Starting early next year, we'll apparantly have the opportunity to buy a special "Support our Troops" license plate. Cost is $150, with all proceeds going to support Alberta military troops and their families. Definitely different and more exciting than the boring red & white we've had over the past 30 years.

I'm surprised, since the Stelmach government pretty much scuttled the idea of a new license plate a few years back. I wonder if Stampeders and Flames plates will be far behind, pending the success of the military plates.

Does Ontario still have all those options? I remember seeing this a couple of times:

I can't believe that even Manitoba has CFL and NHL plates but we do not. The vet plates are a great idea, but I think many more people would be willing to pay the extra money for a sports plate.

Love the idea, but I'm all about Calgary and would love a YYC centric plate.

Yup Ontario has many different options.

A personalized licence plate message may contain almost any combination of letters and numbers.
You can also choose to include graphics such as the loon, a trillium, or a logo in support of your favourite Ontario professional sports team, community organization or university.

http://www.ontario.ca/driving-and-roads/choose-licence-plate-graphic

and you can submit a graphic of your choice...as long is it is within guidelines.

Who designs this shat and who approves it? That could be the most blah plate ever. Great opportunity to use the current red in the image as well as maybe a poppy. It looks like a pencil sketch with a ribbon slapped on it. Not very impressed.

And the Canada flag but not the Alberta one? I am not against the Canada flag but man, at least have the Alberta flag, not just the "wordmark".

Isn't the poppy reserved for the veteran plates?

The fact that they don't say "Wildrose Country" is enough for me.

Yeah we already have a plate with a poppy for the veterans, I feel like making this one too similar to that one would undermine the veterans plate.

One other thing is that it'll need to be 7 characters as we're fresh out of 6 character combos.

I wonder if they could make it work similar to the Ontario plate shown in this thread. Meaning have it be # XXX ##, or ##XX##

Could always do what BC did and start with the numbers and then letters...

That would have been way better. The 3-4 (or is it 4-3?) pattern on the new ones drives my OCD up the wall. :bag:

Yeah they could have done 3 numbers then 3 letters, or any combination of letters and numbers... either would have delayed the transition to 7 characters. Must be some kind of technical thing prohibiting it.

I wonder if you'll get a new plate number then? Or will it be a reprint with your current license plate number?

^You'll get a new plate.

Meh. I don't regard my car as a platform to give my opinions on things except 'what I enjoy driving' ie: the car.

Just as I wouldn't put a flying spaghetti monster or Darwin fish on it, I also wouldn't get a Flames license plate or a 'Support Our Troops' license plate, no matter how much I agree with or support whatever it is I'm putting on there.

Not to mention that it gives people who disagree with you less reason to screw with it.

I'd rather just donate the $150 directly.

Ehh, me too if it means I have to give up my 6 character code. I don't want 7.

Red and white? I think the colours are orange and white, and it is no coincidence that those are also the colours of the PC Party, and the Oilers.

Ted Morton aside, I think this is a good starting point/template (minus Robert Bateman, as unique as that would be) for the time when the release all new plates, after Stelmach yanked it away.

The Alberta at the top is the same as currently used. "Strong and Free" is pretty good, and of course the English translation of "Fortis et Liber" on the provincial Coat of Arms.

I'm just psyched at what this holds for the future. I'm a plate collector and I'm tired of the 30 year old one we have currently.

I may stand alone on this, but I'd love to see plates that can identify city. Whether that be with fancy logos/city coat of arms, or just doing things with the city abbreviation (e.g. RD/CGY/EDM/LET/MH) almost european style, like
12RD456 or 34CGY56. Would be pretty cool.

Most of you guys hate all new Flames stuff, especially any new jersey designs. Why would you get a Flames license plate?

This sounds like it should be in one of the Flames jersey threads.
