Time for a new thread?

I really enjoy the early parts of Europa and CL qualification. You get introduced to teams that you never hear from

Today Celtic play Lincoln Red Imps. Red Imps are the champions (for the 14th straight year) of the Gibraltar Premier Division, founded in 1976, and the 5000 seat stadium is on Winston Churchill Avenue. Going down the Gibraltar football wikipedia rabbit hole you find teams like F.C. Magpies (A.K.A Bruno's Magpies) and F.C. Hound Dogs.

Bruno's are the first club in Gibraltar to have a matchday programme and serve Beers and Burgers

There is also a team called Manchester 62 (which was previously called Manchester United)

A few hilarious facts I've found when google searching the Red Imps:

-The goal scorer is a policeman
-Another player was driving a taxi hours before the game
-The coach got the job by winning a contest
-Their average crowd is 42
-They cannot practise on Tuesdays because their field is used by a metal detecting club

Borussia Dortmund continue their crazy squad overhaul by bringing Mario Götze back from Bayern Munich. So far:

out: Mats Hummels, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Ilkay Gündogan, Neven Subotic
in: Mario Götze, Ousmane Dembele, Raphael Guerreiro, Sebastian Rode, Marc Bartra, Emre Mor, Mikel Merino

Plus they are close to buying Andre Schürrle for some reason ... and they are still negotiating with Leverkusen for Ömer Toprak.

Damn...they are going to be a force to be reckoned with next season if they land Schurrle. Those are all really good signings but they still need goals and they likely arent going to come from Gotze.

I could see that too, but a consolidation of power in the German league might make it easier for them, its the CL where they might stumble.

devo22

I love most of their signings, but Schürrle is a big head scratcher. He has to be the most overrated player over the last few years ... clubs pay huge fees and he always disappoints, yet the next club pays even more money. Apparently he's going to cost Dortmund close to €35m, which is absolutely ridiculous.

Also I wouldn't expect too much of them next season. That's just a lot of turnover ... they've lost 3 of their best players and have brought in a lot of very young and raw players. Top 4 is pretty much a guarantee in Germany, but I wouldn't bet on them being the runner-up.

but it seems they are building now to compete with the next generation of Bayern and maybe push for the title starting in 2018, smart strategy

Germany international striker Mario Gomez is leaving Turkish club Besiktas due to the political instability the country is experiencing.

"It was a difficult decision that I had to think about a lot. please no, watching him at Bayern was painful enough :D

I actually think Wolfsburg would be a great fit for him, they need firepower. Bas Dost has been unhappy there for a while and they've already canned Bendtner (surprise surprise) ... unless they somehow keep Dost, that only leaves them with Real loanee Borja Majoral up front. Wages surely wouldn't be a problem either.

Bayern beat City 1-0 in Pep's return to the Allianz today. I love that his return match happened in a meaningless exhibition rather than a CL match.

I've also changed my tune on his time at Bayern. He made them the most dominant team in Bundesliga history and took them to the CL semi finals. That's pretty a pretty successful reign at any club

That depends on the standards. If you wan walk through the domestic league then obviously the standards for the CL are going to be higher.

They could have had the same run (or better) with me in charge. The CL was the whole point. ;)

Manchester United v Borussia Dortmund is starting in an hour, plus loads of other European top teams are in action in the coming days (Barcelona, Real, Atletico, Juventus, Bayern, Man City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Leicester, Tottenham, Paris, Inter, Milan).

not a good game ... pitch was a disaster and the weather didn't help. Both teams were quite poor I thought, though it was obvious that Dortmund played their 5th game of the preseason while it was only the 2nd for United. First goal was poor from Johnstone, second one a harsh penalty after a Valencia handball. Dembele and Castro with two strikes of genius in the second half. Good for Mkhitaryan to score against his former team and good for Shaw to complete a full 90 minutes.

Jones and Rojo were a total disaster at centre back. Bailly was good.

Sometimes I just shake my head at the way big clubs do business. I can readily admit when Europeans do things better than N Americans (no tipping, relegation) but one they they suck at is parity and equality among clubs.

Senator Clay Davis
07-25-2016, 09:20 AM
It's the paradox of American/European sports. America, home of capitalism, has it with most of its major sports being pure socialism, salary caps and revenue sharing and drafts. Europe, home to socialism, has basically pure capitalism with sports, money always wins and there are no rules to stop the big clubs from dominating.

GirlySports
07-25-2016, 09:23 AM
American sports is a monopoly. Parity within the league and the league doesn't have to play other leagues. It's just playing with yourself.

In soccer if you have parity in your own league, that champion isn't going to beat anyone.

They had a better domestic point total and goal differential, plus won the Champions League (actually were the first German team to ever win the treble), the season before Pep took over there.

If anything they stayed the same with Pep, or took a step back since they didn't win the CL in any of his three seasons there.

Especially considering they spent a lot of money to poach their biggest rivals talent once Pep showed up.

Pissed at Rome for that ridiculous effort - I will be in Rome for one of the Champions League matchdays so there was the potential to catch a game if the draw worked out.

You have the advantage going home with the away goal and you completely implode.

Concede 8 minutes in, and then two red cards within the first 40 minutes.

That team just always seems to lose their head in big matches.

Dinamo is a solid club these days and Croatia seems to have a never ending factory of soccer talent. It's baffling, actually.

It's crappy though that the corrupt brass running the club will just get richer instead of reinvesting in the club, or the Croatia FA forcing some type of revenue sharing among Croatian clubs.

In comparison to the Euro squad, Milner, Bertrand, Barkley, Wilshere and Rashford are out. Michail Antonio is in for the first time, while Shaw, Walcott, Drinkwater and Jagielka are back in. No idea how Walcott makes it over Barkley, but oh well.

Feel like with Barca, Madrid, and Bayern spending so much money since 2013 that the divide between the top 3 teams and the rest of the European pack has become huge.

Well, I'd agree and disagree, I think a huge chunk of it has to do with the fact that English teams havent spent particularly well.

Besides, Juve, PSG and Atletico are consistently in the mix as well.

SuperMatt18
09-13-2016, 03:25 PM
Yeah lots playing into it for sure - doesn't help that from a development perspective that Spain/Germany are so far ahead it's not even fair. Causing their big domestic team to have a big advantage in attracting talent.

Plus then on top of the quality of "national players" you have Barca, Bayern, and Madrid spending a ton on the best foreign talent- and spending it smartly. They really have consolidated the true world class players (especially attacking players) on those 3 teams.

Italian football overall has taken a step back - with only Juve being a real threat at any point in time - and even they have a harder time keeping their best players. The Milan teams are shadows of their former selves, and Roma has never been a factor.

English football has seen a lot of poor spending and a lot of that is due to playing second fiddle to the big 3 mentioned on the transfer market. Can't get the true "stars" to come to England so are over-spending on great but not world class players, or younger players with potential.

German football had a bit of a resurgence - but Bayern spending and purchasing all the good german players ended that quickly.

I just feel like there used to be more intrigue watching this in the mid to late 00's - especially in the group stages.

SuperMatt18

In terms of today's performances it's interesting to see Kimmich score twice in one of his first starts as a deep lying holding midfielder for Bayern.

Played Right Back for Germany at the Euros and I think he played there for Bayern last year as well.

Could be interesting to see if they keep him in the middle.

Besides, Juve, PSG and Atletico are consistently in the mix as well.

Is it all spending though? I mean clearly that is a piece of it, but then you look at the Premier League and there is a lot of healthy competition there. There are probably 6-7 teams that are serious contenders for the top 4 and of those at least 4 who could make a reasonable case to win the league. Didn't Bayern win by some crushing amount last year though? So they can roll out the A side midweek for the Champions League without a huge concern and then roll through domestically for the most part.

Sadly, I think Matt has a great point.

None of the English the clubs are way out front in terms of acquiring and developing players. Thus they have to spend, alot.

Depth is paramount in England, due to the domestic parity & think only City & United have the depth to play top football both domestically and in Europe with the same level of competitiveness. That's because they have oodles of money.

The money can't be forever though; not with mediocre results vs the spend.

Senator Clay Davis
09-13-2016, 05:35 PM
I think United are unique though, they have such a massive worldwide following that the money will always be rolling in. I mean Depay had the number 1 selling jersey last year. Did he really deserve that title? Of course not, but United fans are plentiful and bought a lot of Memphis jerseys. I imagine Pogba and Zlatan will easily be 1-2 in jersey sales this year. And I mentioned it in the Prem League thread but I read United has at least 70 different sponsors. Will they lose some support if they go another couple years winning nothing besides FA Cups? Maybe, but I think it'd have to be a steep decline into a midtable club for that to happen.

Well it wasn't good for Spurs of course, but really they were a little unlucky here. Monaco took advantage of their two shots on goal in the first half. The first was a nice strike. The second the ball just fell perfectly and that's life. Tottenham looked really good for a stretch though, and just couldn't get the equaliser. I think Pochettino should've started Dembele, and he made a significant impact when he came on in the second half, but it was just one of those games I think.

I do think that in the reverse Spurs could easily come out on the other side of this score though. Monaco wasn't impressive for the most part.

eh, all good.

I do have family connection to the city of Manchester, my grandfather was a huge soccer fan and player. Choosing between City and United was pretty random, because I have no way of knowing anymore who he preferred. So I did "pick". Yeah, I read the transcript of that interview and it seems pretty clear to me that Jose is going to do everything in his power to get United out of the Europa as soon as possible.

United shouldnt have a problem finishing in the Top 4 this season (after dropping that astonishing amount of transfer cash) so the Europa isnt as big a deal for them and Jose pretty much openly said that he considers The Europa league beneath him and United.

the save was incredible

tale of two halves really

hit the post twice in the first half and had 2 or 3 other half chances, plus scored on a pass that was rightfully called back inches offside, then Leverkusen pressed up and went for it in the 2nd half

Spurs did have chances to make something on the break but couldn't pick the right pass, I would have brought N'Koudou on earlier for some speed to counter

ya it already started, Mahrez didnt play on the weekend

it makes sense now, they are already basically 8 points back of top 4, but they are rest assured a spot in the CL KO stages unless something drastic happens so they have that until at least Late February

they probably prioritize league/FA cup games too going forward as well

the save was incredible

tale of two halves really

hit the post twice in the first half and had 2 or 3 other half chances, plus scored on a pass that was rightfully called back inches offside, then Leverkusen pressed up and went for it in the 2nd half

Spurs did have chances to make something on the break but couldn't pick the right pass, I would have brought N'Koudou on earlier for some speed to counter

either way a point was good. 2nd place in the group with 2 of 3 games left at Wembley and the away game is shortest travel just to Monaco

Spurs are in good shape I think, obviously depending on how things go at Wembley. I also was a little surprised not to see N'Koudou (and I am surprised we haven't seen more of him at times in general because he adds an element that not many others bring). I thought that Spurs were better with Janssen there to hold up and create chances that way as well.

The troubling thing for Spurs in general isn't new though. They play a great first half and let teams hang around. That was the problem yesterday where for one reason or another they didn't score. We saw it this weekend against WBA as well. Its one thing to say "they got unlucky" and when it happens once or twice, it is probably the case, but when it happens more often its more concerning. I don't know if the other teams adjust at half and Spurs just don't or what the issue is, but it seems to me to be a running trend.

Dinamo Zagreb only a -8 goal differential after three matches.

It pisses me off the club has no ambition and they are just content with developing players, then selling them. I know corruption is hard to root out, but it is still annoying.

It's actually surprising they are so good at developing talent.

If he scored them, he'd have the record for total goals scored in Europe for a United player, surpassing RVN.

Arsenal claw one back.

I was watching a preview show and they specifically mentioned how Arsenal are in good shape in their group right now but always manage to find a way to screw things up.

I cant imagine that Ludogorets could hold this, but it really speaks to his point. Why on Earth were they down 2-0?

In fairness, Borjan got sold out by his defenders, they were way, way too far away so he has to come out or just hand Ozil the whole net and hope for a mistake.
