From 4 years ago. What gets me everytime is the Nesbitt race at around the 50 second min mark. Great call from Rod Smith. The crowd goes nuts, and so does the Mom...but the Dad pats his wife on the shoulder, and barely cracks a smile. Like a boss.
Even after all the family sacrifice and watching/supporting his daughter race for a decade to get to this moment, he continues to be the rock. As proud and as excited as he can be for his daughter, yet holds all that emotion in and doesn't get overcome with emotion in that moment when it would be really really easy to, instead, just a proud smile and a nod.
LG1bQ9gUglE
From 1998, finally, finally found the beauty goal Rob Zaumner scored from a great fake from Gretzky and pure skill from Sakic @1:22 mark...so it goes here too for rarity's sake.
cffgskKGkJk
Lastly, the 1992 shootout vs the Germans. Highlighted for Lindros with the winner, and the final German shooter getting it through Burke, but the puck stopping on the line. Remember watching that in highschool.

I remember at the freestyle national championships a few years back one of the women (even though she was probably 15 or 16) who did a pretty basic run but landed her tricks, finished pretty low (like 10th) and the announcers said "just to show how far the sport has come, that was the exact same run that Jean-Luc Brassard won gold with in '94".
Though they weren't allowed inverted tricks back then, that is pretty cool.

When Joannie did her free skate, I was having dinner in Vancouver in Yaletown. Everyone in the restaurant stopped what they were doing, from the staff to the patrons, to watch her skate. You could hear a pin drop. When she landed that final double combination and then finished her performance, the whole place started cheering and gave her a standing ovation. It still gives me goosebumps thinking about it. What a moment.

Absolutely. There's something about the Olympics and when your country has "The Moment". You might not normally watch a sport, but you're drawn in because of the bigger picture. It's so special.

Awesome to see how Canada has grown since hosting the games here in Calgary in 1988. The facilities in Calgary, plus the Own The Podium program that was implemented prior to Vancouver has really helped establish Canada as a Winter Olympic power.
1984: 4 Medals (2-1-1)
1988: 5 Medals (0-2-3)
1992: 7 Medals (2-3-2)
1994: 13 Medals (3-6-4)
1998: 15 Medals (6-5-4)
2002: 17 Medals (7-3-7)

While true, also keep in mind that the Winter Games have grown far faster than the summer ones in terms of new sports added. Canada is getting more medals in recent games partly because there's simply a lot more sports to get them in

Another big factor is that they've added a bunch of "new" sports to the Olympics since 1988 that either weren't in Calgary, or were exhibition sports in Calgary.
Freestyle skiing, snowboarding, short track, skeleton, curling, women's bobsleigh, and women's hockey are all sports in which Canada won medals in Vancouver that weren't full medal events in Calgary.
If you look at Canada's medal haul from Vancouver and take out all the sports that weren't in Calgary, the count would be 3 gold, 1 silver, 4 bronze. Half of those are in speed skating; 2 are in figure skating; one for 4-man bobsleigh; and men's hockey is the other.
So far this year, none of Canada's medals are in sports that were held in Calgary.

This shouldn't discount our achievments...I personally think its terrible how much attention Norway is getting for their program, but if you drill down you notice there are 23 medal opportunities in cross country/biathalon. It's a "classic", but its also their national sport; it's completely unsurprising that Norway has done as well as it has at the olympics with the medals skewed that way.
Also instead of complaining Own the Podium should arm every farm kid that can shoot with a pair of skis and change the hunting rules to give out tags that you can do it in the winter as long as you're on cross country skis when you make the shot. :)

Just watched Ron chat with the moguls team, and Alex said that he donates used skis and equipment to the Russians and Kazakhs because they don't usually have enough equipment to train with.
All joking aside. That right there is the epitome of sportsmanship

Quick! Opportunity for media generated controversy! Ask all qc athletes who they'd ski for if quebec separated
It looks like they've already started. I just read this on the Toronto Star:
If Quebec were a separate country, it would currently stand fourth on the Sochi medal table, tied with U.S. and Russia.
The six medals they’ve won in only four days here would already qualify as the 9th best total medal haul in Canadian Winter Olympic history.
After he won his medal in the mountains (http://www.thestar.com/sports/sochi2014/skiing/2014/02/10/alex_bilodeau_wins_gold_for_canada_mikael_kingsbur y_captures_silver_in_mens_moguls_at_sochi_olympics .html), Bilodeau was baited on this topic (by a British journo, natch). Did he realize how well Quebec could do here on its own?
Right when the rest of us really needed him, Bilodeau didn’t flinch.
“We’re proud to be Quebecer, but we’re proud to be Canadian,” he said. “Yes, we do a lot of good things in Quebec, but there are great things all across Canada.”
I like Bilodeau. Someone brought it up in another thread but it's worth bringing up again. I think he should be the flag bearer in the closing ceremonies.

What a ######-y question.

Here is a breakdown of athletes by province:
Ontario – 64 athletes (29%)
Alberta – 56 athletes (25%)
Quebec – 43 athletes (19%)
B.C. – 27 athletes (12%)
Saskatchewan – 14 athletes (6%)
Manitoba – 10 athletes (5%)
N.W.T. – 2 athletes (1%)
Nova Scotia – 2 athletes (1%)
Newfoundland – 1 athlete
P.E.I. – 1 athlete
Yukon – 1 athlete
Ontario, Albert and Quebec make up 73% of the athletes we send to the games. I am really proud that there are so many Albertan's there. Obviously, a lot has to do with the facilities being located here. It is also great for Quebec to pulling far above their weight.
I don't have a problem with Quebec winning medals for the whole of Canada. I am sure there are some athletes with separatist tendencies, but for the most part, I think these people want to be part of Canada and represent this country as a whole. Anyone that wants to be a part of Canada I welcome as brothers. Everyone I've seen win have been over the moon excited, and I've seen them interviewed on CBC and they seem like genuine Canadians.
Also, one other thing to consider is these Quebec athletes spend a lot of time in Alberta and other parts of the world competing. I think it is easy for them to understand how great it is to be Canadian.

lol, it's cute that some Quebecers think they would have money to support athletes without the rest of Canada.
I guess there's always a way to ruin everything.

In true Olympic spirit, Canada’s head cross-country ski coach Justin Wadsworth (http://globalnews.ca/tag/justin-wadsworth/) rushed to help a Russian skier after the athlete crashed in the semi-final of the men’s freestyle sprint and broke one of his skis.
Cross-country skier Anton Gafarov (http://globalnews.ca/tag/Anton-Gafarov) tumbled on the course for the third time Tuesday as he was heading down the hill toward the finish line. With a new ski in hand, Wadsworth rushed toward the struggling athlete and fixed the new ski to Gafarov’s ski boot.

I posted some of this in the daily thread but I think it belongs here too (and everywhere else I post). We didn't win a medal in Women's slopestyle, but the event nonetheless belonged to Sarah Burke. RIP Sarah, we miss you.
http://i.imgur.com/1y57IW0.png
(Photo of winner's podium taken from Judges booth, where the sticker was on the window throughout the competition)
Sarah inspired us on snow and off snow, and i think she would have been really proud of how all the girls rode tonight. I sure hope that I and everyone else made her proud, because we would not be here without her... Meeting her was the coolest moment of my life.
The first time she met Sarah, she was off by herself. Sarah saw that she was by herself and brought her over, introduced herself and brought her into the group. It was pretty amazing.
I don’t think we would be here without her. Halfpipe has got to where it is because of her. The Olympics is bittersweet. It is awesome to be here, but she should be here too.
Marie Martinod quit professional skiing seven years ago. She had a daughter and got a job at a nightclub back home in France. About three years ago, Burke came to visit to ask her to un-retire and re-join the competition circuit so that she could be in the olympics. Today, she won a silver medal.
I came back to compete at the Olympic Games because one night Virginie Faivre and Sarah Burke came to my place and told me that halfpipe is going to be in the Olympics for sure, you have to come. I said, 'You're kidding me, that's nonsense, I'll never be able to do it.' But then I thought I can't watch it on the couch on television.
I think I didn't say goodbye to Sarah yet, and I still have to do it. Now I feel like I'm able to do it, because I did what she asked me to do when I last saw her two years ago.

Who's your co-worker? Might be I know her. Yeah there was a lot of "I Ski for Sarah" stickers going around at the time, I have a couple left over somewhere.
The reason they didn't allow it is that they basically lump it in with other political statements. It's not that they object to remembering people but they don't want to have to go to the trouble of vetting every sticker or symbol people want to wear to make sure it's not a political statement. Team Canada knew beforehand that those wouldn't be allowed. Still sucks, but really, there was no lack of recognition given to Sarah in these games. Her name was mentioned over the loudspeaker by the guys calling the action more than any other athlete, she's talked about in every interview, and for good reason: all the girls know that this is because of her. Not just the olympics, but women's skiing. When Sarah started there was no Women's Halfpipe. She made it happen.

That chart above sums up the reason why the NHL has no interest in being in the Olympics unless they are prime time NA games. Not much coverage going on in the US.

Yet the USA-Russia game was the most watched hockey game ever on NBCSN

Being the most ever watched hockey game on NBCSN doesn't really mean much. First it's not the main network, second it's comparing hockey to hockey. The NHL isn't trying to leverage the Olympics to beat there already less than stellar tv ratings in the US

And since hockey was already shown live and spoiled, there wasn't a minute of it on the primetime show last night.
It was an hour of Mikaela Shiffin and then a bunch of short track speed skating
