If the Flames can find a way to handle his turnovers (something every Blackhawks fans I've heard from has mentioned) and his defensive liabilities, then he seems like a good pick up. Especially if the Flames look to extend him.

Gustafsson has been really bad this year, after a very good offensive year last year.

The Hawks have the worse PP in the league this year, and Gustafsson has been moved off the first unit.

His defensive play has always been really bad.

He can likely help Calgary offensive play, but he's not a keeper and they won't be re-signing him to an extension.

I assume a third that gets upgraded to a second if unlikely things happen.

This is the same overhyped crap people say about Barrie. He has had a down year but his defence is passable. Saying he has zero defensive ability is ridiculous.

Chicago has some of the worse defensemen in the league, as they lead the league in giving up high danger scoring chances.

Gustafsson has been a large part of that, as he's been moved down their pairings as the season went on.

They weren't particularly enamoured with him when he scored so well last year.

Comparing him to Barrie is an insult to Barrie.

Gustafsson has a reasonable chance to be back playing in Sweden in a few years.

Fine "passable". For a second division team, sure. For a team in the playoffs fighting good teams? He'll be badly exposed.

But as long as he's used on the 3rd pairing and on the PP, it's a good depth move, and obtained cheaply enough.

There is a reason why teams were paying plenty for d-man, and few wanted him.

Pretty predictable deadline moves. Give up some of your future success for a small improvement on your chances to make the playoffs this year. Team is not a Stanley cup contender so it made no sense to to give up big assets. Potentially slightly hurts the franchise in the future but could help them get into the playoffs this year.

my guess is that the gustafsson moves kyboshes the barrie move. barrie has exposed himself as being awful and might be injured. I really don't see the flames adding both gustafsson and barrie. Gustafsson does the same thing for cheaper.

You are not going to get a traditional top-pairing defenseman that will give you a shutdown role or the type of player you want playing 25 minutes a night against the other team’s best forwards. He will, however, give you a lot of offense from the blue line, especially if you put him into situations where he can focus on the offensive side of the puck. He will probably never duplicate the 17-goal, 60-point performance from the 2018-19 season, but he is still a productive player that should be good for around 10 goals and 30-35 points over an 82-game season with good possession numbers from the blue line. Not a superstar by any means, but a darn good second-pairing option for a playoff team.

This goes along with Kent Wilson's post about him having metrics similar to Hanifin.

You're right. That was a stupid idea by me. I just really didn't want Kylington to sit, but I think the downside of having Kylington - Gustafsson would probably be so bad that it would be better to just have Kylington eat popcorn.
