A landlord who rents strip-mall space to a body-rub business doesn’t want a new baby store moving in nearby because it could hurt the adults-only business, according to an appeal filed with the city.
In a letter Nov. 6 to the city’s subdivision and development appeal board, the property owner says the Two Mothers baby store at 9553 76th Ave. will likely draw mothers and young children to the strip mall. And that could put the body-rub business in conflict with future city rules, since the city is concerned about kids being close to adults-only businesses, says the appeal from P. Thomson.
The city has a freeze on issuing new body-rub business licences until Jan. 31. City council approved a seven-month moratorium on new body-rub parlours in June.

Don't ever change Edmonton.

Just because you pay the $10 extra for the tub instead of the shower it is still called a rub and tug UCB.

Didn't something similar happen here in Calgary just a while ago where a daycare moved in next to or close to a rub n tug?

A massage parlour in the southeast community of Dover has been shut down because of links to prostitution, say Calgary police. . . .“If you can imagine, there was a business operating as a daycare 100 feet from this massage parlour where prostitution was taking place,” said Stuart.

That strip mall brings back such good memories about illegal activities as a kid. Glad to see that it is still keeping things going in my absence.

So even after reading the article I am not positive what a "body rub parlor" is. Is this a legal place to get a massage with a happy ending? If this is the case the city actually gives out permits for this?

I was under the impression that prostitution was actually legal in Canada. I thought it was a crime to solicit prostitution, ie. walk the streets offering yourself up for sex in exchange for money. Am I mistaken?

Did we just see you realize that you've been committing a crime all these years?

Prostitution IS legal in Canada, technically.

I'd love to hear a legal expert weigh in on this. I've always thought that living off the avails of prostitution, like being a pimp or madam, was illegal, but the actual exchange of money for sex was not technically illegal.

I think the way it works is that it's legal to be a prostitute, but illegal to be a John. I think the intent of the law is to protect prostitutes from illegal shake-downs by the police.

Oh edmonton. I remember visiting before I moved here. We went to a restaurant in a neighborhood where they had "john's will be reported" signs. I assume that the rub avec tug is illegal but it is so prevelent that the police try to regulate 'massage parlours' and turn a blind eye to whatever else happens. Anyone who has seen Fubar 2 knows why there is a big market for that. Not that this was featured in the film but those might be some of the individuals who might drive this grey market industry.

These are correct. You can't pay for a prostitute or be a pimp, but it is not illegal to sell sex.

Edit: I believe the crime is actually "communications for the purpose of soliciting a prostitute". So it's not the sex that's illegal, it's any negotiation or communication leading up to it.

I thought prostitution wasn't illegal, but solicitation for the purposes was. So, talking about buying or selling sex for a price is.

Also living off the avails of, is obviously illegal.

I imagine there will shortly be some very loud knocking on your door.

If nothing else it might be a few NSA guys wondering if you actually found the place.

Guys, don't worry, there are always ways around it. Just make sure you always have the video camera with you. "No Officer, I am not trying to pay this young lady for sex, I am simply casting for my upcoming debut pornographic film."
