This was a huge win. Huge! They are at the point in the season where any losses may send them temporarily out of the playoffs and a losing streak could seal their fate. Really big to win a game that many may have pencilled in as a loss against a team that had only lost twice at home in regulation. Best part is that they outplayed the Bruins for a good portion of the game and the only goals the Bruins got were off Flames turnovers.

Who are these guys? Guess we’re just gonna decline all home games for the rest of the season. Backlund has been outstanding the last dozen games. Rittich looked dialed in, Johnny had some jump, Brodie was vintage 2014/15 Brodie, and I loved the new bottom pair. Hanifin-Andersson were also amazing in the defensive end.

SuperMatt18
02-25-2020, 07:57 PM
Backlund and Johnny appear to have figure out their game...

Monahan with a goal streak starting....

Mangiapane, Tkachuk, Lindholm continuing their strong play all year...

Defense has more depth than it has in a while...

Maybe this team could actually get hot going into the post-season for the first time in a long time, feel like going back to 05/06 this team is always slumping heading into the playoffs.

I think there is no question that Backlund's confidence was shot in the first two months of the season. I wonder if moving back to centre after having played on Monahan and Gaudreau's wing supercharged it after such an abysmal start.

But when Monahan's scoring and Backlund's a dominant two-way force on the second line, this team is still pretty damn good.

The thing is the Flames have been playing like that consistently on the road now for some time. If they could figure out how to play at the Saddledome this team would be a legitimate threat. They have a tonne of home games coming up; hopefully they work it out.

Very good game by most of the team. Solid D play for most of the night.

Only two downers for me were the PP (seriously, they apparently practiced that yesterday/today and it looked horrible other than the quick goal) and the two stinky giveaways by Lucic that both ended up in the net. Play smarter Lucic.

Gustafsson isn't Brodie, but that's fine. He's an entirely different player and brings a totally new dimension to the team. He's way more confident in the offensive zone and he's a tremendous passer.

Looking forward to watching him play over the next few weeks here. Hope he plays well enough to warrant a reasonable extension.

Shout out to the beveled dasher which made the puck come off a weird angle, throwing the Bruins off, and, Rask, who was shown to be waving at the ref about it, and never really got set for Backlund’s impending shot.

A necessary boost of confidence...now get two of the next three and will be in business.

She needs to go. All she has is her talking points and not much else.

I love Cassie for what she did for women's hockey, and she has had good games, but I agree she is getting worse, not better. She gets names wrong, gets confused. She started talking about the Backlund-Marchand thing, did well referencing the game before when they said how Tkachuk was kind of the same player, then they went to the highlights and said Tkachuk was ready to go, and that it would be a good fight. The whole beef was Backlund, it was Backlund who was ready to go.

Compete level was at a totally different level, great effort tonight from almost everyone.

Agree completely and best 60 minute effort all year. I felt Forbort skated really well for his size, did carry the puck out a couple of times and Gustaffson even with the offense was a much better defender than advertised.

Regardless dare we think this group could actually figure it all out at this time of the year? The right time of year to get going? That was Rittich's best and most emotional game in a while as well.

I thought Stone had a great game by his standards, good job stepping up on a little bit short notice.

Gaudreau adds another 1 or 2 breakaway misses, surely his luck has to turn around soon. I’d love to see a highlight vid of all his open looks so far this year.

Nice game, keep it rolling!

Impressive win. Flames didn't give up too much. Rittich was there the few times that they did. Bruins capitalized on a couple of mistakes, but that's a solid defensive effort.

Hopefully the new additions settle in more. It isn't like Gus has had much (if any) time practicing the PP. Andersson should have been out for PP2, or even Brodie, as I just don't think Hanifin is getting the job done there.

Most of all... the Flames played a full 60 minutes. Didn't take their foot off the gas. Even when the Bruins were pressing and got the Flames hemmed-in the defensive zone, they kept their composure. This is how a winning team plays.

Great win and a huge two points to keep pace. It seemed that everyone contributed tonight, like Dube drawing that penalty, Stone breaking up some dangerous plays and Mangiapane winning countless puck races.

Gustafsson obviously had a strong debut leading them in icetime and registering an assist and a few shots. He has size and skill and an offensive mentality. I thought he competed hard defensively as well.

Forbort reminds me of Sarich and I think we will grow to appreciate him in games against St. Louis, Winnipeg and Vegas who have big forwards that can score. He made a few good blocks tonight and his puck skills and passing are better than expected.

Tons of credit to Monahan and Backlund for finishing chances and getting offensive pressure when Boston needed a push.

Yet another high scoring game. Glad to see the offence rolling and hoping for another boost from a rested Gio.

I had to watch that one on delay, but that was one of the most complete and impressive wins by the Flames all season. It gives one hope, and hope is dangerous.

Thoughts on the new additions:

Gustafsson already looks great on the first PP with minimal practice time. I'm looking forward to how he can inject some life into the PP. One goal tonight for that group. His defensive woes are overstated, but I did see a rush or two that he was ill prepared for. Best to shelter him down the lineup and use him as a PP specialist.

Forbort with a steady, workmanlike game. Nothing fancy, but contributed in his own end positively. Not bad considering he had to take a red eye just to play tonight. Pretty good mobility for a big guy, which is nice to see.

This is the kind of win that can give this group confidence, which is the one thing they've been lacking all year. I suspect you see them go on a bit of a run over the next 10 games, especially if they get Gio back.

I didn't see the game so I can't comment, but didn't Burke say that Mangiapane's skating was below average and even called it horrible? I certainly haven't noticed that at all and have seen him win a ton of those puck races as well.

Ugly game that was completely stuck in the mud. Unbelievably impressed the team pulled out of the fire there. New guys looked good. Top 6 executed big time. BSD was solid.

Only twice have the Bruins lost at home this season prior to this game. Strong strong effort. Hopefully these guys can go into Nashville and pull off an even bigger win.

One little play I thought was pretty neat was before one of the faceoffs in the 3rd in the Flames' zone you could see the puck that was deflected out the play before was caught in the netting in the corner......a Bruins fan stepped on the boards and eventually got it out, got down and gave it to a young Flames fan, and the crowd gave him a big ovation. Thought that was pretty cool.

I just watched the goals from the Boston broadcast and the 4-2 Backlund goal was immediately shown to be a legal bounce off the dasher and not a Flames glove on the bench. It took SNET how many minutes and about 5 replays to come to a conclusion?

Here's a pet theory on why Backlund is scoring more:

Effort away from the puck. Not his, but his linemates.

I think Backlund was getting absolutely chewed up playing with Gaudreau and Monahan, the heavy lifting on that line is like Thor's hammer. Tonight, Tkachuk and mangiapane were just so good and playing so hard for each other. Tkachuk was especially noticeable in my opinion for staying low on the breakout, allowing Backlund to actually be the high man in exchanges where he was already in that position. Mangiapane is just so good at hustling out there. Effort all the time. Effort is such a huge commodity, it's so much of what made Hathaway a good player. Tkachuk has it too. So does Backlund. Hustle hustle hustle.

Anyway, Backlund's goals and increased offense has basically come in one form.

I just went back through and watched backlund's recent series of goals back.

Against Anaheim on feb 13, the first goal off the nice assist is created by a Tkachuk hustle/hit-created turnover to mangiapane, and Backlund is able to skate down from the easy high defensive position and score into an open net.

His second goal that game is an unbelievable individual effort on the penalty kill. Where he picks off a pass and goes coast to coast.

The first goal he scores in boston is because Tkachuk is hard in on a forecheck and gets to a puck early and makes a play. Mangiapane is right there with him for support, the puck moves around, backlund shoots into an open net off a rebound.

His second goal in that game, Tkachuk is AGAIN in first on a puck, moving it to reider for a 2 on 1 with backlund firing it into the open net.

Tonight, it's another great individual effort and am empty net goal.

I think playing with Monahan and Gaudreau, it's basically impossible for him to play his game. Gaudreau is relying on bang bang plays at odd angles with no speed to their game at all. Gaudreau and Monahan, but especially Gaudreau really overhandle the puck. This means turnovers happen all over the place, there's no rhyme or reason to how things are going to go, it's all seat of the pants.

Tkachuk - Backlund - Mangiapane play a 3rd man high triangle game, and Backlund has to do very little of the dirty work on his line compared to doing ALL of the dirty work with Gaudreau and Monahan. Tkachuk and Mangiapane are constantly digging pucks out. Going into 50-50 or 40-60 scenarios and coming out with the puck.

I'm not saying he needs an open net to score, I'm saying he needs to play with guys who have the same hustle he does so when the puck finds him, the net is open. If that's not available, he needs the freedom to push the puck up the ice and play for himself without worrying about where his linemates are.

With Tkachuk, Backlund gets to play worry free positional hockey, and when the opportunity is there, he gets to go for it. It's basically the exact opposite of playing with Gaudreau and Monahan. At no point tonight was he neutered because his linemates were relying on him to get them the puck out of difficult spots.

I remember that being so tantalizing about Backlund when he was in junior when he was drafted. Driving the net hard, great individual efforts. His game is all about giving him the green light to go for it when it's there. If he has to babysit, well, he's not going to be effective.

It takes one unexpected pass or move to set up ice/time/space to get a quality shot on.

Gustafsson has been known for doing that on the man advantage apparently.

Gio and Brodie haven't fooled defenders from the point at all this year, so I suspect it'll be a huge help to the forwards on his unit.

He also did something along the lines on a zone entry, faked hard a dump in and a quick pass over to the wing for a good scoring chance. He’s going to open up time and space with those offensive instincts.

Those are the consecutive 20 goal years. Stamkos missed 20 the next year (he only played 17 games and got 9 goals). Then he went on to score over 20 every year since. If you ignore that year he’s scored 20 every year. 11 years.

- complete game for the Flames

To highlight how bad SNET is at almost everything...

I just watched the goals from the Boston broadcast and the 4-2 Backlund goal was immediately shown to be a legal bounce off the dasher and not a Flames glove on the bench. It took SNET how many minutes and about 5 replays to come to a conclusion?

The first replay Boston showed was perfect.
I wonder what kind of screen they are watching it on in the booth. I've never badmouthed Cassie on here like many do because I'm thankful to not have to listen to Ferraro, Millen, or the brilliant mind of Glenn Healy straining to comprehend the English language like I did a few years ago. But it was a tad annoying this time to hear repeatedly: "It does hit a Flames player" when the first replay showed it was not remotely close to hitting a glove on the Flames' bench.

Just finished watching the game... awesome! Gustafsson and Forbort looked pretty good for their first games.

Like most games, your best players win you games. Johnny, Mony, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund, Rittich were better than Pasta, Bergeron, Marchand, McAvoy, Rask.

Hopefully this continues and we see continued balanced scoring.

Yeah I don't put the blame on Cassie or Rick Ball for that. The guys in charge of choosing the replays picked the worst angles to show what happened definitively. So instead of describing the great effort for the goal, Rick and Cassie have to spend several minutes discussing whether the Flames got away with something.

This is a big thing that many people are ignoring when it comes to our new acquisitions, both Gus and Bort have played on top pairings before. albeit on poor teams, but that experience (and physical/mental conditioning) is invaluable and giving them lesser competition will only help them look better. Plus, because of their previous experience, they will be able to take on extra minutes if a defenseman gets tossed or injured.

Edit: (I included the Buffalo game, since that was his first game as HC, but an argument can be made that he wouldn't have had the chance to adjust the systems until two days later when it was official. Unless, of course, it was already "internally official" and was thus allowed to make changes to the systems. Regardless, he was at least allowed to make lineup and in-game decisions - which should be enough to be able to include the Buffalo game.)

I feel like people aren't allowed to criticize her because of the threat of being labeled a misogynist.

- She has a monotone delivery.
- She takes a long time to say what she's trying to say.
- She mansplains replays.

That's a pretty serious accusation based on nothing.
I don't like her because I don't think she's good at her job.
I can tell you exactly why:
- She gets stuff wrong
- She doesn't break down plays to tell me something I don't already know. Meaning - she just repeats what is showing on the screen, instead of offering new information or deeper understanding
- She gets stuck on a narrative that she thinks is the story of the game, often what she has tee'd up in the pre-game, regardless of if it actually is a story of the game or not.

There are valid reasons not to enjoy her as a commentator and saying that that it is misogyny is offensive and frankly is as bad as misogyny itself.

I have worked with female broadcasters, including in sports. I love that women are getting more opportunities, as they should.

But that doesn't mean they are above criticism when they aren't doing a good job.

GranteedEV

Examples?

I've definitely seen people here that blame "political correctness" as the reason Campbell is on the air. i.e. that she's only on the air because she is a woman and they are filling a gender equality quota.

Personally I think Campbell is a downgrade on Hrudy, but he sets the bar pretty high so being worse than him isn't being worse than average. I don't mind Cassie although she definitely ruined the call on Backlund's goal last night considering I never thought the puck hit a Flames player on the bench (just based on its trajectory you could tell it bounced off the dasher). Great goal, bad call. I'd like to see the Bruins' call.

I would call Cassie Campbell an average color commentator. If we have criticisms, which Jiri did outline, I think we should forward those to her constructively as I'm sure she would like to improve.

AC

I agree that Kelly and Cassie are pretty similar.

They both have a similar level of insight being former players but generally don't add a lot. However I think Cassie gets criticized more because of her monotone delivery, which is unfortunate because it's not something she can really control.

Though I think Rick and Kelly have great chemistry, which makes them a good pair. You can hear the difference when Jason York or other replacements step in as well as they don't have the same jokey and fun chemistry Rick and Kelly have.

If Kylington isn't going to play (which I don't entirely agree with), could the Flames not just have sent him down for more playing time and then kept Davidson around as NHL depth?

DeBrusk is the best overall color guy in Alberta because he's likeable and provides some insight. Remenda also provides decent insight gut his homerism is so off the charts that he can't be taken seriously. Cassie and Kelly both offer little insight. The odd time Hrudey picks up on something but it's sandwiched between homerism and bad humor.

I feel like people aren't allowed to criticize her because of the threat of being labeled a misogynist.

- She has a monotone delivery.
- She takes a long time to say what she's trying to say.
- She mansplains replays.

None of these things have anything to do with her being a woman. There are a lot of guys that do these same things too, and I also (coincidence?) don't like them too.

yup. "No question about it."

I will say that Hrudey is almost same level bad as she is and sometimes he's worse. He doesn't face nearly the amount of criticism despite the fact he's been doing this much longer than Campbell and still isn't good at it.

Why I don't complain about Hrudey:

- His voice isn't monotone.
- He often adds insight on a play from the point of view of the goalie, which may be basic info to some people, but is interesting to me.
- He and Ball have outstanding chemistry. I get the sense these guys are good friends who hang out together, and the way they talk to each other is very entertaining.

There are two ways to be a good colour-commentator:

- Be insightful
- Be entertaining

I feel that Hrudey is almost always entertaining, and his goalie point of view allows him more flexibility with the "be insightful" part.

I don't love Cassie's work but she's a hell of a lot better to listen too than Galley, Millen, York, Remenda or Garrett. For a colour commentator, she's really only behind Hrudey and DeBrusk

How many hockey color guys (or ladies) tell you something you don’t already know? It is a lost art. Compare many of them to guys like Romo in the NFL who are incredible.

You know who rarely offers insight into tactics and the like? Loubardias. I used to like him a lot but I feel like he’s become a caricature who can’t stop talking about putting in the work and structure.

I really don’t mind Cassie because I just don’t think she’s much different than the rest.
I agree with this, and it is the reason why I just don't even notice much of the colour on broadcasts anymore (unless I am laughing at how hilariously one-sided Drew Remenda is on Oilers telecasts). But this also begs the question:

Who's good at it?

I am not the one to answer that question since—like I said—I don't pay much attention at the best of times. I think Craig Simpson is probably fairly good, and I have always liked Gary Galley. Is there anyone else?

I will say that while I don't think there are any especially good colour commentators in hockey, Cassie Campbell is in the end not much worse than almost everyone.
