2013 Draft Review
1ST ROUND: Right off the bat, the Hurricanes were put to the test as John Tavares and the 10th overall selection were almost departed... Heading into the 2013 Draft, Shinkaruk was the last person the ‘Canes were hoping fell to them at the 10th overall selection… actually the 2nd last, as we wanted Domi even less. Not too happy about this selection overall and pretty much took me out of the draft till the late rounds. In the end I went with the theory that if I think it’s a bad pick then it must be the right pick. When that logic becomes your guiding force one has to wonder

2ND ROUND: Took me a while to get back into the groove after the Shinkaruk selection but as the second round started to near I started to get excited about a couple players that were begging to drop. Unfortunately I couldn’t get on the chat nor couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t able to post on the Draft Discussion Thread (locked) I just couldn’t do anything about making a move… and went back to my original plan for the second round. Through the last couple seasons I spent a lot of effort rebuilding my young core, I was now looking for players to add to them,,, I was focusing on big players that I thought could skate and play the game, not necessarily physical, I just wanted a 6 plus frame that had either good hustle or some sort of wheels.

3RD ROUND: The third round found myself pretty much mirroring the second, big with some sort of wheels. Unlike the second though, the holes in these players game were more nitpicked in what I was able to read from. In the last few drafts I’ve had some success drafting in this manner, targeting one goal with multiply picks in hope to fill a certain need. In the early years my picks were either big and slow or small and quick. So even though the picks were completely different they were both fighting the same handcuffs… size + skating

4TH ROUND: By the time the fourth round came around, I was once again looking to plug some organizational needs. Drafting defencemen has always been a problem in the later rounds for me, but I feel I’ve had more success drafting defensive rearguards over the offensive ones. I had two picks for the 4th round but decided to move one to the Wild for a similar pick next year and selected 6’5” Ben Harpur who I hope can be a player the can develop in the ECHL the AHL and as time passes become an assit that gradually attracts interest rather then someone you buyout in a couple years. I’m not a NHL scout and don’t catch many Jr games, drafting in the late rounds is all luck and no skill for me

FINAL THOUGHTS: I had a lot of fun this year even though the ‘Canes didn’t have a multiple picks in the opening round that makes things a lot more fulfilling. Finally getting onto chat in the later rounds was a huge bonus as well. I’ll be curious how I do in the NHL draft, my expectations isn’t that high but hey, what are you going to do
