The Washington Capitals have acquired defenseman Brenden Dillon from the San Jose Sharks for a 2020 second round pick (originally acquired from Colorado) and a conditional 2021 third round pick, senior vice president and general manager Brian MacLellan announced today. In addition, San Jose has agreed to retain 50 percent of Dillon's salary and cap hit.

More details on the Dillon trade: In the event Washington wins the Stanley Cup then the Caps will give San Jose Arizona's 3rd RD pick in 2020 instead of Washington 3rd RD pick in 2021

Yearly Caps defensive add, not surprised. Kempny, Jensen, and now Dillon.

Please get healthy Hamonic

He's out for some time. Ward commented that he's further out than Giordano is.

...I wonder if we aren't going to see Tree do nothing yet again.

Hamonic not being tradeable is crushing.

Meanwhile Treliving sits, unsure whether or not to put Gio & Hamonic on LTIR

They'll probably be back with a few weeks left in the season. Either they are fighting for their playoff lives, in which case the Flames stood pat too long or they are in, in which case those players can take a little longer to get healthy.

Eight years since the last major midseason acquisition! Eight!

Market is less potential teams for Flames UFA D-men. If that's what Tre is wanting to do. Tough spot to be in.

Tre is waiting for the draft to make his next major move.

Teams are really getting ahead of the curve this year, not as much posturing as most years.

Wonder if this deal makes Nick Jensen expendable. He has term and I could see Treliving having interest to shore up the right side

YES! Another player the Flames may target gone. Flames would have had to pay a steeper price to get this player from a rival team.

No problem with missing out on this one. Either trade for someone with term or stand pat.

(I actually think we should sell some depth guys for some picks, but whatever)

Well stop wondering. One of the best teams isn't moving out defensive depth before the playoffs. This isn't off-season jostling of rosters, this is adding for a potentially long playoff run.

I was looking forward to the trade deadline and took the day off. I guess another year of minimal trades on the actual day. But hey, a day full of hockey talk ain’t so bad

Hamonic not being tradeable is crushing.

Yeah, that's why when there are deals out there to be done, it's worth doing them.

Going into a final year of a deal with a guy who plays like Hamonic does, who tells you in October he's not negotiating an extension in the middle of the year...

Deal should've been done by January.

I think Treliving actually wants to re-sign him (unfortunately) which is probably why he wasn't moved earlier. Sounds like Brodie is the defenseman he was shopping around prior to the injuries.

Would be such a Flames move. Try to sign the guy who publicly said he doesn’t want to discuss signing, let the guy walk who actually helps the team. Screw getting anything for either of them, the long term health of the franchise has to take a back seat to the fact that a club going nowhere fast is running into a rough few weeks for injuries.

This organization is being utterly mismanaged based on their thirst for playoff revenue.

Dillon was super emotional last night - I feel for him. Being traded must totally throw your life into chaos...it's part of the business but it is a difficult part of the business.

So he is going to do something?

So this would have made Hamonic worth two seconds?

Good deal for the Sharks. Caps get fleeced.

Dillon is no good. Barely at the minimum level of a 5th or 6th NHL calibre D-man. Very much a scrub.

Friedman on the 31 Thoughts podcast says Caps might not be done in the defensive market. Says they might have interest in reacquiring Mike Green and, as I kind of figured they might, trading Nick Jensen

“I’ve heard that Jensen might be available,” Friedman says on the “31 Thoughts” podcast. “It just hasn’t worked there as much as they’d like. You just added Dillon, and your top four is gonna be Carlson, Orlov, Kempny, and Dillon. I think Washington might have some interest in [Mike] Green. Jensen’s extended for four years at two and a half million. That’s a big number. I just don’t think it’s worked there as much as everybody hoped, so I could see Jensen potentially being moved.”

I am willing to excuse management for attempting to do what every NHL franchise is trying to do, make the playoffs.

Especially when they are currently in a playoff spot.

That's a very prudent move for the Capitals given the position they are in. While he doesn't have the sexy offensive numbers, Dillon is exceptionally good in his own zone, is a complete pain in the ass to play against, and is terrific in the room. He leaves it all on the ice and good for him getting a shot with that Capitals team.
