It still baffles me that they don't broadcast some games, even if it's only the preseason. Why not allow the Flames to send a tv crew, like the ones responsible for the Penticton tournament?

Also for those wondering Roy said that 2015 Avs frist rounder Mikko Rantanen would not be playing tonight.

I believe the Penticton tournament was done by the Canucks crew, or at least a combination of all four teams that were there.

The odd thing is that the Pepsi Center has one of those new giant replay screens, so they're obviously going to have to do some sort of "broadcast" just for that. I don't understand why they can't set that up to stream with the radio announcers (assuming it's being broadcast on the radio down there). From the highlights I saw, I believe that's what was done for the streams of Monday's Flames and Oilers games.

I assume it probably has more to do with the Avs wanting to sell tickets to the game. If you look, there are some big blocks of tickets still available for tonight. If the Avs aren't going to make the feed available, there's not much the Flames can do to force them.

The good news is that this should be the only game of the season that isn't available anywhere. The Canucks preseason games are both on Sportsnet, and the Jets games are on TSN (which should be on Centre Ice if the TSN feed is blacked out in Calgary). The Flames should stream the Colorado game on Tuesday.

I just heard Sample00 on NHL radio raving about Ferland's physicality in the playoffs last year. He made great points. Then, the very next caller was named Chad and he made some great points about Emile Poirier. Flames talk on the airwaves, I loved it.

Probably in the minority based on the posts but could care less about a preseason game being broadcasted especially on a TNF NFL night and I watch all 82 games, both on TV and live tweeting lol.

On a positive note for those that are upset, next 2 games are on TV!

Even If ortio gives up 5 goals in each of his next pre season games, we won't be exposing him to waivers.

Poe969
09-24-2015, 12:42 PM
I wouldn't be too sure. If BT can't find a taker for Hiller and the Flames are "stuck" with him they'll have to move down Ortio. It isn't the most desirable situation but it is possible. At the beginning of the season, aren't a lot of pretty decent prospects put on waivers but make it through because most teams can't really take any more contracts or something like that?

They list Jooris, Colborne, Granlund as Cs despite where they played most of last year. I bet the Cs will be only Stajan, Bennett, Shore and maybe Granlund. Apparently the Flames will only have Jones on RW, too.

How could you consider yourself a hockey fan if you don't even watch the playoffs?

Agreed I'm not bent out of shape over no live stream for the game, but I am a bit disappointed that every other Canadian franchise has more video coverage than 'Flames TV'. Even Winnipeg has a program aired on TSN (or Sportsnet, I forget).

Even If ortio gives up 5 goals in each of his next pre season games, we won't be exposing him to waivers.

I tend to agree but then again I'm not so sure they may be looking around the league to see if teams are secure with their situations to the point they can sneak him down. Markstrom is a bigger name than Ortio and he passed through waivers last year and we don't really know just how highly the rest of the league thinks Ortio.

Hartley isn't going to slot him ahead of Hiller and Ramo unless in his eyes he's been better so if that doesn't happen what do you do with him as they were discussing on 960 this morning that they don't want to carry three goaltenders. Something has to give here and I don't know what the market is going to be early in the season to trade one of Hiller or Ramo. I really like everything that Treliving has done but signing Ramo in the offseason is a bit of a head scratcher.

Beginning of the year yes, esp. when Stajan was out. But not after he was sent down and recalled IIRC.

He's not a great centre IMO - especially in the dot. He's a better winger. Ditto Jooris and Colborne.

I think we will have a 2A for scoring (Bennett) and a 2(b) for defence (Backlund).

Colborne[dunno if he can do LW]-Bennett-Jones
Bouma-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland/Raymond/Byron-Stajan-Bollig/Jooris/Shore/Granlund

That's a dog's breakfast Flames lineup in Denver, but makes some sense given the loopy three preseason games in three consecutive nights.

I'll be listening for a big game for Ortio, for sure, but it's Granlund who really needs to step it up and right away, imho. I don't think he's an NHL regular, he looks really small and plays sorta tiny, and doesn't do anything especially well. But he's been in the system awhile and gets his opportunities to play, so...maybe he fits somehow.
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him packaged with a "regular" like Raymond, for picks. Wouldn't break my heart.
Poirier has been mediocre at best, even disappointing, but he should be granted more time.

Well Granlund was the best Flame against Connor and the boys in Edmonton, but I agree he needs to show something to make the team as he can still be sent down without waivers.

I'd like to see him on the wing for a couple of games because as a center he loses the draw and is chasing the puck for the rest of the shift. At wing he could use his wicked shot more. Guy has one of the best shots on the team but you can't use it if you are always chasing the puck. Wing is where he should be.

foshizzle11
09-24-2015, 05:37 PM
haha, ya, I think we can be patient with Poirier and I still think he will be better than Shinkaruk. Looking at the Canucks roster, he might just be competing with Sven and his position in the top 6, but it sounds like they are just giving Sven that spot.

Radio for me tonight, just like old times!

saillias
09-24-2015, 06:18 PM
There is no reason to be worried about Poirier. He proved himself an elite AHL player in his rookie season. He's outperformed Shinkaruk by a mile and had a better season than Mantha, a guy who blew his numbers away in the Q, and was considered a better prospect. A 22nd overall pick, progressing the way he has, is very good. The Flames org has done a lot worse than Poirier with its 1st rounders that's for sure.

PugnaciousIntern
09-24-2015, 06:47 PM
Yeah, I'm still quite high on Poirier, it was clear when he was drafted that he needed some farming to round out and refine his game. By the end of last year he looked like a real pro player, compared with what we initially drafted. I think he has all those tools in place and a good defensive awareness, that his focus this year can just be on playing to his strengths. He and Bennett bring a lot of similar elements, it would be amazing if they both develop like they should

Developing prospects is rarely a linear process. Every guy usually goes through ups and downs before figuring it out (if they do). Poirier is struggling to learn how to create points at the NHL level. That's typical for players picked in the latter half of the first round at this stage of their development. Backlund didn't stick in the NHL until the 4th year after he was drafted, this is Poirier's 3rd. Even then it took Backlund another two years to become good at the NHL level. For comparison that would be the 2018-19 season in Poirier's case. Plenty of time.

Not everyone is Monahan and Gaudreau who are awesome right off the bat. I wouldn't be shocked if Bennett struggled a bit this year just because that's the more typical thing.

Nothing that's happened so far has suggested he hasn't been at least as good as them. Ramo let in a super-soft goal in Edmonton, Hiller let in a squeaker (on multiple chances at that) in Calgary, and so far Ortio's only goal allowed in preseason was a cross-ice 2-on-1 between two first line NHL forwards.

From Caged Great's comments, after a meh first day Ortio was better than Hiller in the later days of practice, too.

He doesn't look or sound (tonight) as composed as Ramo and Hiller. If I was coach, I wouldn't be putting him in net if I wanted to win. I don't think Hartley would put him in net either.

I don't think it'll hurt anything. He's had WAY more smart, impressive plays than he's had mistakes in this pre-season and rookie tournament.

And there's no way a turnover in a meaningless last game of the year is at the forefront of the coaches and general managers' mind.

Incredible work by Ortio. Sounded shaky to start the game, but settled his way into a 33 save shutout. That's how you win a spot from an NHL goalie.

Yea... Ortio isn't bringing the kind of game he needs to if he wants to bump Hiller from the big club.
