So some friends of mine are playing/streaming an old NCAA tournament (from a year most people don’t remember) to still fill out their brackets. Pretty cool idea to keep something going.

Was wondering if there is anyway we could have game nights from 1989? Does this exist out there, would this even be possible?

Know you guys are way smarter than I, so thought I’d send out a seed thought. I was too young in 1989 to really have appreciated it, would be fun to follow with others. (Game every other night?) Game Thread and all??

Who’s with me!

Hey that would be awesome, I'd totally be interested in that

I have game 6 of the final on my computer somewhere, does anyone have the rest?

Who’s with me!I like it. Throw in 1986 game nights as well for the prequel. Those two playoff years are so intertwined.

Not sure if this really fits the bill, and it wouldn't work for a real time thread with commentary (since it isn't video), but I do have in-depth full game reports for every game of the 1988-89 season in this format that includes lots of tidbits that might not be familiar to fans, especially if you weren't born yet.

The game 1 report is extra long (it's the only one for the entire season on 2 pages) since it includes off-season info, with some interesting notes about Vernon, Macoun, Gilmour, Fleury and others, McDonald starting on the 4th line, and how the roster was formulated.

It was created in real-time back in 1988, with some additional info added in the interim for historical perspective.

Like I said, it's not exactly what the OP asked for, but if there's any interest, let me know.

Looks like some people are seeing it, so a couple of things off the top for clarity:

At the time, the NHL was playing 5-minute overtimes with regulation 5-on-5
skaters, with the game finishing as tied if nobody scored in the overtime. Thus,
the 4 periods shown in the scoring totals, and shots on goal.

Also, the apparent discrepancy with the note about Jiri Hrdina's goal although it
doesn't show in the boxscore --- the goal was changed on Friday to Al MacInnis
when Hrdina said he never tipped MacInnis' shot. The boxscore was updated at a
later time, while the narrative note created post-game in real time remains.

Awesome! Really cool stuff. The game notes are most interesting to me. I had to look up that Steve Smith as I had zero memory of him as a player let alone a Flame. He must have been strictly pre-season then lost on waivers. Can I ask how you came across these? Do you have multiple seasons as well?

bobbylouie
03-18-2020, 02:33 PM
Yeah, this guy is a "secondary" Steve Smith who was a 1st round pick for Philadelphia in 1981 and played only 18 games over 6 seasons, NOT the legendary Steve Smith of Edmonton-Calgary lore.

If somebody could privately send me (or just post it here) a screenshot of what a proper "reply to thread" looks like with a photo embedded, that might be helpful since it seems like this would be more effective if I could just post the info directly to the thread rather than link it.

Again, cannot emphasize how much I enjoy seeing things like this. For the longest time it felt (and sometimes still does) hockey was so far behind the times from a historical archive perspective. Sites like Hockey-Reference and Nhl.com have come leaps and bounds sharing historic boxscores and game logs. I still think we have a long way to go as a site like baseball reference is the end-all be-all to baseball stats as the data they've acquired has so many layers.

Would love if a site like Hockey-Reference somehow acquired data from someone like the Hockey News and could post summary recaps and game notes (like what you've posted for those first two 88-89 games). I get that is a huge undertaking but I feel like would be such a valuable tool from an Archival perspective and is incredibly important.

Love it! Man, box scores were something else back them. Seemed like almost every game was like that. I love the full detailed ones as well. I remember the Hockey News only had the player name and either (minor) or (major) next to the name. I believe they changed to full detailed penalties for the 89-90 season.

If I do one game each day, this will be about a 100 day project,
so I guess that seems like a reasonable timetable for now, but
I am located in a Covid hotspot, so circumstances could change

Games two and three were on national television.

The second game, Flames-Kings, was on HNIC at 2030h and part of the first regular season doubleheader telecast for HNIC. The third game was on TSN.

I have been able to collect that information through the library and finding old schedules. I was too young to understand the scheduling and complain.

Love it! Keep them coming as these are some of the high points in my day. A few observations...

1. I had forgotten how hot Hrdina started that season with 11 points in 6 games. He seemed super streaky.

2. Insane depth chart. Wow. Crazy how stacked our lineup was. The defense was just so good as well. The fact that Dana Murzyn wasn't even a regular yet says a lot.

3. Mark Hunter: I didn't know he was getting reps on the first line. It's funny to think he never really reached his true potential during his CGY run. I believe he ultimately got hurt for parts of the season and during the playoffs. I know he also blew out his knee in the 89-90 season. Fully healthy on the top line with Mullen and Gilmour, he probably could have gone 40-40-80 all while sort of serving as protection for Killer and Mullen. All worked out though in the long run :)

4. Another fun tidbit in the Minny game was Mullen's goal being waved off. His 51-59-110 stat line is so engraved in my head, so it's funny to think that it really should have been 52-59-111.

5. Toughness. Wow. What an era. Every team dressed like 4-5 guys who could absolutely chuck 'em. Hell, Shane Churla was probably the toughest of the bunch. IMO, 1988-1996 is my favorite era for hockey. Between the toughness and the offense--just so much to dig into. Reviewing stats from that era just seems a bit more fun that looking at stats from the past 15 years.

He score the most points that year, but it wasn't even the most PPG he had in a season. In 88/89 he had 199 points in 76 games. In 92/93 he was slightly higher with 160 points in 60 games putting him on pace for 202 points in 76 games.

Mario was another level.

Thanks for posting those game sheets. Really takes me back. What a stacked team - Hrdina opens the season with 14 pts in 8 games and he would end the season on the 4th line. Nice to see the Flyers stats as well - those mid-80s Flyers teams were great.

bobbylouie

Good News - Video highlights available from this game.
Bad News - Flames fans might not want to see the clip, which includes several goals and Wamsley getting steamrolled.
More Good News - I still can't get video embedding to work, so it's easily avoidable if you keep your itchy fingers away from the external link

----------------

Also, I've still never understood why goals scored at the expiration of a power play don't count as power play goals. In reality, teams only get 1:59 of playing time to score a "power play goal" and the penalized player never returned to the play before the goal was scored.

And, the Dan Frawley anecdote probably only makes sense if you're at least 80 years old.

Lemieux's 2nd goal though.

Yeah, that was unbelievable--man against boys. Doing all that against arguably the best d-corp in the league that year too. IMO, Mario's run from 87-88 to 95-96 in the best run in the history of hockey. It's an absolute shame he was hurt/battled illness because I think his all-time numbers would have easily cemented him much closer to 99 when it was all said and done. At 8th place in the all time NHL scoring department he is only 198 points behind now second place (Jagr). You have to figure he'd be up there easily with 2,500 points if he didn't miss parts of 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, most of 1994 and all of 1995.

Also, that 89 Penguins teams has always intrigued me. They were made up of Mario, Coffey, Rob Brown and mostly grinders. The put up a ton of goals but played zero D. They also fought a ton--nearly 2,700 team pims.

This also might have been the best game Steve Guenette's career stopping 43 of 44 shots. As most of us know, Flames picked him up as insurance that season for a 6th round pick.

Rob Brown... He could score... if he was playing with Lemieux. He wasn't really dangerous any other time in the NHL.

They did have Dan Quinn who was a good offensive player.

I looked at that 88/89 team and looked at the careers of some guys in that team. Almost all of them had their best offensive production playing on Lemieux's team. For some of them it was night and day difference.

Mario put up 199 points that year. The only other superstar he had was Coffey.

Gretzky did numbers like that with the likes of Messier, Coffey, Kurri, Anderson, etc. Not trying to diminish Gretzky's achievements, but I truly wonder how much Lemieux could have done with better teammates in that same era, without injuries.

I think I'd feel pretty comfortable entering most games with the Top 4 Defense the Capitals could throw out there.

Same--absolutely loving these! The background info and game notes are fantastic insights to the season.

- Safe to say after the 2-1 loss to Vancouver, that may have been the worst stretch this squad played all season.

- Lack of playing time for Lanny must have been frustrating. Was there any friction between him and Crisp? Or did he pretty much know his role at the time?

- Joel Otto had a super slow start to the season. By my count it looks like he has 2 points through 12 games

- One thing that I've always wondered about Jeremy Roenick. Does anyone know why he went the QMJHL route? For being such an advocate for American hockey, I always thought it was interesting that he played Junior in the Q.

Rob Brown was good until his face was destroyed in a bad play - his play never recovered.

Mario’s career without illness and injury - he would have been close to Gretzky’s career numbers IMO.

Interesting that it used to be far more common for skilled forwards to play RW.

Flames Cup winning squad:

RW

Loob
Mullen
M Hunter
McDonald
Fleury

LW

Roberts
Patterson
MacLellan
Peplinski
T. Hunter

The Oilers had Anderson and Kurri at RW. The Flyers had Kerr and Tocchet. I wonder when LW became the skilled winger position.

I'm certain it was Kevin Stevens. Here is the video of his injury. Went for a seemingly routine hit and fell face first into the ice. He had to have surgery on his face afterwards. He did have another solid year and also did well in the lockout shortened season where he missed nearly half the games but if I remember correctly he was battling addictions and it was starting to affect his game.

It happened on May 14, 1993, according to Stevens' Wikipediea page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kevin_Stevens

Spoiler in case you don't want to see him hit the ice.

Yeah, and the numbers he put up in the IHL were very impressive. So good that you'd think he would have had more chances to make the NHL, even with his early success with Mario... the guy must have been lazy or just couldn't skate well enough to keep up in the NHL. I don't really remember why. He had talent though.

I cannot post enough on how great these are. The various news clippings are great as well.

Rob Ramage: A great addition in theory but seemed liked his role was that of much more of Shutdown Dman as opposed to an offensive role. Again, it just shows the depth of the defense that season--just absolutely stacked.

Considering the reduced number of people on the board these days, and that even less of those are old enough to not think that 1988-1989 is about as relevant as the Middle Ages, it's nice to hear that it's worth continuing. Interesting that the PP goal scored by Dineen the following period still holds up. Kind of of a weird situation which I guess has been fixed today by instant replay--right?

Random question for the folks here who used to attend games in the 80s. Was smoking still allowed in the Dome back then? I am trying to pinpoint the time frame when smoking was banned in arenas. I started attending games (Whalers) in the early to mid 90s and have zero memory of anyone smoking, but not sure if it was an arena by arena case.

No...you could not smoke inside the dome but there were areas you could go outside and re-enter.

IIRC you couldnt smoke at the Corral either once the Flames arrived, but before that you could.

Regarding this, it gets somewhat addressed in an article a few days later (that I'll post when it comes up naturally for continuity sake since it includes other road trip info)

Essentially, the league agreed that it was Ramage's stick that caused the foul, so they had a few ruling options. The most obvious to me were:

1. The wrong player was admittedly penalized, but since it already happened it's too late to change anything and Nieuwendyk is on the hook for the “warning” on his way to a 1-game suspension if it happens again.

2. (The most reasonable) The wrong player was penalized and since it already happened it's too late to change anything statistics-wise, but Nieuwendyk gets a clean slate and is off the hook for the “warning” on his way to a 1-game suspension.

3. (The slightly clunky way) The wrong player was penalized, so a correction to the record book will indicate that Ramage should have received the major and accompanying misconduct penalty and he is on the hook for the “warning”

Instead, the league went with a convoluted solution that to me makes no sense:

4. (The silly NHL version) The wrong player was penalized, so the penalty will be wiped from the records entirely as if it NEVER HAPPENED. Neither Nieuwendyk nor Ramage have any penalty minutes added to their records (but the Flames‘ team records include the 15 minutes). However, since a power play goal was scored during the 5-minutes the Flames skated shorthanded, that DID HAPPEN and stands.

Typical NHL. LOL. So wait--are you saying that the PIM was wiped from Nieuwy's totals but still shows up in the team totals from the 88-89 season?

bobbylouie
04-03-2020, 08:33 AM
That's my understanding. The penalty minutes were definitely deducted from
Nieuwendyk's total and definitely not added to Ramage's total. (I have verification of that here). As far as whether they were included in the Flames season total, that would be more adding than I'm up to right now, although there might be a quick way to check if you give me a day. I have the week-to-week team totals so it might only require checking a few games.

Also, my available time is again out of whack here on Friday, so game 17 post coming shortly after I hit the submit reply button on this one.

Now have a relatively definitive answer on the penalty minute thing. Based on the obscurity of this, I'm pretty sure this is the only time in the last 31 years that this has ever come up.

https://i.imgur.com/wovRHsb.jpg

I put “officially” in quotation marks because it reminded of a story that is relevant to all of this, about a project I did for the Elias Sports Bureau a long time ago. During the first meeting, a supervisor came in and reminded us that although accuracy is a primary goal, it should be noted that “official” is NOT a synonym for “accurate”. He then quoted the derivation of official being from some Latin word meaning “of the office”. The point of all this was that in the end “official record” or “official stats” means whatever the office says happened, not necessarily what actually happened. So officially, Nieuwendyk (or Ramage) never high sticked anybody and was never penalized. And officially, the Whalers scored a power play goal, regardless of whether it really happened or not. Because the office says so.

Keep 'em coming, BL! Telling you, these make my day. Just love reading the insights from the season.

One longtime Flame who I still think gets slightly forgotten about and overshadowed is Gary Suter. Largely due to the fact that Chopper became a mega star I have to think back in 1989 (Pre Stanley Cup) that Suter was probably the bigger name and I would think most people thought he would ultimately be the better player. A shame that he missed out on majority of the 89 Cup run with an injury (broken jaw, I think?) His offensive production was always consistent, but how was he considered defensively? He wasn't one of those Coffey/Housley D-men, right? I thought I remember him holding his own defensively, but would love to hear what some of the vets in here have to say.

Regarding the perception of Suter at the time, that gets addressed pretty directly in the game 22 post that will appear here on Wednesday afternoon, so I'll let that speak for itself when it comes up.

More generally, here's a quote from that exact week that speaks of how perceptions can be wrong, especially of young players. It didn't really fit into any of these reports that I prepared at the time so I didn't include it, but it was part of a package that was provided on a weekly basis by a news source for inclusion in newsy-notes type stories.

in 87-88 Suter and Sarge (who were d partners) both made the NHL 2nd all star team, Suter finished 3rd in Norris voting (behind Bourque and Stevens) with Sarge right behind him...now he definitely benefited from the steadying influence of one of the best but the Flames were very lucky to be able to roll that pair and Chopper with Macoun for those glory years

Lurking in the future........unfortunately there's probably more anticipation in your single post (and this one magazine cover story) then there ever would be excitement about his performance on the ice. But like you said, we'll get to that sometime in early June. And realizing/typing that just sent a little chill through me.

1:30 a.m. rambling....

I haven't added my own thoughts much in the first 20 games and have pretty much just stuck to the facts as originally written 31 years ago. But because the content is mostly forgotten by me, I'm essentially following along with everybody else and only read it when I'm going through it the night before to check that everything is formatted and in order while I add in some pictures to spice up the visuals. So there are often surprises for me too.

Something in the next game (21) really made me laugh though. Then I realized that it’s now the year 2020 so maybe it’s wrong to laugh at it. That lasted about 5 seconds before I started laughing again. So it will be in there when the post goes up at 3 p.m. (MT) on Tuesday. My editorial comment about it is ---- "I don't think Reggie Dunlop was in the building during this incident, so he probably should have just stuck to playing 'Lady of Spain'".

Love seeing the old Whalers clips. I grew up outside of Hartford and went to many games at the Civic Center. 89 was a bit before my time though--I was more 93-97.

Regardless, I always like checking the crowd as I always hope to see someone I know! That barn was (and still is) tiny and they didn't draw at all (although the box score above says 14K). In the 80s, my dad worked for an insurance company right next to the Civic Center and they had a corporate box so he went to tons of games in this era.

Thanks for posting these. I am thoroughly enjoying reading these every morning. It's pretty cool to see how deep teams used to be (maybe not the Whalers, though). To me, the 21-team league was the golden age of hockey.

however Gilmour was not- no total shame in that as there are 6 HOFers on that ballot, but the other two were Mike (traded for Gilmour) Bullard, and Jimmy (started his career off great, will start busting soon) Carson

Ha! Same - it's pretty hard to find a hockey fan (let alone Flames fan) in the Charlotte area. The Canes don't resonate here - they ought to change the name to the Raleigh Hurricanes.

The 90-94 Flames were great - so much promise, only to break my heart every Spring. I often wonder what went wrong . . . bad coaching (Crisp and Risebrough benefiting from Badger Bob's legacy?), giving away our veterans for nothing (Ramage, McCrimmon, Mullen?) coupled with leadership retiring (McDonald, Peplinski?) maybe too much faith in our European prospects (Priakin, Johansson, Bergvist, Forslund?), or bad drafting? Probably a little bit of each.

Oh, well it was still good hockey.

BL: Any box score for the prior BoA game?

After watching that EDM/CGY clip, one thing you don't see anymore is that low ice-level glass. Pretty crazy from a security perspective when you think about it. It felt like most barns in this era had that--though I don't think the Dome did.

Also... It dawned on me that at one point in the 80s all the arenas had the team benches across from one another as opposed to the modern style you see today with them being right next to one another. I think by the '89 season every arena adapted to what we have today, right? Same with board ads. There seemed to be a few team in '89 that still went with white board (CHI and NYI come to mind). Anyone else?

Last: I'll give a plug to the YT channel that BL linked in the prior post. I discover that guy a few months ago and glad to see him make the rounds here. He pretty much has the 88-89 season covered for fights, hits and cheap shots: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrpEsLdz2L8KJNPM4u2fsG-PBaG5H7Fss

And not to steal your thunder BL, but here is the aforementioned Messier/Otto fight that took place in the 12/2 game as well: https://youtu.be/IhWmHNaT78g

Regarding the all-star voting... How did McKegney get so many votes? It's not like it was easy to arrange a vote ala John Scott back in those days. He wasn't some scrub but he certainly wasn't a top notch all-star.

I think the first trick was just to get on the ballot. With only 8 slots available for each forward position, that wasn't even enough for the top line player from each of the 10 Campbell Conference teams.

Also, sorry to hear you're still harboring bad feelings about a mid-season game from 32 years ago. Then again, I'm still angry about a game from April 6, 1974, but let's not get into that.... coughBobTaylorcough. I'm assuming it would be WAY too obscure of a reference.

Ha! This made me laugh. Curious, what about this game in particular triggers your memory? Does seem sort of random but I can absolutely relate. Looking back on things, I'll always remember that game against Vegas a few years back where we choked up a two goal lead with like 2 mins to play--I remember just sitting on my couch staring at the screen questioning everything and asking myself "is this (stress) really worth it?".

Klima and Gallant split the Detroi(n)t vote

The only memories I have (and I assume just about anybody else has) was what was reported. The only thing I do remember is that Anderson always had a rocky relationship with the media and it sort of colored anything going on with him. It took him 13 years to get elected to the Hall Of Fame, which seems like a long time considering his credentials. The matter is addressed a little bit in this story from 2008 when he was finally elected.

Man, looking back on it, it's pretty crazy that teams agreed to these exhibition matchups during the middle of the season. If I remember they did them the following year as well. Does anyone remember if there were any major league-wide injuries from these games? Can you imagine if Vernon or Mullen got hurt during one of these games?

bobbylouie
04-24-2020, 09:37 AM
Would need to research it for specifics but my general memory is yes.
One more recent injury that jumps out is John Tavares suffering torn knee
ligaments at the 2014 Sochi Olympics for Team Canada. I suppose it's a little
different when you're playing an extended tournament with the cachet of the
Olympics than if it happens in a truly meaningless out-of-the-blue exhibition
against a Dynamo Riga team that nobody has ever really heard of, but for
an Islanders' fan with no allegiance to Team Canada it must have felt like the
same thing.

Maybe it will come up in the remaining 12 games of this tour, I'm only
reading one game ahead when I prepare the posts and haven't looked at them in
over a decade, so I've been just as surprised when things happen too.

man despite the Flames being on a bit of a slide, they are so deep that they are scratching Mark Hunter who at that point in his career was a 30-40 goal man, and they are scrambling for a way to call up Fleury, all the while Lanny is sitting around too..talked about spoiled by depth! on D Ric Nattress is basically waiting to break someone's ankle so he can get some playing time

Still can't get over how Ranheim never really panned out for us as the goal scorer he was touted to be. I think he put up around 60 goals that year for SLC. I seem to remember someone on here saying that he got hurt in the 91 season and never really regained his confidence and really became a PK guy the rest of his career.

I think what it shows us in part- in retrospect- is how dominant Theo was

for many of us at the time- and we see it a bit in these news clippings- we had these 2 guys tearing up the IHL, both young- one was the scorer and one was the playmaker. Heck Ranheim was the first to be called up- I remember assuming they were equivalent prospects (even if Theo was already more famous due to world juniors etc)

but looking back the age difference of 20 and 22 is actually important. Ranheim hadn't even led his college team in scoring as a senior. Ranheim was a very good prospect (and he was- 1000 NHL games played is incredible), Fleury was a special/rare prospect and drove much of the success (along with the older guys like Chernomaz who was more of a minor league veteran)

the around the league report touches on Mario's magic 5 different goal game

Theo about to be recalled

with their listless play the Flames have fallen 6 points behind the surging Habs *spoiler it won't end this way* (yikes 5 games in hand!)

I seem to remember that he didn't have the same speed after his return but still did fairly well. Not as expected/hoped though. It was after Dave King became coach that Ranheim was used strictly as a defensive player and his offence completely dried up and he was no longer confident with the puck.

Flames could have have an easy 6-8 extra points that season if they hadn't played down to a few of their weaker. If memory serves correct, they had so-so records against WPG, TOR, and QUE that season.

I hadn't remember this but roster size unlimited back then? flames with 5 in the pressbox- Hrdina had been tearing up the league when he arrives but now finds himself along with Lanny as healthy scratches- top 2 lines here are how they settle in going forward. Ranheim-Fleury- Mark Hunter, not a bad 4th line eh?

bobbylouie

I was starting to wonder about the roster sizes myself with so many teams carrying extra players and seemingly recalling and demoting them at will. To be honest, I don't have a true recollection of what the rules were, but I have this vague notion that the roster limit was 24 players (excluding injuries) and you had a 48-hour window to reduce the roster if you went over the number.

That would fit the Flames' scenario here where they recall Fleury to get to 25 and then demote Churla to return to 24, but it's equally likely that I'm hallucinating after 6 weeks in quarantine and imagining the whole thing.

Also, in the two hours since I posted the game 39 report, two people have private messaged me inquiring about the Theoren Fleury rookie card shown.

That card DOES NOT exist, I created it myself just for this post because I liked the picture and it worked symmetrically side-by-side with the genuine Sakic card. Call off the search party, it's not some rare, hard to find treasure.

Wow. We had a bit of a goalie controversy brewing at this point of the season. Vernie seemed to be a bit inconsistent at this point of the year. His record was great, but the stats don't lie. He had quite a few games with 15-20 saves while allowing 3-5 goals. I have to think he gets on his hot streak over the next few weeks here, but it's funny to look back and see how well Wamsley was playing during this time.

I have to admit to a tiny bit of satisfaction seeing a major newspaper mis-identify the goalie in the photo caption in this next game. It makes me feel less guilty about my own occasional factual error or typo in these reports that I prepared late one night in my bunker three decades ago.

Also, isn't this the 2nd time that Berezan was displeased with his playing time? At least the 2nd time it was mentioned in the media.

Yep, and as we all know he eventually gets shipped at to Minny--I'm trying not to check when but I think it's pretty soon. Berezan was an interesting player. I think he'd thrive in today's NHL as a solid bottom six guy who could kill penalties, but in the late 80s that type of player wasn't valued nearly as much. Don't quote me on this, but isn't Berezan still pretty active with the Flames alumni? So I don't believe there is any bad blood. Also do not quote me on this either, but I think he actually got a SC ring from the team as well.

Watching the SCF game 6, if this was todays game, there would be constant fights as todays game there is no hitting without having to fight afterwards. I still have mine. 2 of each. I remember buying one of the Fleury ones for $1.50 off a guy who really wanted a bag of chips at long break in Junior high one day. No idea if a hockey card is even worth that much anymore. But it's a collectible, and has a story, so for me it's worth the money I spent.

Yep, agreed. Love seeing it from a cumulative perspective as well as it's always fun to see who slowed down or heated up. I know Nicholls had a great year in '89 but I didn't realize he was pretty much neck and neck with Gretz that year. I think when all said and done, The Great One had about 18 point on him. Don't know if you frequent hockey-reference at all, but there is actually a Cumulative Games feature on their Play-Index site--really cool feature once you get the gist of it.

I will also plug this thread as well. This is easily one of the threads of the year, and it's a shame that more folks aren't seeing it here. The materials being shared here are some that I didn't even realize existed anymore. From an archival perspective, IMO, hockey is severely lacking. Macoun's dizzy spells suffered in Montreal officially called a concussion (not an highly diagnosed condition back then)

Mention of Carey Wilson's hot streak- I can attest to this- I grabbed him in the last round of a hockey pool that year (and Sandstrom was my 2nd last pick) once Wilson was traded from Hartford to New York those 2 guys were put on the same line and were very productive- helped win me some $$

eesh I forgot how far off the 500 pace Lanny was at this point- he did kick it into gear to end his career

and yes of course while its nice the Flames had some added players, no surprise old Slats isn't going to be too generous. why add the reigning ROY Nieuwendyk- on pace for another big season on the league's top team when you've got Jimmy Carson and an injured Denis Savard to look after

I don't remember that particular story about Probert and was surprised to see Yzerman's comments. They definitely hurt Probert's reputation (even though they're telling the truth) but it isn't anything you would ever hear from another player these days.

Yeah, way different PR situation now a days with teams tightly run on what gets said and by who. Teams now shield problem players from public criticism from within as much as possible to avoid lowering trade value.

Back then it was just "Yeah, so this guy sucks and is hard to be on a team with so we're going to try to trade him", lol.

Cheveldae lookin' like Chris Osgood in that video! I always sort of lump Chev and Bob Essensa together as two goalies who came up around the same time and had pretty good runs only to be traded for one another and then really fall off the map. They might be two really good examples of the last of that 80s style goalie to come up only to get fully exposed in the Brodeur/Hasek mid 90s era.

Also, Probert, Oates and Klima to Edmonton for Jimmy Carson! Wow. That would have been an amazing deal for the Oil.

its pretty interesting because Carson was eventually dealt to Detroit for Klima and the 'other ' Adam (Graves) as well as Murphy....and Oates too was dealt by Detroit that offeseason in a dud deal for Federko

and the guy who seemed to be at the center of it all- Probert- didn' t he stay in Detroit for another 3 or 4 years?

I mean I understand that there is some truth to what was being written- given that Lanny' s last year was painful at times, but the line about Lanny having to pay for the cup with his dignity maybe didn't quite come to pass , what with him both scoring his 500th and scoring on the fateful May night at the forum :D

and does this sound familiar...."for the 7th straight time the Flames surrendered the first goal..."

Awesome shot if Patter in that prior game against Vancouver. I'm sure he'd love to see that now! I didn't know this previously, but after watching the '89 Game 6 YT video featuring Patter; and also the Game 6 Sportsnet video with Ron Mclean, Gretz, and Lanny; that Patter's stick was an absolute tree trunk and weighed a ton. Sounds like the boys chirped him a lot for it back then, and still do!

A while back, a fellow CP'er informed me that he had several full game videos
of the 1988-89 season. I recently received them and on this Friday morning
have likely gotten in way over my head trying to edit them into a
presentable 10 minute or so package.

There's about a hundred ways (that I've thought of so far) that this
could go spectacularly wrong, but sometime in the next few hours I
will try to upload the first game I am working on, which was
game 46 from Tuesday, January 17, the 7-1 win over Detroit.

This oughta be interesting.

p.s. The person who sent me the videos didn't say they wanted to be

BRAVO! This thread keeps getting better and better. I would love to see those full game vids. Trying to see if I have anything at my house that I could contribute. It's too bad because I've got the entire volume of Hockey News for the 88-89 season at my parents house, that would be cool to somehow contribute.

So, the All-Star game was on a Tuesday!

I had forgotten about that. I now remember a couple of times as a kid watching the all-star game and it was indeed a school night. I recall one particular game in the mid 80s being sick and staying home from school but watching the all-star game that night all bundled up.

There was a game. I don't remember the year but it was against Pittsburgh and I'm certain the goalie was Wendell Young. However in a game against the Flames, presumably Young came out to the faceoff dot to play a dumped puck and as he pulled it back to wind up for a long lead pass he lost the puck and it went in the net.

Does anybody remember that?

These are my 4 take-aways after assembling the latest clips:

1. The Ron Duguay incident in the opening minute was frightening, especially in slow-motion, reminiscent of the Bill Masterton tragedy 21 years earlier,

2. Theoren Fleury’s goal was pretty spectacular, showing an incredible amount of finesse and touch

3. Tom Laidlaw looks like he got voted off the island again, twice

and most importantly.....

4. For a big-time, established TV personality with a gazillion dollars and promoting a new show, Pat Sajak sure had pretty shi**y seats

My god--BL, you must be sitting on a historic Flames gold mine. For instance, if I just randomly asked, "Does anyone remember that game in '94 when Andrei Trefilov came out of nowhere and stopped 50ish shots at MSG? Yeah, that was cool but do we know who the dressed backup was for the Flames that night? And, damn, anyone remember who the linesmen were for that game?" I assume you would just go to your archive and pull that game report?

It's when people say stuff like, "does anybody remember the game that I went to when I was a kid and Terry Sawchuk
waved to the crowd and I spilled mustard on my shirt?" That's when it gets tricky.

Another lost point revealed, this time for Killer. BL, any chance you have the game footage for this one? Would love to see the play in question. Surprised this was never fixed as the box score even had an assist to Gilmour on that Patterson goal.

Things like this make you wonder how many lost points there have been over the years. I specifically think to the '89 season and Mario finishing with 199 points. I'm sure at some point during the year he was probably robbed of a point that would have given him a nice even 200.

On a separate note, every time Wamsley plays I keep thinking we'll see him in his new mask. Or am I a year off? I feel like in every image I've seen of Gump playing for CGY he's always been in the Flames colored mask--but per this thread, every game he's played in so far, he's still wearing the white mask.

ECFF,

I’m going to drift into dangerous territory here ---- relying on my memory from 31 years ago rather than anything fact-based or backed up by a video clip. Although I wrote “Gilmour clearly pounced on” and it looked that way in real time to the point where they gave an assist in the arena and I followed up with “a clerical assist might have cost him”.......there’s something way in the deep recesses telling me that either Gilmour admitted he never touched the puck after the game (he rode Ellett off the puck and Patterson picked it up and shot it on his own) or we just noticed it when we checked afterwards out of curiosity (and the scorer did the same thing).

Very much like the video in post #167 of this thread where it appears Hawerchuk scored and the announcer goes on about it, but in reality Andrew McBain shoots the puck.

I just checked and the collector here who has over 50 full-game video of this season unfortunately doesn’t have this game on his list, so we might never find out. If I had to guess though, Gilmour probably didn’t get cheated on this one, not to say that never happened in other cases, especially in the pre-10 camera angles of every play days.

Ha, well it looks like I was a game off as it seems that Wamsley debuted his 'new' mask for this tilt against Boston.

Didn't realize there were Mark Hunter rumors floating around that season. I can't say I'm surprised as he never really seemed to fit in the CGY lineup. Again, I think he would have flourished in the Patterson role on that line with Killer and Mullen. Any ideas on what a possible return from Boston would have been? Probably a 1 for 1 swap. Janney? Glen Wesley? Randy Burridge?

Bruce Shoebottom is up there for one of the all-time great names in NHL history. If I remember he was big, mean and tough as nails but lacked any real hockey skill (ah, such is life in the NHL during the late 80s and early 90s).

I would agree. The entire board is a bit quieter than normal (understandably so). Regarding Guenette: he's always sort of been an enigma to me as he was the 3rd stringer on a stacked team. I know he got some official GP with CGY in '90 and '91, I didn't realize he actually was called up and 'dressed' in '89. I've also never seen him in that mask above either. Sort of looks like the one Vernie wore in 93 and 94.

From the game notes
1. Theoren Fleury has had his "you've made the team' moment- clearly a formality but worth noting

2. I really didn't remember how tight Lanny had left things 7 goals down with 18 games to go- he had to score at a 30+ pace to finish this out- pay attention James Neal!!!!!

3. Wow Flames 34-0-2 with the lead going into the 3rd. those kind of stats became commonplace in the 'dead puck' era..but I would think this was highly unusual in the 80s
