Garages....what can I build?

Just wondering if anyone knows what the rules are in terms of garages sizes in Calgary.

I'd like to buy a house with a detached garage or atleast space for one, but perhaps increase it...maybe even to two stories. Are there any set rules of what you can and cant do?

Well, according to that link rico posted, apparently that's illegal!

I think ideally I just want space for 4 cars...although the easiest solution would probably be to install a lift such as this.

Yeah I sold a car to a guy that had one of those lifts in his garage. It was pretty cool. They're not even that expensive.

My ideal garage would integrate the cars with my office, so I could look at my cars as I work.

I'm going to bump this thread as I don't feel its necessary to start a new one. I have googled my question, but figure CP would be a better place to ask. A house I am interested in buying has the room to build a detached garage in the back alley...

Forgetting the legalities, permits, etc, what is the approximate cost to build a basic two car detached garage? Thank you.

A 2 Storey garage is allowed if you go down instead of up. edit: Doh, old thread bumped, didn't notice.

8k - 20k I have never gone through the process myself however have enough experience to throw those numbers at you.
If the house is being built, have the concrete pad poured. You can then have a basic double garage slapped up for very cheap, especially if you know how to do some of the work. 20k would involve fully finished and some "goodies". Fully finished meaning insulated & drywalled.

We paid about $16k for our garage (including the pad, electrical trench, opener, etc.) back in 2006 or so. It was a 22x24 and Shaw Construction did the work. My sister got a quote a year or two later and it was up around $20k. Not sure what it would be now. This didn't include insulation, drywall, or anything fancy.

Edit: And to add, the price included the permit and everything. It was a case of "put the garage there" and they did all of the rest.

When I was looking into it a few years ago a basic double will run you around $20-25k.

$6k for the pad, $6k for the package and then double it for labour if you're going to hire someone.

Yup, double garage you're looking at $20,000 - $25,000 if someone does it for you. As Realtor1 said, get your builder to put down your concrete pad. If it's done wrong you'll get puddling, cracks, uneven surfaces.
