Briere played for the Avalanche? Huh.

I thought he retired while still playing for Montreal. Sure looked that way.

He was always fun to watch in the playoffs but I think he's been on the decline for a while now. Wasn't he traded from the habs to the avs for parenteau or something like that?

Either way, I wish him the best.

His $6.5M per contract has run out and probably no new offers say, yeah I guess it's time to retire.

It got bought out after six years. He did all right on that deal - factoring in the buyout payment, he made $50.333M out of $52M (he's still getting paid $833,333 the next two seasons) - and in the bought out seasons, he earned $8M ($4M AAV), which is $3M total more than he would have made from the bought out contract.

One of the most effective playoffs player that I have ever seen....

Briere always turned into a beast in the playoffs and therefore is one of those players who absolutely would have deserved to win a cup IMO ... 116 points in 124 NHL playoffs games, that's not too shabby. Too bad it was never quite enough for him.

Hell of a player. Also a smaller guy who had to fight to get where he was. People talk about his overstuffed contract with the Flyers, but he mostly lived up to it.

He seems to have so much going on in his personal life, no surprise his NHL play dropped a bit.
