Have to think it's a 2nd Rd. Or maybe a conditional 1st?
Wow, I was way off. I guess the huge premiums were all paid for D last week.

I suppose that posters will say that it’s basically a harmless deal for Edmonton to make, and Green will provide depth. But what it does is take them out of the running for much else.

Green either waived or didn’t include Edmonton on his list. I guess because he’s from Calgary and its close to home that could be a factor.

So, the Oilers added $2.7 million in salary. Given they have 20 games left, that means about $655,000 to their cap in pro-rated dollars which is the actual amount.

Hes also only doing it for a very short period of time.

Furthermore, the Oilers have a track record of throwing big money at players at arcs in their career where nobody sane would throw money at them.

See: Khabibulin, Kostinem, etc, ad nauseum.

Is it though?.. I mean who would block an exit from a 31st placed team in a rebuild..

Unless of course it's to the Oilers, so yeah I guess the shock and awe of that is worth mentioning. You're right.

Watch Oiler fans wet themselves over this fact as if it mean the tide has turned for the notion that the organizational reputation is no longer in the toilet (Hint:it still is).

He’s got as little in 7 weeks there and Katz will set him up in one of those unsold condos in the ice district he couldn’t schlep to some sucker investors, for that time.

I see why the no goods would do this, can somebody explain why the wings would do this? They are in a rebuild, but to give up an asset, retain salary and just get a draft pick and a guy who isn’t in the NHL... what???

Yzerman probably has a really good relationship with Ken Holland. I'm sure the cost would have been more for anybody else.

Uh, worst team in the league trading a UFA for a draft pick, pretty standard stuff

Its an average deal at best...Mike Green is not a very good player anymore

The Wings got a conditional 4th for a player who wasn't going to re-sign. The salary and player back just make the cap work for Edmonton. Seems like a good move to me unless there were better offers out there and this was a favour to Holland.

Decent depth pick up for the Oilers but of course their fans will hype Green up as a star offensive D man whose playoff experience will put them over the top.

It might have been the only offer on Green. Better to get something than nothing.

Not sure what Green has left in the tank as only the scouts have bothered to watch the Red Wings this year. His stat line isn't exactly encouraging.

It will be interesting to see what Green can do on a team that still has playoff hopes. Maybe he'll have a dead cat bounce.

Most teams who are buyers are so tight against the cap that they would have needed to retain a large percentage of his salary just to move him at all. That makes the salary retention a moot point.

Beyond that, it's an asset that would expire in about 6 weeks, so they got what they could for him.

Mike Green? Their PP is already doing well. You'd think they'd want someone dependable defensively and maybe a physical presence on that blueline.

I guess not.

Green is atrocious without the puck so the Oilers picked up a pp specialist who can't play even strength.

Sounds like the Oilers know there team is a tire fire 5 on 5 and need to make sure they score on the PP if they have a chance. If their PP dries up they are toast.

Just looked at Green’s numbers. I don’t think he’s been a legitimate offensive threat since 2010.

For a guy who is supposedly all offence his numbers aren’t that great, but honestly at that price it’s not a terrible pickup for Edmonton.

I believe he has a home in Calgary, granted it was the off season but I had a friend do some electrical work at his house here. This was 3-4 years ago however.

Kinda of an interesting pickup for their first place run. I would have thought the Holland would have gone for a more defensive dman. Not sure their powerplay can even get better, I would be worried about doing anything to that powerplay.

Klefbom is out for a bit still.

I like him as a mentor to Bear to help run a PP.

I’m wondering if this doesn’t open up a Lagesson or Russell or a dman trade.

What kind of a return do you forecast for Lagesson?

I used to be a massive Green fanboy back in his Caps days. Good ol' Calgary boy I got to meet a couple times when he was in town, as my buddy is friends with him. I guarantee he's gonna get ribbed hard by his friends and family now that he's an Oiler.

As for the hockey side I think it's a decent trade for the Oilers. His +/- is nasty for sure though. But the Oilers need a D who can move the puck up the ice quickly, and he can still do that.

Haven't seen the Oilers be buyers in a while, so I'm sure it was also done to reinvigorate the fanbase and Katz.

Russell on LTIR potentially opens some cap space depends how long he’s out for.
