Just thought I'd share a little from the event this evening.
Wall of text coming:
Proceeds to the Ronald McDonald house.
I didn't have much exposure to the program before this, but I came away from the event really getting a sense for how important and worthy an organization it is for families with sick kids.
As a parent it was impactful to hear about others who have needed their support.
Sat beside Matt Stajan as our celebrity. Hell of a good guy, has had a tough run but you can tell he's a real family man and cares about the Flames and the city of Calgary.
Here are the current Flames players that were there:
Stajan, Colborne, Russell, Smid, Ferland, Raymond
You can tell that the guys that live in Calgary all year round are a tight group, lots of laughs and good jabs at each other.
Smid is looking healthy and says he is ready to go, so looks like there really is a logjam on the back end. Smid is a big guy.
Guys were pretty surprised that Flames hadn't signed Schlemko (yet), I guess they must think highly of him.
Ferland is not nearly as big in person as he appears on the ice.
The guys were more willing to talk about the team and hockey than I would have expected.
General thoughts were that Van was on the way down and LA or SJ up, it was cool to hear the players be open about the other teams and players in this setting.
Lots of Jerseys on display for the silent auction, despite rough economic times, you wouldn't know it. Bidding was high on all the silent auction stuff, and live auctions.
My fave moment was Stajan taking pics of all the silent auction jerseys and the amounts and then texting them to the guys that weren't there to chirp at who was in last place.
Most of the team had a jersey there, lowest one I saw was Bouma, which I thought was odd. Obviously the guys there had higher bids, but Gio was pretty high.
Anyways... Pretty slow for Flames news, so thought I'd share my experience. Had a great time, but got knocked out of poker by Rae Croteau in second round.
