Thanks, I was just about to create this thread myself since I'm eager to talk about this match-up.

Looks like Vancouver is sending out their A-team for this one. Should be a more even matchup.

I'm eager to see what Roy can do. You know he's going to be fighting for a contract, but the Flames probably want to see if his defensive game has progressed enough. Wouldn't be surprised to see him hit the scoresheet with the offense that guy has put up in the WHL though.

Probably the same reason they aren't dressing Bennett. It wouldn't be a fair fight.

I'm liking the Mangiapane-Arnold-Poirier line. Mangiapane has played well and looks to be getting rewarded for it.

Since the rookie camp the way this kid carries himself and the way he plays has been nothing short of impressive (considering where he was picked too).

I'm not saying anything right now but this kid should have gone higher in the draft if he continues to improve.

I saw a couple posters on this board hoping we could pick up Mangiapane in round 3/4.

He's been terrific so far but it shouldn't be too surprising for a guy that finished top 10 in OHL scoring this past year.

The surprising thing is how he fell to round 6 IMO

This is what I see when I look at Vancouver's lineup.

Its like when you're a kid and you buy a bunch of packets of hockey cards and open them up and each new card creates a new level of dissapointment as the unknown players smile up at you and you mutter

Crap, crap, garbage, crap, crap.

And then you breath excitedly because you get a card for a player that at least you know (shinkaruk) for example and you mutter

Mega crap

Followed by more crap crap crap

But hey at least you got a bunch or really subpar gum.

They brought 11 defencemen to the tournament. None of them are playing in all three games. 7 are getting 2 games each, and the other 4 are getting 1 game.

Andersson, Kulak, Culkin, and Kanzig have already played their 2, so they get today off.

I don't think so. He was drafted as a 19 year-old, so if he signed, his contract can only slide for one year. If he doesn't sign, the Flames own his rights unsigned for two years.

Plus two sliding deals (McDonald and Kylington) if they don't play 10 NHL games this season.

Actually...With Andersson's signing just announced, it's now 48 with three sliders.

The sliding deals don't count towards the 50 contract limit until the player plays his 10th NHL game.

There is a ton of coaching and systems that need to be developed with this 3 on 3 overtime. I can't imagine we will see too many of the third men in going deeper than the top of the circle. That seemed very risky and it ended up with a breakaway for vancouver.

Complete lack of effort from Roy there, both in Vancouver's end at the beginning of the play, letting Virtanen get away. Then even worse at the end, just giving up and letting Virtanen go.

Kylington best Dman by far. Looked pretty sound defensively too besides the offensive upside. Lightning fast and smooth. Crisp passes too. I think we have three A prospects on D with Andersson and Hickey.

Rest of dmen turning over the puck way too much. Seiloff running out of time.

I liked Morrisson RH point shot but he is not ready for NHL yet. There is potential there though.

Offensively, Poirier is starting to worry me. No finish around net. Did he get any points in this tournament? I do not see him cracking the Flames lineup yet.

Arnold solid (NHL time likely this year).

Mangiapane always creating something out there (fantastic 6th rounder).

Klimchuk not that noticable but has a quick shot. AHL for sure.

Don't take a rookie tournament too seriously. These are the first games these guys are playing without one practice on the ice as a team. Poirier had a very solid rookie season in the AHL last year. No points in this tournament doesn't mean he suddenly has no finish.

I have to agree with the assessment of Roy. Guy just doesn't seem to have anything I'd want in a defenseman. He's big, but skates worse than Kanzig. He might have a good shot, but he'll never get it off when you need him to. He makes horrible decisions in his own zone and doesn't seem to ever know where his man is. Not to mention absolutely no hustle whatsoever. The guy just doesn't seem to have his heart in playing hockey. Offering the tryout was the right move to see what he could do in terms of summer training, but I see absolutely no point in even giving him an AHL deal if that's what he has to offer.

After watching Carroll I really want him to make the Flames in 2 or 3 seasons, lots to like there. Is he AHL bound?

Fun tournament but nothing to get worked up about. Since guys upped their stock but I didn't see too many drop.

Bruce will definitely be going back to junior. I suspect he'll be in the first round of cuts. He just turned 18 in July, so he's still very young. He needs to add some bulk to that beanpole body of his.

Carroll will be going pro, either ECHL or AHL. He should start in Stockton.

Most shocking thing for me after watching this game was the pronounciation of Kylington.

Happy to see Klimchuk score (and not just an EN goal). He probably won't be a real flashy prospect in terms of high end skill but if he can combine above average skating with good hockey sense and a great shot he could be a keeper.

It's fun watching a glimpse of what the future may hold... even better considering two of our better prospects aren't even here (Jankowski and Hickey)...

Seems like everybody seems to agree that Mangiapane was fantastic. I know its only rookie camp, but if he carries this through to pre-season and into pro? Mangiapane might be that other top line LWer to fill in. I'm dreaming of something like :

Mangiapane - Bennett - Poirer
Gaudreau - Monahan - ?Klimchuk?
Ferland / Bouma - Jankowski - ?Frolik?

Dang that could be a pretty sweet top 9. Mangiapane was a little buzz saw all over the creating waives. Just like Bennett. And Poirer. That could be a line that plays against McDavid every night for the next 10 years. /dreaming

Mangiapane over Gaudreau on the top line. That is dreaming. :) Reasonable expectations for Mangiapane would be for him to become a Byron type player. I think he'll have a hard time producing points at the NHL level.

It's as crazy as Brandon Saad over Patrick Kane on the top line.

My idea runs from a somewhat older idea that you keep 2 pairs together and rotate the 3rd on a line to "mix things up" if a player is in a slump. The 2 obvious tandoms I see are Bennett-Poirer and Gaudreau-Monahan.

It would be pretty slick if Bennett-Poirer took on the tough matchups and other teams top D, leaving Gaudreau-Monahan to face softer minutes.

Gaudreau and Monahan on the second line would be the best second line in the NHL.
