I signed up for the premium account with MLB in August and now it seems like I can't watch any games. I'm in China so it shouldn't be blacked out. Does this mean I have to buy another account for the postseason! What a ripoff if true!

This is Exhibit A on why it is so huge to avoid the wild card. You run into a great pitching performance, and you are one and done.

I have thought that too. Other than being a bit heavier, he reminds me so much of Olerud at the plate. And he looks like he's going to be a beauty.

I'd say that's a dirty play by Utley, but he did his job and took a pretty good shot to the head. Things figure to get more intense now, Mets will retaliate at some point.

GirlySports

JayP

One of the dirtiest plays I've seen in awhile. No idea why the MLB still let's that crap go. Not even the smallest attempt to go at the bag by Utley. That's not hard nosed - that's just attempting to injure.

The worst part is the joke umps called Utley safe when he didn't come anywhere near second base.

Senator Clay Davis
10-10-2015, 09:55 PM
It's funny but if Utley actually tried to slide into the base he might have been safe anyway. Instead went right for Tejada. This game figures to get out of control now with the Dodgers ahead. Mets will retaliate now rather than next game.

True but i dont think its a DP Tejada can make. Just hold it and brace for contact.

transplant99
10-11-2015, 08:03 AM
apparently I am in the vast minority, but I see nothing at all wrong with that play and certainly don't see it as a "dirty" play.

Utley didn't go in with his spikes up in an attempt to injure him, he went in with a hard slide intending to break up a double play. That has been a play in baseball for well over a 100 years, so I'm not sure why it is different for him in this case.

Sure it's unfortunate Tejada was hurt on the play, but that's just part of the game and particularly playing SS and covering 2nd base.

SuperMatt18
10-11-2015, 09:45 AM
I think it was somewhat dirty but more because it was a hip check then an actual slide

Utley suspended for Games 3 and 4

browna
10-12-2015, 08:00 AM
Utley suspended because of the injury to Tejada, nothing more.

Hes going to appeal, and apparently show video of similar slides that have gone unpunished (of which there are dozens of this and any season), but of course didn't result in a broken leg.

Secondarily, with the NY media getting Mets fans so worked up about it,MLB removing all the possibilities around a situation developing either with retaliation, or even NYC crowd issues, is another factor.

Not a whole lot different than the slide Donaldson made in Game 1 which ended up in him getting his noggin rattled. But yeah, there are literally hundreds of examples.

Its hardly time for MLB to change the rules and set a precedence now. Make the changes over the off season but suspending a guy in the middle of the playoffs for a play that is made (and has been made for over 100 years) is asinine to me.

I suspect that the appeal will reduce it to 1 game, only so emotions can settle down a little and we don't see something really ugly tonight.

Otherwise you know Utley will be targeted by the Mets which is fine and how things are dealt with in baseball, but hoping no nutbar in the crowd decides to become johnny hero.

Disagree - very big difference. And for me, exactly where the line should be drawn.

First of all, nothing wrong with an aggressive slide. But the key word there is 'slide'. And that's the difference with these two.

Donaldson slid. He slid before the bag. And he slid into the bag. Then he made contact with the SS.

Utley was past the bag, wide of the bag, and he never slid. His first contact wasn't with the ground it was with Tejada's leg. Not a slide at all.

I am all for what Donaldson did. And I am all for Utley getting suspended for what he did.

I think the parameters should be:

1) slide must start before the bag
2) the player needs to remain in line with the bag (be able to make contact with it)
3) it must actually be a slide (i.e. hit the ground first)

I don't understand this sentiment of "he didn't slide"...of course he freaking slid...that's why there is a controversy to begin with.

Was it late? Yes.

Was it hard? Yes.

And why do I keep hearing about "making contact" with the base...his hand went right over the base completely. I think people are seeing what they want to see instead of what happened.

But slides to the sides of the bag happen ALL the time at EVERY base, so no idea why in this case he had to remain in line with the bag...that's just ridiculous.

Again, this scenario is played out daily in baseball for 6 months a year, but in this case because Tejada got hurt, its some aggregious action that needs to result in further discipline, which is the ONLY reason Torre did this at all.

Truth is that in about 10 minutes you can find 20 examples of similar incidents that occurred this year that resulted in no further action against the player.

And again it also appeases somewhat, the bloodlust that Mets fans and players may have had going into tonights contest which I somewhat agree with, but is no reason to keep him from playing in reality.

Its such 2015/PC/we must be offended by everything stuff...which is no way to make decisions.

http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/chase-utley-start-game-3-mets-harvey-slide-article-1.2393427#

This shows him in full contact with Tejada as he is just getting to the ground (hit before slide).

He is also 8 feet past the bag already.

I am all for aggressive slides - it's part of the game. But this was a check, not a slide.

It isn't PC, there has to be a line somewhere.

On the ground before the bag IMO but most certainly before making contact with Tejada, also hand over the bag as he goes by.

All I'm saying is this happens daily during the season...and no one ever gets suspended for it. So why change the rules in the middle of a playoff round?

No offence, but did you just forget 1926, 1931, 1934, 1942, 1944, 1946, 1964, 1967, 1982, 2006, and 2011. Are you trying to suggest that the Cardinals are chokers? Because they're certainly not...just got beat by the hotter team. They'll be one of the top teams again next year. Cardinals are the Yankees of the National League, but they might not win again next year because it's an even numbered year...baseball gods usually save the World Series Pennants for the San Francisco Giants on even numbered years. ;)

That's three Royals players who have had a parent pass away in the last few months. Looks like Volquez only found out after the game.

Just saw the opening pitch to Escobar tonight.
Beauty.

Jays needed some of that swagger, as shown in that regular season series in Toronto.

Shocked that Ventura after his trash talking in the Jays series, and throwing at Lawrie, didn't throw one at a Met. Though I expect that at some point from one of the Royals crybabies.

Terrible base running actually. He would've been out by a mile with a half decent throw. Like usual, the Royals are lucky enough to benefit from a ridiculous mistake at the wrong time. That was pitch and catch to throw out Hosmer.

And all this after Collins is stupid enough to throw out the numbers and go with Harvey four times through the heart of the order over his lights out closer. The Royals are going to be the worst World Series team in history.

They put pressure on the defense. Duda is a mediocre first baseman so they went for it.

Gotta hand it to the Royals this postseason, they have killed all three closers they have faced.

Yeah, this is the first time all year the defense has had to deal with pressure throws. That's the cliche response when you made the wrong play but were lucky enough to have it succeed. Royals baseball!

I get the Royals beat the Jays and people don't want to give them credit, but they are a great team because they're annoying to play against. They have few weaknesses on the field, though their manager is weak, and they rarely make mistakes. Saying they're the worst WS team in history is a bit much. They're the greatest pitching performance ever from back to back rings. Assuming their ownership isn't cheap they might win a few more in the coming years.

Sylvanfan

Yeah, the Royals bullpen is tough. I think the 06 Cards and their 83 wins is the weaket WS Champion ever. They lucked out drawing he Tigers that year.

They are a good team but if you wanna play the anecdote game the Royals are a Alcedes "career .630 OPS" Escobar not hitting .500 in the ALCS from sitting at home right now too. It works both ways.

Right but welcome to playoff baseball. There's always those guys who just get into zones or take it to a level they never have or will again. Like say Daniel Murphy for the Mets.

well they were down 7-0 in the wildcard game last year. lose that and the team probably blows up, none of this happens.

It just amazes me how they have hit every closer yet their closer Davis strikes out everyone

Daniel Murphy is also an above average hitter. Escobar is one of the worst hitters in the majors. Good hitters getting hot happens. Awful hitters channelling Pete Rose isn't something that happens every year.

They also have the ability to basically play 5 inning games because of their bullpen. Every team that wins the World Series needs a few guys to up their game that are unexpected. There's always that element in winning teams.

GirlySports

thing is that the Royals hit so deep that in a 7 game series they see every reliever 4 or 5 times. The guy who started this inning pitched in all 5 games this series. The Jays Osuna pitched in 4 of the 6 games. At some point a pitcher has nothing left to throw at these guys.

Kinda cool to live in KC. Tomorrow this entire city is shut down, all school districts announced closure today, as well as colleges and most businesses. Everyone in the Metro area is going downtown to the parade and 'rally point' which is our train station, Union Station. Three years ago, tickets went for $4.00-$7.00 each in the cheap seats. Now each game is sold out every night, and the 'cheap seats' are $45 and up! Been amazing to see this city love their 'Cinderella team.'

Here's our crew partying downtown last night- can't wait until the parade tomorrow. What a great season!!
