They're not allowed to dress extra players in the preseason, are they? If not, that means that some of these guys are just there to be warm bodies available to play in case someone goes down in warmup.

yeah, why they have listed 8 defensemen for each squad is a little baffling

they either haven't decided yet, or there are a couple nagging little injuries at play

Yeah, I believe it's a minimum 8 "veterans" that must be suited up. Is it 8?

Yeah, I believe it's a minimum 8 "veterans" that must be suited up. Is it 8?

Yes, with the definition of a veteran being any player who played a minimum of 30 NHL games last season; a goalie who dressed for 50 or played in 30 games last season; any player with a minimum of 100 career NHL games played; or a first round pick from the most-recent draft.

Obviously, the first round picks aren't actual veterans, but the rule is there to make sure that teams don't just send a bunch of no name scrubs to play in preseason games (especially on the road).

I would expect most split squads to look pretty thin on defence. I mean, even with our incredible depth, we're still starting 6/7 defencemen or very young prospects who have never played in the NHL on our 2nd pairing.

I think the Oilers problem is the exact opposite of what you're saying. IMO, they have so many 4/5/6/7 defensemen, they can actually roll out some solid 2nd or 3rd pairing defensemen in split squad games. What's laughable to me is that you can't even tell what squad is better since they don't have any 1/2 defensemen that stand out.

This is what I was thinking as well and it seemed like it was what Hartley was also thinking. That top line was deadly last year but having Monahan and Gaudreau learn to do it without Hudler is probably a good thing for them and Hudler teaching Bennett could be really beneficial as well. If you can create two scoring lines this team would look really solid.

Hartley also said that the player-pairing experiments would be conducted during camp practices and scrimmages. Training camp did not just start today.

I just want to see him inundated with relentless hits every time he touches the puck. He doesn't have to drop the mitts to kick his ass. Do it clean and without taking yourself out of the game. Make Nurse not want to touch that puck. Make all of their defense not want the puck.

If, due to a flu outbreak or something, this was our opening day lineup, I think I could live with this as an NHL roster. Except for Smith, he's easily the worst current player in the group.

Gaudreau - Monahan - Ferland
Frolik - Bennet t- Hudler
Bouma - Backlund - Jones
Colborne - Stajan - Bollig

Is how I see the opening fwd group. Raymond, Byron, Shore, Bollig, Granlund are going to be in a dog fight for that last spot. Raymond I'd like to see move on. I like Byron as a 13th guy, he can slot in almost anywhere, but his time might be up unless he can show why he's above younger guys with more size. That's not to mention door-knockers like Poirier, Agostino, Arnold (how come he's not here? Did he get cut already?), who could Josh Jooris someone out of a job.

I'd like to see Wotherspoon, Nakladal, or maybe even a guy like Andersson, Wilson, Morrison take over for Engelland. Perhaps an outside shot at Sieloff. I had high hopes for him initially, but he may have been just too derailed.

Not that I think Engelland is bad, just want to hope for better possibilities I guess.

I wouldn't mind this:

Gaudreau-Monahan-Hudler (don't break up a good thing).
Bouma-Bennett-Colborne/Jones (offensive/defensive balance - give Colborne the nod if it looks like he and Bennett might click)
Byron/Jooris/Granlund- Backlund-Colborne/Jones (Checking line)
Ferland/Raymond-Stajan-Shore/Bollig/Poirier, etc

Everyone wants Raymond gone, but I could see a comeback year. The big issue is that he's never been good enough defensively, so he's either got to be sheltered with Bennett or a 4th line guy.

I think the game has caught up to Raymond. In the past, he was one of the fastest guys in the game. So much so that he could literally burn around those few dmen on each team with insufficient footspeed. I think those players have largely been weeded out, and the overall speed has increased to the point that Raymond's best weapon just isn't as much of a stand out anymore, and everything else he did was just average.

Not a fan of him and think the emergence guys like Ferland and the move to bring in Frolik makes him an odd man out, and too expensive to be so. I hope we can find a way to trade him. He's a serviceable guy, but this team doesn't need him.
