I would hope given Ortio's contract status and how he would have to clear waivers the management is legitimately looking at all 3 goalies as equals heading into these games.

Ortio has thrown down the gauntlet with this shutout. Let's see if Hiller or Ramo can match him tomorrow.

Amazing how a weakness can be turned into a major strength in almost no time.

In Penticton, he was with Poirier who has been struggling mightily.

In the preseason, he's been on a line with Raymond who has been struggling mightily.

If he puts up this kind of performance with linemates that are able to make and receive a pass (something Raymond and Poirier have had difficulties with) then it'll be something to be concerned about. Till then just have to wait and see.

It would be nice if he started putting up some #'s though.

Just got home from the game. Had tons of fun with my daughter. Flames equipment manager did not disappoint coming through with a Calgary game puck for my daughter. Brandon Bollig also was a class act giving my daughter a frozen practice puck after pre game warmups and shaking hands.

If you listened to the game you probably missed the Flames dominating for about 2 thirds of the game.

Incredible performance by several newbies including Andersson, Kulak, steady play by Morrison.

Ferly was really on his game tonight offensively creating and getting lots of chances.

Ortio tracked the pucked extremely well all game. Lots of nice support by his D including a shout out to Dustin Stevenson. Played steady, not spectacular, but a big guy appearing in his first NHL game. Happened to meet and talk to Dustin's Dad who was in attendance after driving 15+ hours from Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. His Dad is so nice and so proud of his son it is way cool.

Sam Bennett is so impressive with the puck and his vision and tenacity are off the charts for a 19 year old.

The body slam by Mitchell on Nakadal was really bad and for some reason no penalty was called.

BTW, thanks to StubHub we had half price seats in the second row behind the Flames attack zone net for 2 periods...great seats. Only about 7 or 8 thousand people in attendance in the Can tonight, however there were lots of Calgary fans which is always cool.

Tired from a long day, but can't wait for our next 2 Flames/Avs games this season.

One more tidbit I forgot to mention, listened to Roy's post game comments during the presser on the drive home and remembered why (even though this was a preseason game) I cannot stand him...Wow what a pompous ass.

He was noted as playing well in Pentiction by the coaches despite not making it on the score sheet. Seemed like the case again tonight.

No need to be worrying this early into the pre-season when the player is playing well just because the points aren't there.

Why would you judge anyones play on a prospects tournament game? Let alone a guy who's already established himself as an NHLer and wanted to be injury free for this training camp.

It's very likely the Flames told him to get his skating legs under him and use the tournament to prepare for training camp. They didn't need him in the tournament to judge his play or anything, it's Sam friggin Bennett.

Based on the radio, it was Andersson, Jooris, Granlund, Ferland, Ortio, Nakladl (especially his shot velocity) who really stood out. But the whole defence played unexpectedly well, and I didn't hear anything actually bad about anyone.

If he keeps it up Andersson will get his 10 NHL games.

Bennett's only 19. I don't even care about point totals for him this upcoming season. Only that he learns the system and steadily improves his play with and without the puck. Expecting him to come in and put on an offensive showcase like Gaudreau did is unfair to him and I doubt the coaches expect that either.

His time will come to shine. There is absolutely zero rush.

Andersson is looking more and more like a major steal. The knock on him in juniors was conditioning, but I'm not seeing/hearing anything related to that. If he keeps this level of play up, he'll be hard to reassign.

Kulak has really turned his career around since being sent to the ECHL. Looks like that was the wake up call he needed, ever since then he's been on an upwards trajectory. If he doesn't get a spot on opening day (Brodie injury), he's gotta be solidifying himself as one of the first call-ups on the blueline.

We have too many guys that can help this team and not enough spots -- good problem to have.

Well, he himself admitted that conditioning was a problem for him, I believe Conroy mentioned it as well - it has been a bit of theme for him, but one that is definitely improving (he himself stated that it is improving, but not there yet).

What is nice in that regard is that he does seem committed to conditioning now, and players who do really well with sub-par conditioning can experience a nice jump in their play when that gets corrected. Being the third highest scoring defencemen with poor conditioning and in his first season over-seas? I definitely expect his stock to rise quickly.

People love to point out that Kylington had top 10 (and even top 5) skill in the draft but fell. The same thing happened with Andersson, however. He was also listed in the top 10 in some preliminary draft rankings before last season started, and fell for some reason. Flames arguably drafted two top-10 talents, and are showing well right now. Hopefully they continue to show well and develop well. It could be franchise-changing.

SuperMatt18
09-25-2015, 10:41 AM
Was a high risk high reward draft for the Flames first two picks.

Two young Swedish d-men that had great talent but some question marks.

For Andersson it was his conditioning, and he seems to be committed to fixing that.

For Kylington it was hockey sense, and attitude, too early to tell for hockey sense, but from everything I have seen post draft his attitude looks great.

But the reward aspect for these guys was always huge. Kylington was breaking Swedish records for 16/17 year old defensemen heading into his draft year, and for Andersson he was putting up amazing junior numbers for a d-man in his first CHL season.

Really calculated picks by the Flames IMO, and picks you can make when you believe in your leadership and culture to help get guys on the right track.

Not sure why you think this. Kulak was pretty good before last season started. He had some things he needed to work on, sure, but it's not like he was terrible in the AHL - there just wasn't enough ice time for everybody and he drew the short straw. The ECHL was a good fit for him because it gave him first pairing minutes against a level of competition that's higher than Junior/NCAA, and he worked on his weaknesses in that league while tearing it apart offensively.

It's not like he miraculously saved his career with a wakeup call.

Raymond is soft.

Fair enough. I'm pretty pessimistic when it comes to Raymond doing anything ;)
