That is fantastic! I was even talking about that classic last night with my wife.

If the flames want to solidify a playoff spot moving forward, these divisional games are becoming so important. We're 4-7-1 in divisional games so far.

Wills figures Raymond sits, Bollig plays. Colborne plays bottom line with Stajan and Bollig.

I'm not sure about Bollig over Raymond, but Colborne hasn't worked on the top line. Hartley seems like he's giving a lot players a shot at the spot - so far I've seen Frolik, Hudler, Jones, Jooris, Colborne, Bennett and (I think for a shift or two) Raymond. Of those Jones has been the best FWIW. Hudler maybe now has a pass if the injury has been around all year.

Raymond-Stajan-Colborne always look decent together, but they rarely played as a line outside of pre-season/exhibition it seems. I can see this being the 4th line against Florida unless Bob figures they need a bit more size that night too.

As for tonight, Flames win a close one 4-3.

Goals from Gaudreau, Monahan, Jooris and what the heck, Bennett breaks out.

I think the sharks will be too relaxed after slapping around the leafs the other night. Hopefully we can catch them off guard and get out to an early lead and then dominate the rest of the game.

6-1 Flames with the first goal coming within 2 minutes.

Fingers crossed for a new 1st line that dominates for the rest of the year!

Still waiting for this team to take the next step. After their hot streak, they've been fumbling around the .500 mark for a bit. They've had some significant rest, so I definitely want to see them flying out there tonight. No more passive play.

They're starting to regress a bit back to before the season started and are 5-5 in their last 10. This game seems like an important one to get things back on track because we're starting to see some distance between us and Arizona now which leaves 4 teams battling for one spot.

Raymond strung a few good games together, but the last one wasn't great (though that wasn't an uncommon thing for Flames players).

The Sharks' D is fairly sizeable - 2 big guys and no one who is small, so I imagine that's the reason for Bollig, aside from just giving him a chance to play.

Frolik instantly slots into top 6 RW.

I think he means that he'd come in for Granlund. I'm not sure that's the case. Assuming Bollig is just too different of a player, Raymond's been waived already and Jooris has sat a bunch of times as well. So while Granlund is waiverproof and can be sent down, I don't think there's much of an impediment to sending Raymond, who won't be claimed, or Jooris who probably wouldn't be either.

Would definitely help. That 2nd line doesn't look very good. On a more positive note I hope Ferland gets a full game on the top line. Interested to see how that line does tonight. Sure would be nice if those 3 could develop some good chemistry.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 30 days have passed and Raymond would need to clear waivers aggressive. Not that it's actually a major problem.

Edit: Nvm, misunderstood your post. I agree.

I'm trying to understand why Engelland is still in. Smid played awesome for two games and then gets randomly scratched the next two.

Engelland has not been great since early in the season when he had Kulak/Hamilton handling a lot of primary puck-moving duties. Wideman doesn't have the skating to do what those two guys were doing.

Since Smid's conditioning stint he's been the better player. By a big margin.

I think Bennett - Granlund - Jooris could be fun to watch as they each have a part of their game that complements each other. Listed as the second line but I'm sure they'll be use more as a third with Bouma - Stajan - Jones taking on the top defensive assignment.

Hope Ferland shines on the big line too! Hard not to be happy for his turn in life in the past few years

I haven't been a big supporter of Ferland outside of the playoffs but lately he seems to be able to generate some offense and some good plays. I'm taking that as a sign that his confidence is growing.

I really hope he can stick up there cause his size and physicality would help that line immensely.

I am a big Granlund fan and hope to see more from him. I feel like his play may have dropped off from when he was first called up. Seems like that happened last year too.

Interesting comments from Colborne:

http://calgaryherald.com/sports/hockey/nhl/calgary-flames/wanted-winger-to-play-with-johnny-and-monny

The daily duties of the ideal candidate?

“Go to the net, be a physical presence, get in on the forecheck,” Colborne suggested. “I’d get the puck and get it in their hands. That was pretty much it — put it into either of those two guys’ hands.”

Simple, right?

“But it’s not always the easiest,” Colborne warned. “Those guys like to have the puck on their sticks, too. You have to be willing to play without the puck a lot and just know it could come to you at any second.”

I think Colborne recognizes he wasn't the fit for just that reason.

I think this will be a huge game for ferland and I think we will all be talking about how great a fit he is in that top line by the end of tonight. 1 goal, 1 assist, and a fight for ferland tonight. Gaudreau with 3 points. Monahan with a goal. Flames win 4-2.

Not a fan of Backlund and Ferland being split up, they've been awesome together. That said, I'm even less of a fan of Colborne, Jones or Mayray being on the top line.

This lineup looks so bare without Hudler or Frolik. 2 top 6 forwards, a borderline 19 year old top 6 (Bennett may be looking great, but need production regardless from a top 6). The rest are bottom 6. Sure we have several great bottom 6 guys and Ferland is close to breaking out, but you can cycle anyone outside of Monahan and Gaudreau and end up with the same result.

I've wanted to see Ferland on the top line for a while now. I think he's got the skating and hands to keep up. Wouldn't mind seeing him rough up anyone that slashes Gaudreau either.

If he did that Hartley would pull him off the line the second he took a penalty. That's not the flames identity

Is this supposed to be green text? I don't think Hartley would punish ferland for sticking up for Johnny. Too many players are taking liberties with gaudreau as is... Brent Burns is one of them... I hope ferland goes after him if he tries it tonight.

He doesn't have to take a penalty. Chirping someone and letting them know he's going to bash his face in next time he slashes Gaudreau is part of what makes this experiment so intriguing. He should be able to create more space for them.

So he laughs slashes gaudreau again and watches as Ferland tries to do something about it and takes a penalty?

This is the new NHL. They won't call the slashes but they will call a guy like Ferland going after a guy like Burns IMO.

At least get in his face, give him a facewash, and call him a ####head. These things matter.

Anyways if someone takes liberties with Johnny and it goes over the line of just a wack or two, I personally have 0 problem with Ferland taking a penalty to let him know it's not ok. That may be just me, though.

Ferland is far from stupid. He will however target a player and continually look for clean devastating hits against them.

Ask Kevin Bieksa or Luca Sbisa about it if you don't believe me.

Who's gonna take penalties? Stajan? Jones? Colbourne? Other than Bollig, who's not playing much these days, and Ferland, Flames have neither skilled Marchand-type agitators, nor big wingers that are not afraid to take a roughing penalty nor big 3rd pairing defensemen that are willing to punish the offenders on-ice for taking liberties with our young players. I thought that's why we had Engelland, but he's not playing much either nowadays. I loved Engelland's awakening during playoffs last season, but he has not been the same this season.

Ok, so I've seen a trend on here that's bothering me a little (in fact, you could say it "grinds my gears"). Only 3 people bothered to thank Halifax Drunk for posting the game thread today, and I'm one of them.

What the hell people? When did we get so stingy with the gratitude around here? These things don't just magically write themselves. HD goes through a lot to put all the data together along with photos and give a cohesive summary of the matchup. It takes time and effort which is UNPAID, so the least you could do is show some appreciation. As a fellow writer on this site, the only thing we get in return after taking time from our busy schedules to add to this site in a meaningful way is to have our fellow fans let us know that they appreciate our work.

Seriously...all you have to do is click a button. It's the least you can do and it makes us feel like our efforts are appreciated. Come on CP, you're better than this.
