the league and looked like a franchise player, Hamrlik was the reason. Raised the game of anyone he played with.

I think Bouwmeester is the best player out of all of those names but I voted for McCrimmon cause he had a huge impact in his time here.

Marsh, Russell, Sheehy... I mean, obviously it goes to Gio, but there have been some pretty decent #5s here.

I liked Hamrlik a lot when he was with the Flames, but I had to go with Sarge.

Some pretty decent players to pick from in this group though.

Didn't skip #2 and that was a bigger slam dunk than #5, IMO.

Sarge for me but Hamrlik was a pretty underrated player. He really was amazing as Phaneufs partner. Dion never had the same magic with anybody else in his entire career.

Shout out to Baxter, Ference and Leopold. Andersson also has a good chance to make his mark among these fours.

I voted Sarge, but all of Hamrlik, Leopold, Bouwmeester and Russell were all quite good for us and Andersson hopefully will be the winner of this in a few years time.

Flames best shut down defenseman ever.

Hands down, Sarge.

Sarge today, Rasmus in five years (hopefully).

Maybe the better question is who is in second place? Leopold, Hamrlik, Bouwmeester, and Russell all had their strengths and weaknesses, but none really stand out above the rest. In terms of best actual player, Bouwmeester is probably on top, but Leopold and Hamrlik were both pretty good as well (in Calgary).

I went with Bouwmeester as I don't really remember enough of Sarge to vote for him, I think Bouwmeester was the most talented player of the ones I did watch, and I think he got the crapped on Brodie treatment from many on CP because he didn't live up to our expectations offensively. He proved his status as a great defenceman by being named to the Canadian Olympic team after being traded to the Blues (and winning a gold medal)

Part of the reason that I have a soft spot for Hamrlik is that the signing brought credibility to the Flames organization after not being able to land high caliber free agents. Combined with the playoff run the previous year, it brought the Flames back into fold for being a destination.

Kind of surprised Jay did not get more votes.
I can see Brad winning, but Jay's body of work as a Flames is very similar. Maybe not as good defensively.

Hammer had the best body of work from his career but he was not with the Flames long enough.

I voted Hamrlik... I think he was a huge part of Phaneuf's early success. But shoutout to Kris Russell, who has become a little underappreciated for just how effective he was here.

I wear my CCM retro red with McCrimmon on the back to Flames games. A small tribute to a great, honest player, beast of a defender and tremendous teammate by all accounts. Perhaps one of the all time underrated Flames. Former Flames captain and assistant coach.

Still heartbreaking to remind myself that he’s gone too soon. There always seems to be someone around cutting onions when I think of it.

Went with Sarge but almost picked Kyte because I met him when I was a kid.

Me too! Wasn’t Kyte the first hearing impaired player in the NHL? I think he wore hearing aids when he played.

Lots of likeable players in this poll. I have good memories of Leo, Hamrlik, Bouw, and Russell. Hopefully Andersson can live up to these guys. He seems to be on the right track.

Weird. Looks like he was #5 in both Atlanta and Calgary (and I only ever remember him wearing #5), but there are tons of images online of him wearing #22 in a Calgary jersey and only a couple of him wearing #5 in a Calgary jersey.

I have no clue what happened, but I remember him as #5 clear as day. Potvin was my favourite player back then, so I have this weird thing about #5s during those early years (for me).

Sarge. Played 3 years here and he was +109 over that stretch (what a beast another year in Philly he was > +80)

Because his tenure was short, Andersson would have a chance to surpass if he has a nice run...

otherwise props to Leopold, Baxter, Jaybo, Pekka, Hamrlik. its been a decent but not spectacular number for the Flames

Bad caption. That's definitely Russell. Probably a mix up because they were both early captains of the team in Calgary and Marsh wore #5 in Atlanta.

This is Marsh...
