Boy this one feels good. It's been a long time coming beating these guys. First game in a long time where you can say a Flames goaltender stole one. This is the type of goaltending the Flames need more of for this team to have a chance at making the playoffs. I would hope that Treliving is shopping Ramo to some of these teams in need of a goaltender as I think Ortio can handle the backup job and in return the Flames can hopefully add another pick or two for the draft.

Great win after last night, goes without saying.

Also, every game I don't hear them call, I appreciate Ball and Hrudey more. Randorf should be doing regional games at best, in addition to seemingly want teams behind to come back and slanting the commentary that way.

...and the Flames of Calgary triumphed over the Canucks of Vancouver by pushing the rubber disk into the netting with the stick of Backlund and not allowing it to happen at all in the netting behind their own large man wearing the mask. It was a most ripping victory.

Superb effort, simply superb. Every one to a man got stuck in tonight. Played a physical game, finished their checks, had some chances of our own which we could have buried. A truly superb effort from everyone, especially Ortio. He was so solid, gave up no rebounds, handled it well and was our best player tonight. So happy, suck it Nucks!

Can go into the rest of the road trip full of confidence.

Love the way Backs has played since his return. He seems to be developing some chemistry with Gaudreau and makes me wonder why we don't have Hudler on the same line.

Ortio looked very composed for his first game of the year. Didn't give the Cannots too many rebounds.

Canucks looked like a frustrated hockey team. Couldn't generate that many chances and even the sisters had trouble with their patented cycle game.

On the rare occasions when I can treat myself to a real hot dog or a smokie, I assure you, nothing goes on there but sauerkraut, onions, and the finest mustard. It is pure bliss for me; not so much for anyone standing downwind.

I would still hang on to both till the end of the season before I make any decisions with the goal tending. It ebbs and flows with those two. I'm still not sure if Hiller is actually better than Ramo or not since Ramos a little younger.

To be fair if you add in all the blocked shots it was a shooting gallery. The only difference was some Kipperesque goaltending. Throw in Hiller or Ramo and I have a feeling we would of lost a close one. Ortio really was the difference here.

You know ketchup is made from sub par tomatoes right? They are tomatoes you can't slice up and serve. Ketchup is made from tomatoes that are about to be spoiled . That's why they use the Tomatoes in this form of a gastrique ( vinegar sauce)

Every win against Vancouver is a glorious occasion justifying celebration, but the Flames will need much better efforts on their upcoming road trip to drag themselves back into a playoff spot.

It's becoming sooo f'n frustrating to watch the Flames break out of their own zone by either (a) blowing the zone for the long bomb if they have control, or (b) just predictably chipping to puck along the boards where a defenseman can easily pinch in to disrupt the breakout. It's resulting in the Flames rarely moving through the neutral zone with speed.

I hate to say it, but the Canucks breakout as a 5 man group, with plenty of puck support, is so much more efficient and conducive to creating rush chances.

Oh, and F'N WIDEMAN !! I must say that 10 times per game. His poor passing and penchant for meekly going back for pucks that inevitably leads to a loss of possession is infuriating. The Flames need to find a better defenseman to play with Russell.

You know ketchup is made from sub par tomatoes right? They are tomatoes you can't slice up and serve. Ketchup is made from tomatoes that are about to be spoiled . That's why they use the Tomatoes in this form of a gastrique ( vinegar sauce)

Actually, ketchup is made from tomatoes that are perfectly all right at the time, but won't last long enough to be shipped across the country by truck.

The same kind of thing goes on with other produce. In Costa Rica, I used to get the finest bananas you ever tasted for three cents a pound, because they would not survive shipping. Only the tough, gross, green bananas were long-lasting enough to survive a two-week trip on a banana boat. The good bananas had to be eaten right there in the country.

And now for a smooth segue: Tough bananas, Vancouver!

Yea, you should take the night off after this one from earlier today:

The Canucks outplayed the Flames just as much as they had during the 9 game losing streak to them, this time they just ran into a Flames goaltender able to steal a game. It was still a painful game to watch for long stretches of time, with Calgary's really poor puck possession and abysmal PP. But if you feel like gloating, good on you I guess

Not sure why lots of people expected the Flames to be embarrassed

Don't get me wrong, I love that the Flames won tonight, but going into this one it was hard not expect an embarrassment.

They put up a cluster#### of a game last night
They had a late night travelling to Vancouver
They were in a 9 game losing streak in Vancouver
They were starting their third stringer who spent almost two days in travel hell to get to the game.

It was the recipe for a disastrous game. I'm fairly positive when it comes to this team, but this had the makes of a bloodbath.

I hope Jonas Hiller was paying attention on how to play goal. :) Good on Kipper Jr. for getting the shutout. I love his poised and control. I didn't think I've seen any rebound by Canucks player.

Complete turnaround by the whole team. Very discipline, not a lot of turnover and they were skating all night. Another goal by Backlund, Flames just need to get Monahan in scoring department. All 3 players who didn't play last night Bollig, Diaz and Ortio was good tonight. Bollig had one scoring chance and one block. Diaz was more mobile than Smid and of course Ortio with a shutout. It looks like Mason Raymond is going to be on rotation for healthy scratch from now on until he started playing better. Anyways good game and that's the type of game they should play every game...skate, skate, skate and tons of forechecking. No penalty at all which is good.

Just love annoying my friend who is a Canuck fan. Everytime Canucks is winning against the Flames he always text me and rubbed it in. I thought it's my turn to rub it in. Asked him if he saw a minor league goaltender shut out his almighty Canucks. Texted me and says..I didn't watch the game..which I thought it is BS. Funny whenever they lose, he never watch the game.. LOL Typical Canuck fan.

Can't believe the Flames hung onto a early 1-0 goal all game for the win.

Just watching Ortio's quickness and alertness, even in the first period for me inspired a kind of relaxed confidence I haven't felt all season with a lead. I got called out in the game thread for jumping the gun, and all that, and that's fair enough, but what I was seeing in front of the net was a goaltender giving his team a chance.

I say this as someone who does think, despite last night's debacle, that Hiller has been solid enough for us (and the better of him and Ramo even considering Ramo's little win streak), and on most nights when our scoring is clicking is a good goaltender. A good goaltender can win games when the team is playing well. A great goaltender can steal games, and while I wouldn't say Ortio "stole" a game we didn't deserve to win, he certainly stole the show tonight. Which is something I can't remember saying in the last two years. I'm all for trading one of our veteran goaltenders for a #4 D-man to help push Wideman into the 3rd pairing. Premature, one game, yadda yadda I get it. Ramo had some shutouts this year too, and I never felt like they were this kind of shutout, though.

Pumped for the win which brings us back into the hunt however I watched a different game than most of you.

Again, the PP is pretty bad and could elevate this team to the next level based on how many PPs we seem to generate.
Ortio players a great game and without it we could easily lose this 2-1 (badly out shot and out chanced)
I felt Wideman, Russel and Engeland struggled to make the simple plays and I really didnt think we generated much for quality offense.

My biggest gear grinder is the PP - Exclude the first 15 games and I am willing to bet we are near the bottom 5 PP% in the league. Watching other games I will be on the edge of my seat for a PP. With the flames as of late I could turn my back for 20 seconds and know I missed a few attempts to get the puck to the point and then there was a shot from the point which most likely went wide and the puck was cleared.

Anyway, enough debby downer. Ride Ortio while he is hot and give Hiller time to get his stuff together.

I don't think this stuff is Debbie Downer at all--if we are going to take the next step, we need to have a consistent and effective powerplay. You are bang on with that.

With respect to the three D-men you list, my thought is that Russell is probably more a #4 D-Man, who needs a more consistent partner. Wideman plays somewhere between Phil Housley the first time around, and Phil Housley the second time around.

And we need to improve the bottom pairing. As weird as it sounds, I'd be willing to keep Diaz around as 6/7, but jettison Engelland, and--as much as it pains me--Smid.

So, good win for sure, but bigger picture-wise, you are right to suggest these as key improvements to be made!

Just back from the game!
Haven't read any game thread or post game thread stuff to taint my opinion yet so here are some random takes from me:

- backlund and Johnny look pretty good together so far. Not sure what jones was doing on that line but looks like similar chemistry for Johnny and mikael as Johnny and hudler

- bouma had a ton of good hits, thought he played well

- thought that both granlund and Wideman were terrible tonight. Making bad decisions constantly and fanning on the puck a lot

- Ortio was obviously awesome. Some luck but about 10 mins into the third I was wondering if it was destined to be (it was)

- don't know what happened to Smid but I'm sure I'll read about it soon

- my sister who knows nothing about the flames and hockey said 'Calgary is really good at sacrificing their bodies' I said yup #1 in nhl

- overall very exciting and nerve wracking game for a 1-0 and we definitely didn't deserve to win but there were a lot of dejected Canucks fans there and I will take the W and run!

What a great game to be at. I can't remember the last game in Vancouver where Calgary won. Seahawks fans are as annoying as canucks fans. Most are both and are doubly annoying.

Mostly bandwagoners too.

There's something about that area of the world and being fairweather fans. Not sure what. Maybe something in the water.

What's so special about it?

It's not so vinegary like heinz, and tastes way more natural. It's a little lumpy, not a shiny, perfect silicone like constancy like heinz. It also a more natural darker red. More tart, and less sweet. It's really good stuff, and Canadian ta boot.

I've converted quite a few people.

Ortio was simply awesome.

Backlund - I think you almost have to include him in the 'core' moving forward. Great attitude, awesome defensively, non-stop motor (seriously, does he ever stop skating hard at any point during a game?), and he DOES have offence. I think the Flames really missed him this year (especially the PK), and he really does a great job solidifying the lineup.

I like Gaudreau with Backlund. I think they compliment their respective games - especially their skating ability. I think Hudler should be kept with Monahan for a little while to help spark his offence again (though really, I just think Monahan is just barely snakebitten - he has a great shot and has had great chances, just haven't gone in).

Really sweet to beat the Nucks in their rink... finally! Though there were defensive breakdowns, it was reassuring to see the Flames win a game 1-0. Good teams win these close games, mediocre to bad teams lose the 6-5 games. Nice to see the quick turnaround, especially on a back-to-back.

As for Wideman - bet he takes a maintenance day. He didn't look the same after that shot. They were commenting on it during the game, and I think they were right. The way he seemed to have a tougher time turning was very noticeable. For all the flack Wideman takes, I would seriously hate to see Smid, Engelland or Diaz bumped to the 2nd pairing.

Nice try by Granlund doing the 'Sedin' - holding a stick and wrapping it around his body. The Sedins were the masters of that cheap move, and Bouwmeester was a victim on more than one occasion. Hopefully he doesn't try that again - it is just so 'Canuck' to do it.

Lastly - screw Burrows. Guy is a <Roger Millions' expletive>. Hope Giordano pounds on him next game. Guy continues to be a someone you just enjoy watching taking a beating.

Great win after last night, goes without saying.

Also, every game I don't hear them call, I appreciate Ball and Hrudey more. Randorf should be doing regional games at best, in addition to seemingly want teams behind to come back and slanting the commentary that way.

I thought it was Paul Romanuk. Still sub par compared to our guys either

If Wideman was hurt enough to miss a game or two, I'd bet that Wotherspoon will get called up to take his spot rather than bumping up any of the bottom 3.

Speaking of Detroit. The two best Chili dog restraunts in the state reside there. Both are located next to one another. They were two brothers that fought over the chili recipe so each brother opened a store next door to each other to see who was better. They originally opened 100 years ago and remain extremely busy.

Some canucks fans:

Pisses me off that the Flames can just pick him in the 4th round and he might win the Calder this year.

Why the **** do we never get this?

If he was taller and bigger, he could be a guy who would put up 60 goals and 120+ Points imo.

His vision is elite, same with his playmaking.

Flames have four D with more points than our highest scoring defender.

I haven't seen a rookie look as competent or be able to generate offense single-handedly like Gaudreau since Ovechkin. That [haters gon hate] is dangerous every shift.

What frustrates me the most is that in this team I don't see a future.

Tarasenko and Foresberg aside. Monahan and Gaudreau pf Calgary, Nyquist and Tatar of Detroit...

Like, what should I be expecting of the young talents of our team?

Tonight was insane the way the puck was just fluttering around bouncing like a tennis ball. Makes it tough going up against a stifling defensive team like the Flames when the puck is erratically ping ponging around the ice like that, tough to make crisp plays to really break things down.

It was late in the game on Friday.

I think Hartley was trying to get Monahan going offensively, first by putting him with Hudler and Gaudreau on Friday, then with Hudler and Glencross on Saturday.

To really get him going, it might be time to bring back the Sven and Sean show from the start of last season. I believe Sven is still one of the most-productive linemates Monahan has had in a season and a half and he's back in the groove in Adirondack right now.

Well after Shore, I think Sven should be the next call up if he keeps it up. But I'd still give him some more time. I want to see him being productive for a good, long stretch of games.

I would almost like to see Byron waived and sent to Adirondack along with Granlund and have the whole line of Shore, Sven, and Poirier recalled just to reward them for their elite play down there of late.

The Flames middle lines could use some shaking up.

Shore and elite? Sven is miles ahead of him in terms of skill and speed.

He's tied for 13th in the entire AHL in points, and 6th for players 24 and under. Shore is an upper tier AHL player. He might only be a depth forward at the NHL level, but he is an elite AHLer at the moment.

Your hatred of him seems over the top for no real reason.

Ortio was great. What really impressed me was how solid he was 'standing his ground' when the puck was in the crease.

Hiller is a decent goalie but every time there's a downlow in the crease play I get scared. I wonder what the stats are on Hiller - what area of the ice are most goals that are scored on him from? I'd guess a lot of them are from in tight, where he just seems to be a spaghetti noodle. Also, teams are very prone to taking shots from the side and behind the net on Hiller. He's not very strong at hugging the post.

I'm not saying Ortio is the answer - it's been one game. However, something's gotta give here. Our goaltending has to be sharper if we're going to make the playoffs.

Speaking of ketchup, I nearly spilt my dinner on Oakes earlier in the night. It was an Ortio like save to have avoided it.

Sadly, I missed most of the game. Had a great few of the duct work over the dressing rooms though.

You're spot on - I mentioned last night in the GT that Ortio's ability to find loose pucks and corral rebounds is such that the whistle is already blowing while I'm looking for where the puck went. I have Rob Kerr-like "Where is it?!" moments of panic when it happens with Hiller in net.

For a smallish goalie, he holds his ground very well vs goal crashers.
