Kind of sucks for Dallas, they used top 10 pick on him, Lindy Ruff did not help either, wonder if the Flames take a look at him, if the cost is low,

Signing Johnny is top priority, and I don't think the Flames have cap space to add Nichishkin this year. However, if something unusual happened and the Flames could shed salary through a trade or buyout then I would love to see them throw a trade proposal out there. I don't think it would take much to be honest. Maybe a decent prospect and a 3rd? Say Klimchuk and a 2nd or Poirier and a 3rd? I wouldn't pay more than that as the risk of Nichushkin heading back to Russia remains high.

Having Monahan, Bennett, Gaudreau, Tkachuk, and Nichushkin in the top 6 would be insane.

Wasn't this the exact reason he dropped in the draft. The Russian factor is real

Unfortunately if true, this will continue to give teams pause when drafting Russian players.

Yes - he was ranked at 5. The thing is, it wouldn't have been an issue if he'd performed well at the NHL level and been in a position where Dallas was going to pay him an equivalent amount to a KHL team.

Aivis Kalnins: Source saying that Valeri Nichushkin asked Traktor of the KHL for $1.5 million

Well, seems like it's a silly story first of all. How can a team that doesn't own his rights negotiate a deal unless the team that owns his right said okay. Which wasn't mentioned. I think this is one heck of a sloppy negotiating tactic.

And 1.5 million? I'm sure Dallas would have no issue giving him that even afer a medicore season.

$1.5 million may not seem like a lot but keep in mind that KHL salary is essentially tax free.

$1.5 million in the KHL is equivalent to roughly $3 million in NHL salary.

But this is par on course for an unsigned Russian player. Rumors that there is a KHL offer always appear. Gives the players some leverage with NHL teams whether true or not. For example, there are rumors that Kucherov has a significant KHL offer on the table.

Keep in mind that Texas doesn't have any state personal income tax either.

I believe there is a flat 13 percent income tax for all Russian citizens and 30 percent for non citizens.

Does the KHL pay the players in USD or Rubles? If they pay Rubles then a 1.5 million contract is worth about $163 USD.

On the bright side that buys a heck of a lot of potato soup and a top of the line Lada to cruise around town in. But keep in mind you can only cruise around town until 9 pm, that's when curfew kicks in, and don't forget that after practice you need to get to the smelting factory for your 12 hour shift on the line. Oh Russia you are a beautiful beast.

Oh? When did Russia-based teams start paying their players in US currency? And where do they find those dollars?

I am pretty sure he would still have to pay federal income tax, as he made the money in the US. When I was in Oklahoma my state tax was a fraction of the federal tax rate.

Yes, and the KHL has exemptions. Most KHL contracts are tax-free.

And before you ask why: Because its a lawless land.

KHL player contracts are disclosed as net income in most situations.
The club pays the income tax due. That is my understanding.
Most top level Europeans leagues do the same with imports only.

Agreed. He would immediately become one the most promising RWers in the system and the only one with top 6 potential.

Even if he only puts up 40points, a 6'4", 22yr old winger is what the Flames organization desperately needs

The contracts are in US dollars but they may pay them in the Canadian equivalency, at least part of the money since they wouldn't want to be paying banks their transfer fees, or is there a way around that?

Still pay taxes in all the other jurisdictions you play in and federal taxes. So not tax free but better than other places.

I guess that Dallas wanted to pay him like a 30 point player and the KHL wanted to pay him like a star. I wouldn't chalk this down to Russian flight risk. He put up about half as many points as Radulov.
