...the star defenceman made what the hospital is calling "the biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history."

Wow. Incredible generosity by PK Subban. After reading the horrible news of the little girl murdered recently, I felt this needed to be mentioned to show some good still exists in this world.

This guy is awesome. I love what he's doing for hockey and for his community, one way or another people are going to know about him and that's good for hockey as a whole. I've always liked this kid and I think he's a future captain of the habs and should be a lock on team Canada.

Gio is still better.

Following in the footsteps of a few other former Habs. 20 years ago, Patrick Roy wrote a $500,000 cheque to the Montreal Children's the day he was traded to Colorado. Saku Koivu helped raise $8 million for a PET/CT scanner for Montreal General Hospital. Well done, gentlemen. :):)

Pretty tough to dismiss something that substantial as a publicity stunt. Classy move.

The kid has 10-15 years to make big money, which could be ended at any time and he just gave away a very large chunk of his take home income.

If it was a publicity stunt than he deserves any positive publicity he wants.

It always aggravates me how much athletes spend on their ridiculous lifestyles. The twitter pictures from Vegas of 200K bar tabs, the multiple sports cars, gambling, etc.

These athletes deserve the money they earn. It's simple economics. And, they deserve the right to spend it however they wish. But, it's frustrating to see the ridiculous lifestyles and bankruptcies.

PK just set an huge example for athletes among all sports. I hope they notice and follow his actions.

Tax deduction or no tax deduction

A: the hospital gets the money regardless of how much taxes PK saves.
B: the tax rate in QC is insane, so even after it's factored in, he's still way down compared to other players around the league.

PK Subban is awesome.

Not to get too off-topic, but PK just donated 14% of his net worth (based solely on this current $72M contract) to charity.

Murray Edwards et al. have offered to contribute 1% of his $2.2B net worth towards CalgaryNEXT - which they intend to profit from

Interesting counter balance (I know it is not apples-to-apples)

Any attempt to minimize such a substantial donation by even referencing a tax deduction is absolutely wrong IMO. The guy is donating 14% of his salary over the next 7 years. That exceeds the generosity of 99.9% of citizens out there. Plus you have the fact that he makes his living in a field known for short careers. Give him all the tax deductions and publicity he wants. If it makes more athletes behave this way, all the better.

I have to applaud PK for this. 14% of his current contract and over $1M/yr is no spare change. This needs to be the new benchmark for professional sports players, and I hope other see what PK has done.

What amazes me at most is he decided to do this at the age of 26. I know we all like to say he does some immature things on the ice but only a select few in the world have committed that much at such a young age.

So, scoring at home, I come up with:

PK: 10,000,000
Racists: 0

So having defeated racism hands down, let's see if PK can settle Canada's linguistic divide with some of his endorsement cheques.

Or maybe he'll leave that for one of his brothers (I thought Jordan played surprisingly well at Young Stars).

I'm not sure you can compare the two as I'm not sure PK hasn't actually donated any specific amount of money. Is he going to give $10 million cash himself? Or has he just made a pledge of $10 million to be fulfilled over the next seven years through a personal donation (no word on how much), contributions from his foundation (i.e. money raised from other people) and the use of his name and brand in fund raising (again money raised from other people). I'm sure a tax accountant can chime in but the donation of 10 M after tax is significantly more than a years salary. The donations are probably staggered over a course of time, but don't lessen the donation by any extent.

10 MILL over 5 years is 2 mill a year. Subban must earn 2,800,000 each year to make the payment or approx 14,000,000 less the charitable tax donation allowable in Canada.

As I recall Charity tax deduction is around 10 - 15% of what you give.

It's a staggering, generous move to make for someone of his age. It's after tax dollars being donated unless the amount being quoted is pre-tax.

Still staggering.

This article suggests he is not donating $10 million of his own money. You need to read between the lines. The article in the first post indicated the donation is being made through his Foundation. There's a reason for that. This Montreal Gazette article makes the actual arrangement quite a bit clearer. (http://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/p-k-subban-makes-significant-donation-to-childrens-hospital)

The $10 million is a combination of a personal donation from Subban — in the seven-figure range — as well as funds from the P.K. Subban Foundation and fundraising activities using his name and brand over the next seven years.

This doesn't diminish what he's doing. Although the full $10 million won't be coming out of his pocket, he is the individual who will make it all happen.

Remember he gets paid in U.S. dollars so the conversion to the crappy Canadian dollar helps a lot. Saying that it's still a lot of money.

Canadiens have to feel pretty damn happy to have this guy on their team. Wonderful ambassador to the team and the game.

Whether you like him or not the NHL needs more players like Subban. I like him but I would like him a lot more if he didn't play for such a detested organization.

They should be very happy. It's one thing to donate money, but actually putting in the time with the kids is amazing. Canadiens and the NHL are lucky to have guys like this representing them.

The rabid fans here are crazy though. There is some grumbling (no, not much, but definitely some) that PK should be spending more time focussed on hockey and less time with his charity work.
That is what losing 9 of 10 does for you in Montreal

Seems to me that PK parents did an outstanding job raising him, and that PK really gets it.

Good for all involved.

Pk being Pk. Say what you want about him on the ice. He is a true class act. As I began to tear up, I realized its hard to hate this guy.

Great job PK!

Subban certainly loves the spotlight and he's chosen to have it shine on him for great reasons. What an excellent role model.

Wow. That video was tugging at the heart strings. Can't believe the Hockey media tried to portray P.K as a hooligan in the N.H.L. in his early career.

The only part that threw me off was the tear jerking moment with the family that lost their house in a fire. I guess the big American viral stories of people getting things replaced had me expecting too much in this video.

I mean, I knew it wouldn't be like "Hey, we bought you a $500k house" or anything, but I guess I had prepared for more than "Here's $5k to help you out". Still amazing, I'm not trying to take away from what he did here, I guess it was just my stupid viral video watching habits that got me too pumped up for that moment.

PK is what the Flames needed Dion to be. Their first 3 year are very similar. Subsequent years have proven PK to have both a personality and coachability.
