View Full Version : tracking read/unread posts

Not really a big deal, but kind of annoying. In order to see new posts, or track posts I've already read I have to consistently click refresh button. Otherwise, every post whether I've read it or not, looks unread. I know this is probably something to do with cookies, but not sure what to do. Anyone help?

For IE v6.x

Click Tools

Internet Options

In the 'General' Tab, under the heading 'Temporary Internet Files', Click 'Settings' button

'Check for newer versions of stored pages' check the box 'Every visit to the page'

Thanks for help, but I had that option selected already, so thats not the problem. Doesnt do it with other message boards so could there be a conflict somewhere between CP's board and my settings??

I think its CP. I asked photon about it a while ago.

You did? :D

Hm, that's weird. When you say the post appears unread, do you mean the thread icon appears like this http://forum.calgarypuck.com/style_images/1/f_norm.gif rather than this http://forum.calgarypuck.com/style_images/1/f_norm_no.gif on all the threads?

At least I thought I did.

That is more the issue with me. Unless I press refresh it says there are still unread posts in a forum when I have read them all. Just pressing the back button doesnt 'set off' the cookie that tracks if Ive read a thread.

When I read a post, then go back to the forum, there is still a little red http://forum.calgarypuck.com/style_images/1/newpost.gif beside the post I just read. This will happen continuously until I either refresh, or visit another web site. Before, the little http://forum.calgarypuck.com/style_images/1/newpost.gif would disappear after reading a thread or post, letting you know there are no new posts in that thread since you last read it.

How are you getting back to the previous page, just with the back button in the browser? If so, that's because the browser is loading the cached version of the page rather than the new version.

There are ways to suggest to the browser to not do that (to not cache a page so it will always get a new version), but not all browsers obey that and that would increase the bandwidth requirements of the site by orders of magnitude.

To have the topic page refresh with every click you would have to use the links at the top and bottom of each thread that takes you back to the forum topic list rather than using the broswer's back button.

Same thing with the large round buttons, though I think there is a bug with those because sometimes they'll be wrong for me.

I've noticed taht since I switched to Firefox, the little red buttons that take you to the first unread post aren't working properly. Sometimes I'll switch forums without addressing all the red buttons, but when I come back, no more red buttons.
Another 'not a big deal, but I'd sure like it if it worked properly'.
Is there something in my setting I should change? I tried subscribing to the forum. Take a guess how that worked out.

I have a new and exciting issue in this area! When I go to page 2 to see if there are any threads I haven't read there, then I go back to page one, it thinks I've read everything on page one, and marks them as such. It wouldn't bother me if I read from the top down, but I like to read the oldest ones I haven't read first...

Not sure what can be done about that one. We're switching forum software soon so there's not much point on looking into it either ;)

There'll be a whole new set of weird things. :D
