Ooooookaaayyyyy.......???

I have no idea how this guy helps the Leafs either in the now OR in the future. Seen him play a good number of times with the Panthers. Not even remotely impressed.

You never know with some guys, they come over and find a good fit. I know he didn't pass your eye test but Malgin is still a RHS who can score the odd goal... but at 5'9", boy he's not a big guy.

Is Mason Marchment related to former NHL psychopath Bryan Marchment

He's huge and that's about it. That's all I gleaned from watching him during his callup.

Edit -- just checked, nevermind. Looks like he's Bryan's kid.

Yep. I will give him this though. Seems like he can really scoot.

Yes he is his son.

Fun fact Mason attended Flames development camp and came to their main training camp in 2015.

He played in Zurich with Auston Mathews, Malgin was an 18 year old, Mathews 17.
Mathews had 46 points in 36 games. Malgin had 17 in 38.

This thread already has more posts than I thought it would.

Trade thirst is real.

I love Toronto Sports Network. They have been talking about this deal as if Stamkos just got acquired.

Panthers GM Dale Tallon tells me the agent for Denis Malgin had asked him several times for a trade out of Florida. He got his wish.

Leafs acquire another right shot winger, are they prepping for a trade of Kapanen who is already stuck behind Marner and Nylander?

They're down a winger and traded for a minor league depth guy.

Kapanen isn't going anywhere.

I see Kapanen as overkill. They need a defenseman or two.

When you have two point per game right wingers, there's really no need for Kapanen.

The mix just isn't right in Toronto, but they can just keep hoarding scoring forwards and be top heavy all they want.

It would be disastrous for Dubas if they miss the playoffs.

Unless they move Kapanen for a player they like more.

Yeah thats all fair. At this time of year I probably shouldn't be throwing out absolutes like "he isn't going anywhere".

Kapanen for a D feels more like an off-season trade to me

They won’t survive the first round without a D upgrade. They’re getting picked apart. They have no problems scoring.

Malgin is the definition of a fringe NHLer. Too small to check anyone effectively. Not a consistent enough scorer to stick in the top 9. Defensive liability at times.

He's got skills, but he isn't a complete player, hence why he was in and out of the lineup this year. Plus the Panther's forward depth is pretty good. That's not going to change in Toronto.

I know nothing about Marchment, so I wonder if this was just a move to accommodate the player in the spirit of goodwill rather than a solid hockey trade.

Kind of odd that two teams in a battle for a playoff spot traded with each other.

They might not even make the playoffs.

They might not even make the playoffs.

Unless Buffalo goes on some kind of run these last 20 games (not likely, it is the Sabres) one of them will get in.

This trade seems fine. Marchment was unimpressive in his few games up this season. Two fresh starts is all this is for two so-so prospects.
