View Full Version : Joni "Oreo" Ortio

Thought it would be an appropriate time to make a thread about Joni Ortio. Talk about a guy who has shown strong games and two shutouts in the past 7 games hes played at the NHL level.

Seriously can this guy be our next Kiprusoff at his peak? They are the same height and weight, both are from Finland and Ortio is trained by Kipper in the offseason.

I know in your innocence calling Ortio, Oreo seems cool but what calling someone an Oreo means is somewhat a racial epithet. It means you are black on the outside and white on the inside. I'd just avoid it's use as it's not fitting and not nice.

Term for African Americans that the black community is generally offended with for betraying their roots usually for dating caucasion girls, dressing too white, talking too white, etc. The term is branded OREO since they are "Black on the outside, White on the inside"

Here's even a spoof about it.

They also played for the same Finnish team over seas that Kipper now owns and Ortio is in the sam position as Kipper was in with the Sharks 3 goalie situation.

Only the second post in and it turns to political and about racism.well done sir.

Didn't the nickname Oreo come about because a t.v pbp miss said his name?

Uh oh, "Oreo" is off limits now for political correctness?

Better off calling him "Hydrox" I guess to be safe:

Sure, but it came about the same way that "Jarmoe" did.

Besides, would you prefer "Orts"? Because that's what it will be.

I live in Vancouver, so this will only alarm people who know the Canucks aren't in the cup finals.

Disagree. The primary meaning of that word is a cookie. Yes, there is a well-known (but less used) "racial" meaning to the word, but as you said yourself, any racial tone to the word wouldn't even make sense here.

We can't and shouldn't just stop using every word that has ever been used as a slur against someone. If anything we should reclaim these types of words that are perfectly common and innocent by themselves. It's not like the word is going to just go away whether or not we use it. (Well, not as long as Oreos are sold anyway.)

If anything, using Oreo as a reference to something else lessens the impact of that words other meanings.

Let's not allow ourselves to succumb to a level of hyper sensitivity that inhibits our ability to use puns and enjoy harmless wordplay.

If Ortio were of mixed light/dark heritage and the nickname was being used as an attempt to degrade him, then by all means blow your whistle.

However.

If people decide to call Ortio Oreo because the names are really similar, and Oreos look like the 0 that Ortio posted on the game sheet tonight, and that he's a cookie-monster eating up would be goals and that makes you want to call him Oreo, well then there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Context, people.

Yes, let's never mention the word Oreo – the single most recognisable cookie brand in the world – because a small group of people use it to degrade each other. No one may ever use this word again.

This is double-reverse racism times 9, y'all.

Pope Francis Reverses Position On Capitalism After Seeing Wide Variety Of American Oreos

http://www.theonion.com/article/pope-francis-reverses-position-capitalism-after-se-51363

WASHINGTON—Admitting the startling discovery had compelled him to reexamine his long-held beliefs, His Holiness Pope Francis announced Tuesday that he had reversed his critical stance toward capitalism after seeing the immense variety of Oreos available in the United States. “Oh, my goodness, look at all these! Golden Oreos, Cookie Dough Oreos, Mega Stuf Oreos, Birthday Cake Oreos—perhaps the system of free enterprise is not as terrible as I once feared,” said the visibly awed bishop of Rome while visiting a Washington, D.C. supermarket, adding that the sheer diversity of flavors, various colors and quantities of creme filling, and presence or absence of an outer fudge layer had led to a profound philosophical shift in his feelings toward the global economy and opened his eyes to the remarkable capabilities of the free market. “Only a truly exceptional and powerful economic system would be capable of producing so many limited-edition and holiday-themed flavors of a single cookie brand, such as these extraordinary Key Lime Pie Oreos and Candy Corn Oreos. This is not a force of global impoverishment at all, but one of endless enrichment.”

Perhaps Pope Francis could learn to be a bit more culturally sensitive in the future.

As for Joni, I am a fan.

Actually, the term for that is banana. Someone who is yellow on the outside, white on the inside.

The opposite is egger. White on the outside, yellow on the inside.

Either way, complaining about the term Oreo, and quoting urban dictionary is a big failure. Sorry Vulcan.

To get back to the OP's point, yes I do believe Ortio to be a legit #1 down the road. Maybe not this season or next, but Finnish goalies are often late bloomers and really come to their own in their late 20s (Kipper, Rinne to name a few). The fact that he comes from Turku and trained with Kipper is enough to convince me.

This article has been posted before, but I'll post it again in case anybody is in doubt of how a Finnish goaltender comes to fruition. Some great quotes by Ortio in that article as well.

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2014/03/the-puck-stops-here/357579/

Never ever doubt a Finnish goalie. I would be perfectly content going with 2 Finnish goalies this season and Hiller being the odd man out. And I am a huge Hiller fan.

Or, you could like a REAL cookie and not all that garbage.

The Voortman logo is sexist towards women and racist towards people from the Netherlands....

And there's a hole in the middle! There are no holes in Ortio's game, that's why he gets "the shutout"

I honestly think he's going to be the starter by the end of the year. It looks great to have a few really good goalie prospects and a young goalie on the roster that has this much potential. Things are looking good and it's hard not to get excited about this team!

I guess there's only 2 people on CP that actually want to talk about Ortio.. Very sad and disrespectful to a goalie who just posted a shutout in the most important game of his career.

Thanks Vulcan for instantly derailing this thread with your ridiculously over sensitive post. I cannot believe you actually think this way. It's that kind of mindset that's turning our society into a place where people fear saying anything in case it offends someone. Maybe you should write a nasty letter to Oreo and ask them to change the name of their cookie because it's also a racial slur and offends people.

I MEAN SERIOUSLY? WE CAN'T CALL A FINNISH GOALIE A COOKIE BRAND???

On topic I really hope Ortio turns into our starting goalie this year and puts up number 1 stats. I think we know what we have in Hiller and Ramo which is average goaltending with hot and cold streaks. The flames need a legit stud if they want to make more noise than last year and it would be amazing if that came in the form of Ortio.
