Football is back! The long offseason is behind us and we can look forward to the glorious return of our nation's favourite (and best) game.

Will Edmonton repeat? Who is the beast of the East? How does Calgary fare without Cornish? Many questions will be answered this year

Predictions:
West
1. Edmonton
2. Calgary
3. Winnipeg
4. Saskatchewan
5. BC

I think Winnipeg could have the top offence in the league (if Willy plays to his potential and stays healthy) while Saskatchewan and BC will both be tire fires in the bottom of the West (which will be an improvement over last year!)

East
1. Hamilton
2. Ottawa
3. Toronto
4. Montreal

No clear favourite in the East, I think Hamilton, Ottawa, and Toronto are all pretty even and the difference is likely who gets the best QB play.

Long live the CFL! Here's to a great season

I might switch Winnipeg and Saskatchewan, but the Riders will need a healthy Darian Durant to post a winning record this season.

Western:
1.) Calgary, 2.) Edmonton

It is toss-up between the Riders and BC for 3rd place. It will all depend on how the QB plays. Is Jennings stays as the starter or Lulay steal the starting position sometime this season? How about Darian Durant? If he stays healthy, Riders might have a chance but if not, they will be in last place in the West. I still pick BC as 3rd and Riders 4th.

5.) Winnipeg is very intriguing to me. They were busy in the off-season again but are those pickups works out? Drew Willy need to be healthy and consistent. If he does and the off-season pans out, they might leap to 3rd place; otherwise I pick them last in the West.

Eastern:
1.) Hamilton - I think Collaros will miss the first few games but they are still better than Argos and Redblacks.

2.) Ottawa - encore season for Henry Burris? I think this team is still improving and they won't have a hangover from good finish last season.

A toss-up between Toronto and Montreal. Toronto - after Ricky Ray, TO does not have a super sub QB like Collaros or Harris to rely on anymore. Chad Owens is gone to TigerCats. Montreal loses out on the QB position against Argos. They have a few good young QBs but very raw on CFL talent. If one of these QB takes the starting QB and play well, then they might beat out Toronto for 3rd place in the East. Otherwise I will give Toronto a slight edge for 3rd place.

I'm very excited for the season. So happy to see Argos play at BMO instead of skydome. Riders final year at Taylor Field.

I think we see something like a 12-6 take the West. Maybe the East too. I think we see a lot of parity this year, except Montreal, I think they are gonna be awful.

West:
Winnipeg - they have some holes but I think they could break out.
BC - Buono behind the bench makes them a contender
Calgary - solid as always but have some holes from last year
Edmonton - I think they have a decent campaign but don't rebound well after losing Jones
Sask - I think this is considered a rebuild year. Jones will make them more competitive but I'd say .500 is most likely.

East:
Hamilton - solid qb and coach.
TO - get the BMO field bump.
Ottawa - they will stay solid but don't have the tools to be a top team yet
Montreal - bad bad bad

Notable injuries for Week 1 games.

@Scratchingpost:
#Ticats @tedlaurent will not play Thursday vs. #Argos. Has been placed on the one-game injured list. @99Canadian99 to start. #CFL

Also of note: #Ticats @ZCollaros7 moved to 6-game injured list. #CFL

@DarrinBauming:
No sign of Andrew Harris at #Bombers practice this morning. Have to assume he's doubtful for Week 1 vs #AlsMTL.

With the American Tim Flanders at RB, Julian Feoli-Gudino enters for Jace Davis at slotback to balance the ratio. #Bombers

@PentonKirk:
Looks like Julian Feoli-Gudino will get the start over Jace Davis with Tim Flanders at tailback. #Bombers

I think the Stamps could be in for a tough year. Too much turn over on offense, new head coach, and a couple key changes on D.

Guess we will see. Hope I'm wrong.

I came here to post how awesome it is to see CFL back on grass... But apparently I'd rather find out what your concern is.

Why?

I came here to post how awesome it is to see CFL back on grass... But apparently I'd rather find out what your concern is.

As I said earlier, from the CFL perspective the Argos moving to BMO is absolutely fantastic. But from the soccer perspective, there's good reason to be annoyed. Since I support both (albeit I support soccer to a much greater degree), it's a lukewarm scenario for me.

BMO Field was originally built to serve as the National Soccer Stadium, even though there was talk for some time in the early 2000's that a multi use field would host both sports. When the Argos backed out of the York University deal in the mid 2000's, BMO was built specifically for the U-20 World Cup. In a country where we have so few of these soccer specific facilities it's disappointing to see one paid for with public funds become multi use, even though it was really inevitable from the start that it would become multi use.

The big concern from the soccer perspective is how the playing field holds up over the course of the year. So far, looks pretty good, especially when you compare the pitch to stadiums in Houston and Dallas that were built for soccer and host high school football as well. And if it holds up into October and November then any concerns I have will go away.

Anyways, I don't want to turn this into a soccer vs. football pissing match.

Saskatchewan trying to acquire James Franklin.

CFL sources say the Eskimos asked for 2016 No. 1 overall pick, offensive lineman Josiah St. John and a first round selection, but the Riders said no. That does not mean that the deal is completely dead.

@ArashMadani:

Per @JDunk12: Esks, Riders talking trade. EDM wants No. 1 pick Josiah St. John AND a first for QB James Franklin. SSK, coherently, declined.

Burris goes down in bizarre fashion. Untouched, off a play fake, it's as if his right hand gave out on him? Never seen that before.. Then Harris cold.off the bench , first play, first snap, airs out a 71-yard TD pass...

Cecil Terwilliger

As usual the refs are the stars.

There needs to be a league wide mandate to lower calls. I've seen at least 3-4 weak calls already and I've only been watching since the 9 min mark of the 4th qtr.

Challenges are still an issue. Yesterday the refs discussed a challenge for at least 3 minutes before they even asked the coach what the challenge was. Then discussed for another 3-4 minutes before they announced it couldn't be challenged.

This isnt on Dickenson guys...that OLine is a shadow of where it should be because of injuries. Yes DD has made a couple questionable calls but when your line is a patchwork of guys playing together for the first time, this kind of slopiness is inevitable.

Well, that was certainly not the prettiest football game. Stamps will be fine, injuries, while they should never be used as an excuse, hurt, especially when it is the big boys up front. Some weird play calls, a bizarre collapse in the special teams in the second half. They'll figure it out

hopefully some lessons learned in this one.

left to many points on the field between the goal line stand against, missed fg's and turnovers.

2 pt loss on the road after getting a new HC, DC and losing your starting rb, wr, mlb. leader in the secondary along with a rash of injuries on the o-line isnt the end of the world.

Lots of work to do though.

He might be an OK head coach, but he needs to relinquish the OC role. Every opponent knows his playbook now. The "super tricky" red zone plays are just dumb.

Sewell is an incredibly smart individual who has completed an accelerated MBA program at McMaster University. That's the reason he would not play outside of Hamilton and Toronto, not because he is a "Mommy's Boy" or whatever BS reasons the yokels over at riderfans are slinging around.

Contrary to popular belief in Saskatchewan, it's probably the lowest desired destination for players in the league. Sure people will go there to play football when that's essentially their only real means to put bread on the table or they want to continue playing the game (and they may even come to love it there), but when there are other options, people aren't just going to uproot and go there all the time. Sewell only has a couple years left, and if he's got some connections and something brewing in the GTA it would make no sense to leave for a couple of years at a lousy CFL salary that he could probably make close to with his MBA. He needs to consider his post-CFL career which will be for the majority of his adult life.

I'm sure the Riders were well aware that Sewell did not want to leave the Golden Horseshoe but thought he would choose football and move anyways. They thought wrong. Rider fans can call Barker shady all they want, but to take personal shots at Sewell is ridiculous....and well the typical Rider fan thing to do. I don't know how they can call out Barker though when their organization just stole and entire coaching staff led by one of the most disloyal coaches to ever grace a CFL sideline.

When you make a trade for someone in the CFL, there's always a risk they will not report. The majority of these guys are not making big money (unless they are QB's) and it doesn't take much for them to say they are done given the physical risk they take for a very short career. This isn't the first time this will happen, and it's not the last. We just have to listen to it because it's the Riders.

Sewell's intelligence and participation in Mac's accelerated MBA program is pretty well documented. I think it's far less of a leap to suggest retiring at 30 rather reporting to Saskatchewan is likely due to his education and large post-CFL earnings potential while being at the twilight of his CFL careers than it being do to him being " A Mommy's Boy".

It looks bad on Jones more then anything else. If it's a known fact that he'll only play in Ontario, don't you think Jones should've asked for permission to talk to Sewel before the trade was completed?

Especially since Jones was in Toronto when he was drafted.

You can't stop paying somebody, it's called breach of contract. Watch the league fine him again. What an assclown!

According to this source, only eight days after Chris Jones had accepted the dual role in Saskatchewan, his assistant coaching staff, many of whom had not made final decisions to stay or go, found out they were not being paid on Dec. 15, discovering they would not be compensated for the two weeks subsequent to winning the Grey Cup, even though they were still employed by the club.

When the assistant coaches inquired, they were told that the instruction of non payment came directly from Eskimos GM Ed Hervey. Incensed, any doubt about how many would follow Jones to Saskatchewan was eliminated immediately. Not only did Stephen McAdoo, Craig Dickenson, Jarious Jackson, Mike Scheper, Ed Philion, Phillip Lolley and Jason Shivers accept offers to join Jones in Regina, but the Riders organization “made them whole,” by agreeing to pay them for the entire month of December.

That's because they won it last year, not this year...

Except for the ref screw jobs, the defense for the riders looks much improved. Edmonton has had very little that weren't freebies.

Offence on the other hand is bad. Turnovers, missed catches, poor play calls.

Durant looks decent, I really like the receiving group, especially Collins. Newsome will be in the conversation for best DE by the end of the year. But there are still a lot of holes to be filled. Is it bad that my expectations were so low that this is better than I thought they'd be?

No I think that's fair. Few brain farts and bad calls to the other way and they may have had the upset. That screw up on the short yardage snap killed all rider momentum. Edmonton then got 14 free points. Then another major brain fart on the blown coverage leading to 100yds in two plays.

Gonna be a rough year but hopefully they improve throughout and finish strong.

Ooh as I type that Edmonton gifts us field position.
